BIG STORY is Trump approved a US Military strike that took out the top Iranian military guy, who was in Iraq ….
The story is that the US has tracked the guy for a while , but he was off limits…
Everybody is now waiting for the other shoe to drop from Iran….

The troops are going back to the Middle East
CG says
The others probably won’t comment until I do, so they know how to go about disagreeing with me.
Scott P says
My thoughts on Iran–Trump was right that Iraq was a “stupid war”. A war with Iran would be 100 times stupider.
CG says
Do you not trust the claim that U.S. intelligence had determined an attack on Americans was imminent?
I assume you do not take issue with the assertion that Solemani was a terrorist and a murderer responsible for the deaths of thousands, including hundreds of Americans.
What should an American President do when faced with something like that? Not every action leads to “war.” Clearly when engaging in such an operation, all possible aspects of what might happen next need to be considered and planned for. Obama certainly droned to death many, many terrorists.
Is this different because the terrorist was officially part of a government? Maybe. But if we have intelligence showing Iran is going to attack Americans per his command and we let it happen…. well, we are at war then and there whether we wanted to be or not.
Scott P says
So you support Trump on this?
Not surprised
CG says
I support America. Trump is still scum. Both can be true. Maybe it’s too complex of a mindset for some, but it’s pretty easy for me, just as it was to support Obama when he took specific action against terrorists, even as I opposed the overall direction of his Presidency.
Scott P says
I support America too. One can love this country and not want to see us dragged into a costly (both in dollars and blood) conflict.
Ttump supporters who just weeks ago said cutting the Kurds loose was a good idea because we don’t want to get bogged down in the Middle East are now saying we have nothing to fear when it comes to retaliation from Iran
Hmm, just like we’ll be “greeted as liberators”.
CG says
Trump’s foreign policy is incoherent and muddled and quite often wrong. But if an attack was imminent, stopping it was the right thing to do. Period.
And there should be no “tears shed” for Solemani. You can use your Elizabeth Warren Tear Mug for other purposes.
And gee, what do you know, you admit to being scared about the unknown and what *might* happen. Welcome to humanity.
Scott P says
Who said there were “tears shed” for Solemani.
Dusting off your greatest hits from 2003 I see–
“Saddam was a bad guy!”
You love this stuff. This is the Republican Party you miss. Always ready to go to war! Well from a keyboard at least
CG says
You have left-wingers on Twitter apologizing to Iran and begging them to not hurt us.
Protecting America should go beyond Democrat/Republican, etc. If your first instinct is, “I hope this is bad for the current President”, you aren’t really patriotic.
Trump should still be removed from office. He should still lose an election. He should resign this very minute, but I would assume that any American President, if given actionable intelligence that an attack on America was imminent, will act in such a way.
What is the alternative?
If we called their bluff and let them do the attack, then we are in an actual “war” right after that. Maybe this means we won’t be. We heard the same concerns after Trump bombed Syrian targets. On that at least, he turned out to be right.
Scott P says
Ooh “left wingers on Twitter”–well that solves it.
Anyone who thinks this might be ill advised is just another America hater to be lumped in with them.
Like I said, you are loving this. It’s 2003 all over again for you!
Maybe the Dixie Chicks will say something about Donald Trump and you can go back to smashing their CDs–or streaming services that carry them.
CG says
I’m not “loving anything” about the state of America and the world in 2020, especially politically, but I do love the country and want it protected, whatever it takes.
Americans were at risk this past week at the Embassy in Baghdad and I am glad that threat was subdued. Now, we are told that a much bigger attack was “imminent” against Americans and I am glad that was stopped, just as I have been glad about every attack, that we have known about or that we did not know about, which had been planned, that was stopped since 9/11/01.
CG says
Of course, we have been at war since 9/11/01. The enemy never announced a ceasefire.
Had Obama done this, it would likely be universally applauded (besides for the Rand Paul and the then Donald Trump).
With Trump as COC, so many Americans rightfully do not trust his intentions or judgment. Some think it might be totally possible that he “made this all up” , although that would have been really hard for him to do, especially with the attack on the embassy that Solemani was behind. But if Trump is truly this effctive of an evil genius and it comes out, you can add it to the Impeachment that so many Democrats are still scared of.
Hopefully, this was the right action and hopefully, our national policy will be clear and coherent in the days ahead and regardless of what any “response” is.
We should still be united as Americans in opposing those who wish to destroy us, even as we engage in our well-established democratic traditions of impeachment and elections.
Scott P says
Once a hawk, always a hawk. Be it Dick Cheney or Donald Trump leading the charge.
CG says
or Obama or Hillary, etc. etc.
At least point out the consistency in my approach. (and of course the hope is that this action will prevent greater conflict, so I don’t know how that fits in with the Hawkism)
Clearly, you are unable to articulate your own thoughts or address the points I made. Sad.
Scott P says
Obama had 8 years and never did anything to put us this close to a major war.
Hillary was never President.
I get it–you like war as much as you hate weed.
Maybe you should actually experience one or the other at some point in your life.
CG says
Now, you are just showing your lack of emotional maturity and insecurity in backing up your own beliefs. I imagine your sister and brother in law have inflicted some of the same damage that I once heard Dana Loesch do to you.
Obama definitely presided over the death of many terrorists on his watch, including bin Laden. There was certainly great risk for retaliation against Americans right after that (especially considering the unsightly way they spiked the football for an entire campaign) but taking that action was still the right thing to do.
Sure, there are dangers now. I think less likely though to occur within the U.S. than right after bin Laden was killed. Iran cannot currently launch a nuclear weapon, but trusting them and not doing anything to stop them means that one day they will, Thank goodness now is not that time.
Scott P says
If you are going to keep bringing up my family get it right. It’s my sister in law who is a Trump supporter. And possibly my brother but he never talks about it.
As to Dana Loesch it’s weird that you bring up that radio bit I was on 7 or so years ago, but you like to dredge up stuff from 30 years ago when it comes to Keith so no surprise you’d take that gun toting wacko woman to attack me.
CG says
Ok, brother and sister in law. Thanks for the correction, I wouldn’t have brought them up if you didn’t. I have mentioned that I have a very liberal sister in law (and her extended family incredibly so) and I have always mentioned several times that my father, who was never that attuned politically, seems to have been somewhat brainwashed by Trumpism.
You have mentioned that your mother will do as I will do and vote for neither Trump nor the Democrat. I bet I would probably like her.
Scott P says
My mother just won’t vote.
CG says
That’s her right. I will go to vote for other races, etc, for the best person for the job, be they R, D, or I, and if not given an acceptable option for President, write someone in.
Scott P says
She’s also 85 and in the early stages of dementia.
So take from that what you will.
CG says
G-d bless her.
Scott P says
Thank you. She’s actually doing quite well. After a lifetime of being relatively politically active however she has kind of just tuned that stuff out. If she ever mentions politics it’s about people she used to work with or for (judges, county and state officials, etc)
As you said it’s her right, and a lot of people rearrange their priorities in the autumn of their lives.
My Name Is Jack says
My mother began suffering from dementia at around 87 yoa.
She lingered until she passed at 93 yoa.
It had a very debilitating effect on me dealing with her during that time.
Hopefully you will handle it better than I did.
CG says
No doubt it’s a horrible thing for everyone involved and hopefully so much more can be done in terms of prevention, treatment, etc.
My aunt developed it in her 60s and was gone at 70.
Scott P says
Thank you Jack. She first showed some symptoms about two years ago, but they haven’t gotten worse since then. She still lives alone and takes care of herself, just doesn’t drive and needs reminders to take her meds.
I’m sorry you went through that. My hope is that if she does get full blown dementia or Alzheimers something else–like a heart attack– takes her out before it gets too bad.

I saw that a Trump claimed that an attack on Americans was imminent. Perhaps I missed it, but I haven’t seen that claim reiterated by non-Trump appointees. The closest I saw were claims from non-Trump officials that Solemani had orchestrated attacks in the past – in particular during the US Iraqi invasion. That by itself, of course, is not a good enough reason for action that has a real chance of starting a war with Iran. So now if Iran responds – as they have promised – does this mean war? Most likely Iran will respond in a military way in which their involvement is not clear.

Instagram model raises $700,000 for Australia fires with nude photos before account deleted
‘Naked Philanthropist’ Kaylen Ward inspires other sex workers to offer photos in exchange for donations to bushfire relief
In four days, 20-year old Kaylen Ward estimates she has raised more than $700,000 for the victims of Australia’s bushfire crisis – by sending nude photographs of herself to anyone who donates more than $10 to one of her chosen charities and sends her the receipt.
The California resident has worked as a nude model since August 2019. While vacationing in the Caribbean she says she fell into a “rabbit hole” after reading about the unprecedented fires that are raging along Australia’s eastern and southern coastlines.
“I donated $1,000 myself,” she tells Guardian Australia. “I had a substantial amount of followers, maybe 30,000 at the time, and I thought that a lot of my followers would pitch in and send in some donations for the wildfires.”
At around 10pm on 3 January, Ward tweeted a nude image of herself – with an angel emoji acting as a modesty strip – alongside a list of charities her followers could fund. That evening she raised more than $7,000. “The next morning I woke up and it had gone absolutely viral and I was flooded with messages. It quickly just blew up and went upwards of $100,000 before I knew it.”
Ward’s original tweet has now been retweeted 77,000 times and she has started calling herself the Naked Philanthropist. “Not all heroes wear capes,” has been one of the most common responses to her efforts….

But you are saying this about a story where it says a bipartisan compromise was reached with the Republican legislature.
So why not vote against single party rule in general?
Scott P says
Because Democrats will always be for expansion of health care coverage. In this case Republicans were, probably out of worry of losing their jobs–to Democrats.
CG says
It said it was a compromise, i.e. both sides not getting exactly what they want. You seem to be missing that aspect. How do we know that people of your ideological ilk like the compromise or do they think she gave too much away?
(and there have been many many instances in recent years of GOP Governors expanding health care)
In Kansas specifically the Governor is a Democrat because the last Republican nominee was so divisive and many Republicans voted for her.
She would seem to be the one more at risk of losing an office than the typical legislative Republican there from a heavily Republican district.
CG says
If you want to say “I like when Democrats win because of the things they do”, that’s fine, but it doesn’t fit in the way you responded to an article here.
It would make more sense if you said it about a state with complete one party domination like Illinois where one party can run roughshod over the other (despite numerous instances of corruption scandal, and self-dealing) to implement an agenda.

I don’t know a better way to illustrate why candidates like Warren or Sanders would be much easier for Trump to beat.
This country is not a liberal country – it’s still a center right country, and people will hold their nose to vote for Trump if the alternative is too far left….
(My feelings EXACTLY!)
CG says
Also, a warning for Biden and the others to not to move too far to the left, as we saw by the way he caved under pressure like a cheap suit regarding the Hyde Amendment.

Scott P says
The throwaway votes are going to be a lot lower this time around I think. McMullin is a smart guy. If he’s not going to run himself (and I seriously doubt he will) he will suck it up and endorse a Democrat. He recognizes the threat a second Trump term is.
CG says
Maybe if Bloomberg gets nominated people (like myself) will do that.
With Warren or Sanders, you are going to have people who voted Democrat last time voting for Trump. (not me though. I’m stubborn.)
CG says
not that I voted Democrat last time… but that just goes to emphasize the point for the others…, the reluctant white-collar Hillary voters.
jamesb says
It is normal for politicians to change things up ….
They ALL do it….

CG says
Politicians are looked down upon for that reason.
People would appreciate a politician who would show some guts and stand by their principle. There is even an award called “Profile In Courage” given out by the JFK Library. Needless to say, Biden is not going to win.
My Name Is Jack says
You don’t think Bernie Sanders, whatever one thinks of him, stands by his principles?
CG says
If that is addressed to me, I think Sanders stand by his principles, although he has flip flopped too for political expediency.
It’s just that his principles are not in line with enough Americans to win a general election.
My Name Is Jack says
Sanders has stood by his principles far better than like 99% of the Republican members of Congress,
CG says
And Sanders has the lifelong ire of Hillary Clinton because of it.
Believe me, if Sanders is nominated, Americans are going to learn a lot about his “principles” and things he said decades ago, and more recently to. It will be up to him to show if he still stands by those things or if he repudiates them.
My Name Is Jack says
That’s nothing as to how almost every Republican politician in the country has abandon any pretense of “principle” in bowing down to Trump.
As for the Hyde amendment, while you seem to be very interested in it,I don’t see it as a major issue in the campaign.
CG says
Well, they don’t deserve the award either. Biden is like them.
I think the Hyde Amendment might be the single thing to keep people from being unable to vote for Biden in a general election. As I have mentioned before, it might be like one of three things for me.
My Name Is Jack says
Oh I don’t think you would ever vote for Biden, his views on the Hyde Amendment not withstanding.
You have been a critic of his for years not least as VP for Obama whom you’ve described as one of the worst Presidents in history
CG says
He deserves criticism for many years over his career.
Still, there are legitimately only 3 or 4 things that would prevent me from voting for him over Trump (to the best of my knowledge, Bloomberg passes my litmus tests, so I would be willing to vote for him over Trump), not that I would claim that I would be excited or optimistic over either vote.
Sorta like you voting for the MAGA hat wearing statewide candidates in SC because the Democrats were unacceptable.
jamesb says
He, he, he….
Mike Bloomberg WAS a Republican for years, eh?
He’s ok for ya CG?
jamesb says
And Y NOT Pence?
My Name Is Jack says
No you would never vote for Biden
It will be interesting to see which “MAGA hat wearing” Trumpite you support for President in 2024.
You’ve already said you “could” support Trumps leading flunkie Mike “I left my backbone in Indiana” Pence.
Any others?
CG says
Are you my Manchurian programmer? It’s usually a sign of courtesy to take people for their word. I think I am very open and transparent on here, maybe to a fault.
Whomever I might support in a 2024 primary will have not worn a MAGA hat. I can assure you of that.
In a general election, what will be the stakes and where will both parties have positioned themselves? I hope there is significant change in *both* of them or a different viable option for people who think like me. If not, and I am still able to prioritize voting, I might cast a “throw away” vote again.
My Name Is Jack says
So you wouldn’t support Mike Pence?
My Name Is Jack says
Have you ever seen Molly Spearman in a MAGA hat?
If so when and where?
Do you have pictures?
CG says
I doubt I would support Pence in a primary, even if he were the incumbent President.
Faced with a general election contest with no viable alternative between Pence and a far-left Democrat, I would vote for Pence, without any enthusiasm.
CG says
She your type? She looks good for her age, but the MAGA hat would ruin it for me. I just know she voted for Trump and has never spoken out against him, so using the Keith standard that a vote for Mitt Romney makes someone a Nazi sympathizer, I am simply saying that a vote for Donald Trump makes someone a MAGA sympathizer.
My Name Is Jack says
So you would vote for aMAGA hat wearing Trump supporter (Pence)?
How about Nikki Haley?Theres aTrump MAGA hat wearer you could vote for with a little more enthusiasm.
CG says
I *haven’t* thus far. As I thought you knew, I am hoping for a fundamental change in the Republican Party away from Trumpism. If he loses, I think it is at least probable.
jamesb says
I’m with Jack…
Most Democrats couldn’t tell ya what the Hyde Amendment IS….
Nor would they care….
Just like Trump?
Biden’s support IS STRONG….
CG says
The Democrats who do know what it is and do care about it forced Biden to back down from a position he had for decades in which he said he would never abandon. He got some pressure and literally changed overnight.
A lot of people know what it is and what it means. Catholic and otherwise. They care about things like this. It could make the difference for Biden between victory and defeat in a general election.
jamesb says
After two days of intense criticism, Joseph R. Biden Jr. reversed himself Thursday night on one of the issues most important to Democratic voters, saying he no longer supports a measure that bans federal funding for most abortions.
As recently as Wednesday, Mr. Biden’s campaign had said he supported the measure, known as the Hyde Amendment. His decision to change positions illustrates the intense pressure he faces as the presumed front-runner for the Democratic nomination for president.
[What is the Hyde Amendment? Here’s a look at what it does, and why the politics have shifted.]
His turnaround was abrupt, particularly because Mr. Biden has grappled for decades with his views on abortion rights. While he has said he supports Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that made abortion legal nationwide, he has opposed members of his own party on a number of abortion measures, ascribing his reluctance to his Roman Catholic faith.
In a speech at a gala hosted by the Democratic National Committee in Atlanta on Thursday night, Mr. Biden credited the change, in part, to recent efforts by Republicans to roll back abortion access in states including Georgia and across the country — especially in the South — calling them “extreme laws.”….
NY Times 6/6/19
(Joe Biden NOW SUPPORTS the REPEAL of the Hyde amendment…So?…He is IN tune with the majority of his party…He isn’t the first …nor will he be the last to ‘change his mind’ as other’s have from BOTH parties…)
CG says
He was a Democrat for many more years than he was a Republican. He always was a Republican In Name Only (which my party was fine with because we got to brag about beating Democrats in one of their urban mcccas and I think he was sincere in backing GWB for reelection.) He was a far better option for NYC than those who ran against him as Democrats. The City would be far better off if he were Mayor today over what replaced him.
Ideologically, I am not a Bloomberg fan at all (although I recognize he has always been great on Israel), but I can at least tolerate him based on his positioning and accomplishments over his opponents in this race. There is always the chance he starts apologizing and pandering too, such as what he did on stop and frisk.
jamesb says
It IS being held against him by establishment Democrats…
NYC would N OT be better off and he’d probably lose if he ran again….

He would NOT be a good President and continues to earn only single digit support among Democrats even with ‘800 staffers and over $100 million invested’
CG says
majority of his party, maybe, at least the activist branch. Not majority of his country though. The vast majority of the country, including many people who believe abortion should be legal do not believe it should be paid for by taxpayers.
*if* nominated, he will find it tougher trying to run back to the center.
CG says
Biden’s smartest and luckiest moment from the last debate was when he was supposed to give an answer about slavery reparations and he wisely pivoted and answered a different question instead. For some reason, the moderator chose not to push the original question, so he got away with it.
He may not always be able to get away with avoiding addressing that issue in this campaign.

jamesb says
Ok…
Yea he did…
But he NOW supports repeal….
CG says
Biden seems to be left alone more in the latest debates, because the other candidates seemed to have made the determination that he will implode on his own.
and that is also what many thought about Trump in the 2015 debates and why they left him alone.
jamesb says

Castro had little to no support to start
Warren started falling off after she backed away from her Medicaid for All plan and fears about here electablity.
Buttigieg is in *far* better shape now than he was when debate season began.

True I DO support Biden…
But if u check my observation I believe I have it right….

Bloomberg very publicly left the Republican Party while Mayor.
When he ran for a third time, the party still offered him their ballot slot because who else did they have?
The main problem for you is that you are showing complete inconsistency between that example and that of Bernie Sanders.
jamesb says
Last sentence is as I pointed out technically incorrect….
Spending $90M Money Mike ran on there REPUBLICAN and INDEPENDANT ballot lines…
I don’t care what the guy tried to sell…
He ran AS A REPUBLICAN….
AGAIN?
THAT IS A FACT….
He, he, he….
I do NOT believe Sanders was ever a Democrat?
CG says
Historically, in places like Chicago, people would be nominated on both the Democrat and Republican line.
jamesb says
Split party tickets are common in New York also…
But Bloomberg ran twice as a straight up Republican and the last time as a Republican AND Indie….
And it don’t matter ‘who they have’…He ran as a Republican my friend…
I’ll help ya out a bit…
‘People ain’t just one thing’….
But Bloomberg did dance with the GOPer’s for 12 years….

Polling sidebar updated…
Things remain basically the same….

Apparently, given the amount of time you spend discussing it, you want those of us here to care whom you vote for.
While I find it mildly amusing, I really don’t care who you vote for.
CG says
Then if you don’t really care, just take me at my word instead of declaring you know my intent better than I do. It doesn’t mean you have to agree or disagree.. or care.

Here is what Molly Spearman has said:
“If I had a chance to speak to Mr. Trump personally, I would ask him to really consider now [that] all eyes are on him, including the eyes of our children, and I would ask him to consider to tone his rhetoric down a bit. … But again, I think folks that I know who have met him believe that there’s a better man there. I think he does understand.”
No, the folks that know him personally know what a jerk he truly is. She would have been better off saying she was ok with that instead of this theory that he really is a teddy bear at heart.
