The Dow Jones industrial average plunged more than 500 points Friday as investors fear the spreading coronavirus that has brought China to a standstill will stall global growth.
China’s markets are closed for the extended holiday, but Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.7 percent. Europe’s benchmark Stoxx 600 index was down 0.4 percent in midday trading, and Britain’s FTSE 100 was off 0.7 percent on the long-awaited official day of Brexit.
The tumult ushered U.S. markets’ worst week of trading in 2020, a disappointing end to what otherwise had been a strong January that brought the Dow Jones industrial average within striking distance of 30,000. The Dow sank 450 points Friday after Thursday’s last-minute recovery gave all three major indexes their biggest intraday rebound since October, according to Dow Jones market data. The Standard & Poor’s 500 was down 1.2 percent at midday. The tech-laden Nasdaq was off by 1 percent.
White House considering tougher China travel restrictions
WASHINGTON — The White House could announce even tighter travel restrictions to and from China as soon as Friday in response to the growing threat posed by the coronavirus, three senior administration officials said.
Tighter restrictions, or even an outright ban on all China travel, could formalize and broaden individual announcements that multiple airlines have already made. A number of lawmakers have been pressing the White House to make an announcement immediately.
The announcement by President Trump could come as soon as Friday afternoon, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to reveal internal deliberations. The officials stressed that no final decisions had been made and that restricting travel is one among options under consideration for how to respond.
