9 months out from the next General Election finds Donald Trump swinging to the Right on several issue including abortion…..
He’s never been a fan of California whose lawmakers have defied him on several policies and issues…
The Trump administration on Friday threatened to cut off some federal funds to California unless it drops a state requirement that private health insurers cover abortion.
The administration says the policy violates a federal ban on discriminating against health care entities that refuse to cover abortion services or refer patients for the procedure when taxpayer dollars are involved. HHS is giving the state 30 days to comply or face the loss of unspecified funds.
“If states receive federal funds from HHS and other agencies, they cannot discriminate against health plans that decline to pay for abortion. Period. Full stop,” Roger Severino, who leads HHS’ Office for Civil Rights, told reporters on a call Friday morning. “We want California to come to the table so people won’t be forced to choose between having insurance coverage for their families and following their conscience.”
Five other states — Illinois, Maine, New York, Oregon and Washington — have similar laws on the books. But HHS is, for now, only singling out California.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom indicated the state won’t change the policy…..

Trump wants to screw with California because it’s aState he knows he has no hope of winning.

He also wants to run against us, the home of Pelosi and Schiff. He has all those brown people to pick on, and is suddenly concerned about the homeless.
His supporters love to pick on a place they have never been but seem to fear. I love it when I hear someone say “I could never live there.” I want to respond, because you couldn’t compete there.”
Fifth largest economy in the world and we contribute more to the National Budget than we get in return. But hey, the guy who has most likely paid for more abortions than get performed daily at a clinic in LA wants to punish women and California for making a choice about their reproductive rights.

Yup on California

So fetuses at all costs. OK. Let’s see how that message plays with independents and suburban women in other states. Specifically the suburbs of Detroit, Philly, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Atlanta, he’ll even Dallas and Houston burbs.

I wouldn’t be quite so sure of that, Scott.
My own suspicion is that the kind of swing suburban female voter (e.g. an office or soccer mom) who might be pro-choice or ambivalent as an individual would also be the most likely to be receptive to arguments about conscience clauses or free choice of plans and providers: e.g, “you might want a plan that includes abortion as an option, but why deny a conservative Christian (or Jewish or Muslim) woman the right to choose a plan that doesn’t cover abortion ?”
Now, I know that some conservatives want to allow employers (or states) the option of offering only non-abortion plans, but whether the state laws forbid that or not, that’s not how the argument will be phrased.
You could also instance the suburbs of Cleveland, Cincinnati and Des Moines.
