Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she will transmit the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump next week, ending a heated standoff with Senate Republicans over the terms of the impeachment trial.
“I have asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to be prepared to bring to the Floor next week a resolution to appoint managers and transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate,” Pelosi said in a letter to House Democrats.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — having already secured GOP votes for his preferred trial framework — could start the impeachment trial shortly after he receives the articles.
Pelosi and Senate Democrats had sought to pressure Republicans into accepting new witnesses and evidence in a bid to ensure a fair trial, but they were rebuffed by McConnell….

I don’t think we know what might happen in a Senate trial or what political impact it might have regarding witnesses, etc. I just know that the daily MSN tracking poll shows about 54-41 percent in favor of the Senate removing him.
Why shouldn’t any anti-Trump political junkie at least enjoy the “show?”

When I had a case that I was fairly certain wouldn’t fly with aJury,I dropped it and moved on .
That’s common at every level of courts.
Then you were a defense counsel for Moe, Larry, and Curly from time to time? Surely, you have seen things/results in a courtroom that surprised you.

But I’ve never tried a case where over half the jury essentially announces ,before any evidence has been heard ,that they are going to vote to acquit.
Further ,if Mitch has his way ,and he likely will, there will be nothing more than some recitation of what’s already known ,then quick vote.
Apparently, that’s how the OJ jury felt going into the trial. The Prosecutors still had a job to do.
I think it’s up in the air if Bolton testifies, etc. Who knows what might happen. There is of course the public watching. Shouldn’t this be an opportunity for some Democrat House member serving as an impeachment manager to make a name for himself or herself?

Those polls are highly suspect.
Explain to me why these polls are showing that 54% supposedly want him “removed” yet the presidential race is considered a “tossup” by most.
Those same polls also daily track the Presidential race.
They tend to get a result showing the Democrat at 49, Trump at 41, and “other” at 10.
Trump is in serious political trouble. Democrats need to play their political cards right. The impeachment trial is almost a gimme for them though, There’s not much that can hurt them. They just get to watch Trump stew publicly. Picking a strong (if not merely non-toxic candidate) should be their main concern.
And of course people consider the Presidential race a toss-up precisely for the last thing I mentioned
There is no General Eric Democrat that is going to come in to the rescue.
You have a limited group of people to choose from.
Frankly, the bench should be bigger, There could have been at least one “purple state” Governor with a record of success somewhere between age 45-65 that was there. But Democrats spent nearly a decade on the Barack Obama Cult of Personality Tour and the “farm team” withered to a tremendous extent.
(1) Tim Kaine fit the bill for a middle-aged Governor of a purple state, but I couldn’t discern a single thing he added to the Clinton-Kaine campaign.
On the other hand, he was an able Governor and has been a valuable U.S. Senator.
(1) As I’ve said many time before, I wish Amy Klobuchar were doing better, not because our views coincide, but because she is responsive to the issues that progressives raise. Plus she seems as level-headed and capable as any of the other candidates (e.g. Joe Biden); i.e. the direct opposite of Donald Trump’s foreign policy by tantrum.
Kaine was a dud nationally.
Ironically of course, much has been written about Klobuchar’s “temper” behind closed doors and how high her staff turnover has been and some very specific ugly incidents.

That was my only point when CG suggested that what the Democrats need is the governor of a purple state between the ages of 45 and 65.
I think that Kaine was a fine choice. He made Virginia clearly in the D column. What more could you want?

Kaine was Hillary’s most reasonable choice when she made it. It looked like she would win easily. Virginia was going to go Democrat one way or another.
However, a VP nominee just has a few moments in the spotlight. Nobody remembers a thing Kaine said at the convention, even when there were many other headlines made by others at the convention.
In the VP debate, Kaine lost to Pence. That was his one chance. He lost on style and on substanec, when all he really had to do was effectively prosecute Trump, he failed. Pence hemmed and hawed and still won that debate in the eyes of those who watched it.
I am sure Kaine campaigned hard, likely harder than Hillary herself, but made virtually no news, (one way or another)
In retrospect, considering Hillary’s problems in Ohio and with Sanders’ voters, she would have been better off picking Sherrod Brown.

Indeed ,since it looks like it will all be over within the next two weeks or so, that leaves almost ten months between his acquittal and the election.
This whole thing will be old hat by then and ,with Trump in particular ,scores of other matters will have much more of an effect,
Democrats should be able to make a moral stand of right vs. wrong to the nation regardless of the outcome of the trial showing the seriousness of what Trump did wrong, yet they seem uncomfortable speaking in moral certitudes (perhaps due to past experiences, perhaps because they don’t really want the Hunter Biden angle to be thought about too much, etc. etc). So here we are, where Americans have grown accustomed to Presidential sleaze.

The bottom line is that the Democrat House members are, if nothing else, going to get to give very long speeches and Democrat Senators will get to help by throwing them fastballs down the middle.
Then, your side can go to the cameras and complain about how unfair and rigged it all is and a bunch of people will probably agree with it and will be motivated to get their chance to vote out Trump.

I barely remember anything “live” from the Clinton impeachment trail in the Senate. I definitely did not skip class to watch it anymore than I am going to skip work to watch Trump.
I just remember seeing the ending portion of the roll call vote on Clinton from my university’s Student Center. People were sitting around and watching pretty quietly. Nobody reacted one way or another when it was over.
