Schools in New York City will close this week in the latest measures by government officials to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Governor Cuomo announced the decision Sunday evening amidst a growing community outcry to keep students home during the current pandemic.
“NYC must have a plan in place in the next 24 hours for childcare for essential workers and a plan to make sure kids will continue to get the meals they need. NYC schools will close early this week,” Cuomo said in a tweet.
The news comes as teachers and parents called for the suspension of classes. The childcare for essential workers and meals for kids in need were the two biggest hurdles to the closure.
Schools in New York City are now join the growing list of schools closing their doors in regions with high volumes of COVID-19. Cuomo said schools in Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau will also be closed for the immediate future. The closure starts Monday.
