California Governor Newsom is looking to relax virus restrictions for businesses and and hints about opening the states schools by July….
The openings would be phased in….
Not an ‘all clear’….
California schools could welcome back students this summer and retail and manufacturing businesses could reopen in the coming weeks, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday as he offered his most concrete glimpse yet of what a gradual reopening may look like.
With health care capacity and hospitalizations stabilizing, Newsom said the state is “weeks, not months” away from making “meaningful modifications” to a statewide order that has relegated Californians to their homes for nearly six weeks. On Tuesday, Newsom said schools could start the next academic year early, possibly in late July or early August, though he did not specify how much instruction could occur on campuses.
“We are considering the prospect of an even earlier school year,” Newsom said, adding that “we need to start preparing for the physical changes in the schools.”
State Public Health Officer Sonia Angell explained that an earlier school year will not only help students make up learning gaps due to current campus closures, but also help parents return to full-time work.
One of Newsom’s preconditions for curtailing coronavirus-related restrictions is ensuring that schools and businesses can safeguard the health of their staff and maintain safe distances between students and customers. He had previously said that might look like schools staggering class times and restaurants offering fewer tables.

There “opening ups” are more than anything else simply a way for Governors to get the monkey off their backs.
The problem, and we are seeing this in SC even with the limited opening up we have, is that few people are returning to stores. As an example , several stores, which reopened in downtown Charleston, said they were serving less than ten customers a day and that it was costing them more to stay open than be closed.
Restaurants have not been permitted to reopen yet ,but likely will be within the next two weeks, and speculation is much the same.Who is going to show up?
Polls consistently show that overwhelming majorities prefer continuing closings ,even with the economic fallout, the antics of Fox News viewers “spontaneous “ demonstrations notwithstanding.
There’s a big gamble here.If the rate of new cases falls or even remains stable, then I would expect customers to gradually ,but steadily ,begin returning. If, however new cases spike?
Then the reopenings will become superfluous and the Governors may find themselves in a much worse place than they were before .

Your states experience will be happening across the country Jack ….I agree…
I have said here that the Governor’s HAVE been put in a BAD place by a President who shirks repsonibilty, but ALWAYS claims the glory…
The BIGGEST issue here was ALWAYS the Economy ….
NOT the virus…
And Donald Trump was and IS USLESS…
I’m worried this is gonna languish until Joe Biden gets sworn in on January 20th and then the Republicans will blame him for THEIR guys fuck up and Democrats get a 2010 repeat in 2022….

I think by the end of May things will get very interesting.
Harking back to a post I did yesterday,After what would then be almost three months in lockdown or some stay at home order, will the average person, of whatever political persuasion just essentially throw up their hands and say” F…It !Im going to start living “normally” again “and implicitly take the attitude that despite the continuing infections and deaths they will start “opening up” themselves?
I’m thinking that something along those lines will probably happen.
Remember that some “experts” early on were saying that most of the population will be infected by the virus ,despite our best efforts. You are already hearing variations of that kind of talk presently.

And Jared Kushner said today that by June things will be back to normal and “hopes” that by July the country will really be “rocking “ again.

Kushner predicts much of the country will be ‘back to normal’ in June
White House senior adviser Jared Kushner on Wednesday expressed optimism that much of the country could be “back to normal” by June as several states prepare to lift restrictions meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
“I think what you’ll see in May as the states are reopening now is May will be a transition month, you’ll see a lot of states starting to phase in the different reopening based on the safety guidelines that President Trump outlined on April 19,” Kushner said on “Fox & Friends.”
“I think you’ll see by June that a lot of the country should be back to normal, and the hope is that by July the country’s really rocking again,” the president’s son-in-law continued….
