President Donald Trump said he will “slash red tape like nobody has even done it before” in a bid to get unapproved coronavirus treatments to patients faster and identify effective drugs.
The president said Thursday he directed the Food and Drug Administration to “eliminate out-of-date rules and bureaucracy so this can go forward fast” — but he did not offer any details. Instead, Trump and top health officials highlighted steps the government has taken in recent weeks to launch clinical trials of potential coronavirus treatments.
Trump’s remarks came one day after he teased that an “exciting FDA announcement” was on the way — news that reportedly caught some in the health agency by surprise as they scrambled to finalize details, said three HHS officials.
The president suggested certain programs that the administration could use to get experimental drugs to people quickly outside of clinical trials. One such route, known as “Right to Try,” was established by a 2018 law that Trump and Vice President Mike Pence supported to help people who are seriously ill and have no other treatment options.
“What we’re talking about today is beyond Right to Try,” Trump said, adding that the law “has been a tremendous success.”
That program allows patients to appeal directly to drugmakers to use medicines that are still being developed and tested. Bioethicists and drug policy experts argue there are other ways to help people access experimental medicine — like the FDA’s compassionate use route, also name checked by the president — and that Right to Try fuels false hope, while making it difficult to collect data on how well the drugs work.
The drugmaker Gilead has provided its experimental antiviral drug remdesivir to patients with coronavirus under compassionate use rules first established in 1987. The National Institutes of Health has also started a clinical trial of the drug in coronavirus patients.
Trump name-checked remdesivir at Thursday’s briefing, along with two drugs that have been used for decades to treat malaria. He suggested that the malaria drugs, hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, could be effective against coronavirus — but the data is still sparse….

Those remarks were at odds with those of his FDA commissioner, Stephen Hahn, who shortly later repeatedly emphasized the importance of safety and said he does not want to “provide false hope.”
“We may have the right drug, but it might not be in the appropriate dosage form right now, and it might do more harm than good,” Hahn said.
At the start of his remarks, the president touted the work of the FDA and claimed his administration “slash red tape” in order to allow vaccines and therapies to treat the virus to be produced “as fast as it can possibly be done.”
Hahn noted during his own remarks that a vaccine for the coronavirus is currently in the first phase of a clinical trial and wouldn’t be ready for 12 months.
The dueling messages from the administration came during a long White House press briefing at which Trump at times spoke of the need for unity in responding to the crisis….

Trump has totally politicized these briefings.
And the ritual of these professionals having to thank him for his”leadership “ is nauseating.
I watched a couple..Now ,I just read the reports of the briefing, but only read comments by the professionals ,skipping his remarks.

It appears that after warning, on the basis of information gleaned from classified briefings, some of his major contributors that the virus was going to hit our markets hard that Republican Senator Burr of North Carolina sold thousands of dollars of his stock portfolio.
SOB needs to resign then be prosecuted.

Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Richard Burr (R-N.C.) each sold hundreds of thousands of dollars in stocks within days of the Senate holding a classified briefing on Jan. 24 with administration officials on the threat of the coronavirus outbreak.
The sales raise questions about whether the senators violated the STOCK Act, a law that bans members of Congress from making financial trades based on nonpublic information.

He has cemented the fact that President’s ARE exempt from regulations that federal employee’s MUST reveal their financials if they have sensitive national security jobs…

At today’s briefing by the coronavirus task force, Peter Alexander of NBC News asked President Trump:
NBC NEWS: What do you say to Americans that are scared?
TRUMP: I say you’re a terrible reporter.
Horrible. As I said yesterday Trump is turning these daily pressers into his rallies. He can’t live without them. Can’t wait for him to lose and go to prison.
That question was about the biggest softball in the history of American politics. Just about any President could have had a “moment” right then and there that would have been part of their legacy. For anybody who has ever strived to be and succeeded in becoming President of the United States and cannot find it somewhat within themselves to rise to that moment on the spot and reassure the nation is astonishing.
I can’t imagine any other President in my lifetime failing to answer this question with some sort of comfort to the American people.
Bloomberg needs to put this in an ad splicing Trump’s pettiness with previous Presidents of both parties (FDR, JFK, Reagan, GW Bush and Obama) all seeking to reassure Americans in times of challenge
