This is no surprise to this dog…..
Buttigieg was a one slight hit wonder…
A small town mayor running for President with problems connecting to black voters and being gay….
Buttigieg IS a veteran and cones across as a smart moderate politician …
His debate performances where good…
But moving away from hugely white small states have give the man no place to go..
He came off the campaign a few days ago for a reported rest….Maybe during that time he came to understand his situation of have no chance to capture the prize…Will his supporters switch to Biden (Establishments Democrats hopes) , Sanders or sit the rest of the primaries out?
I am guessing Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren will follow Buttigieg within a week …
Pete Buttigieg dropped out of the 2020 presidential race Sunday night after a roller-coaster campaign that saw him rise from total obscurity to Iowa victor — only to stall out Democratic primary race turned to more diverse states.
The 38-year-old former South Bend, Ind., mayor’s exit comes two days before Super Tuesday, opening up a wider path for former Vice President Joe Biden to become the moderate alternative to Bernie Sanders….
…
Buttigieg was the first out gay candidate to play a major role in a presidential campaign, including notching a narrow win in the Iowa caucuses (where the results are still being disputed by Sanders’ campaign). Buttigieg then finished a close second behind Sanders in New Hampshire.
But he was never able to expand his appeal to include significant numbers of voters of color, and Buttigieg finished a disappointing fourth place finish in the South Carolina primary on Saturday night despite investing significant time and money in the state. Buttigieg won 3 percent of black voters there, according to exit polls, in a state where the Democratic electorate is majority-black. The week prior, Buttigieg finished a distant third place in the Nevada caucuses, where Latino voters turned out in strong numbers.
Buttigieg’s pre-Super Tuesday withdrawal from the race comes amid rising concern among moderate Democrats…

Buttigieg dropping out is harmful to Sanders in 2 ways. Per the economist, relatively few Buttigieg voters were also considering Bernie. But, his voters will now help Biden, Warren and Bloomberg to hit 15% in more states and districts.

Most analysts assume #Buttigieg voters will mainly gravitate to Biden. Certainly not many to Sanders but there are still other alternatives in the race. People don’t easily move en masse from the candidate they loved to anyone else. Takes time.

Politics aside, I think many Americans take for granted how hard it was to grow up gay. In my formative years, I watched campaigns fueled by homophobia. An openly gay man becoming a top-tier candidate without trying to hide his husband or his sexuality is a big deal.
jamesb says
Remember ALL these current polls ARE before Biden’s SC win and Buttigieg actually dropping out…
They are probably useless…
jamesb says
I CANNOT understand ANYONE switching from Buttigieg to Sanders….
Buttigieg was dissing ole’ Bernie since Iowa….
WTF would you go to Sanders instead of Biden or ANY of the others????
My Name Is Jack says
I understand it.
A lot of people regarded Buttigieg as an anti establishment candidate even though his views ,for reasons that aren’t totally clear to me, were said to be “ moderate.”
I will continue to remind that the assumption that candidates dropping out necessarily “helps” Biden is mistaken in my view.
Zreebs says
In this case, I think Buttigieg dropping out does help Biden. At a minimum, this will help Biden get to 15% of the vote in California – which would have been a very big deal if he otherwise failed to do it.
But to assume that Biden will get the vast majority of the Buttigieg vote would be foolish.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
The poll I saw (or rather, whose second-hand report I saw) had Buttigieg respondents giving their second choices to Sanders 19% and Biden 14% (with, presumably the other 2/3 picking someone else or no one).
That doesn’t mean that Sanders has any kind of lock, but it’s foolish to make any assumptions or assertions right now about how those who favored Buttigieg will now spread their votes.
And some voters may have liked Buttigieg for his views on foreign policy and national security views after disillusion as a genuine veteran of the post-9/11 Global War on Terror.
So far as I can gauge, Bernie Sanders’ external policies seem to match most closely what Pete Buttigieg was saying about overseas involvement.
jamesb says
Pete was PUBLICLY NOT a Bernie fan recently….
People will of course make their own choices….
I just don’t see them migrating to the bombastic Sanders…
So far though?
I’m doing good in my guesses and hopes….
We’ll see about tomorrow…

New: A Buttigieg endorsement for Biden is likely, two people close to Buttigieg say, but whether he makes the decision before Super Tuesday is unclear.

If he is going to do it he should be doing it right now.
I mean tomorrow could potentially tell the tale.
What’s the point in waiting?

Tammy Duckworth endorsed Biden today.
Getting two Iraq-Afghanistan war veteran rising stars in the party in the same day would be a nice get for Joe
CG says
If he endorses Biden too early and Biden lays an egg tomorrow, then it was for naught.
There is still at least the possibility that the party will have no choice but to swallow Bloomberg if they want to stop Sanders. That will be more clear after the Super Tuesday results, but even after that it is going to be a bit of gamble.

CNN: Pete Buttigieg will endorse Joe Biden at a rally in Dallas tonight. @abbydphillip
CG says
Biden will get good visuals and probably raise some money from appearing tonight with Pete and Amy.
You know who else will also raise a ton of money tonight because of this rally?
Bernie Sanders.
CG says
Also, at the same time Buttigieg and Klobuchar will be rallying with Biden in Texas, Bernie Sanders will be having a big rally in Minnesota with Ilhan Omar.
Time for choosing indeed.
Scott P says
Saw this quote from Ana Navarro–a Republican strategist who unlike CG does sound genuinely optimistic
“With all these @JoeBiden endorsements coming in, I am beginning to feel less dread. I am more hopeful that this November, America will NOT have to choose between:
A. A guy who went to Russia on his honey-moon 32 years go.
B. A guy who is on a honey-moon with Russian leader now.”

Navarro calls out Trump on the regular
CG says
I do not know how many times I have to say that I am for anything that does not produce Sanders vs. Trump. I have said several times today that I am preparing myself to vote for Biden in a primary (not that I will enjoy doing so)
I do not think Sanders can beat Trump. Biden might be able to. Or more accurately, Trump could lose. Biden is never going to be a strong candidate. He’s just not Trump, just like right now, he’s not Sanders.
But for goodness sake, everyone should be a bit cautious and wait to see what happens.
Far from given that Biden is going to be nominated and if he is, it is far from given he is a slam dunk against Trump.
Now, what legitimate reason exists today for anyone to be for Elizabeth Warren?

Zreebs says
Did I hear Biden correctly when thanking Buttigieg for his endorsement said Buttigieg had a “backbone like a ramrod”?
c’mon Joe!
jamesb says
Z?
Biden DID say that Buttigieg would have a job in his admin…
Zreebs says
Yeah I heard that too.
During fundraising attempts, Buttigieg was believed to have been offering ambassadorships in exchange for money, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he asked for and got a job in exchange for his endorsement.
It could be all innocent, but it is not a good look for the endorsee to be immediately promising a job to the endorser.
Scott P says
Zreebs your comment sounds very similar to a Trump tweet from yesterday where he said Biden promised all of his endorsers positions and again claimed the primary process is being “rigged” agsinst Bernie Sanders.
Nonsense says I.
Zreebs says
I have never said nor do I think the process is rigged this year against Sanders – so I don’t see much similarity between my comment and Trump’s.
In the age of Trump where the corruption is so extreme, it is so easy to ignore things like this. I choose not to do so.
