Editors ALWAYS are looking for new angles….
Here we have a leap forward in a Politico Magazine cover story…
Just because you aren’t running for president right now doesn’t mean you’re not running for president at all. Anyone watching closely in 2019, and focusing their attention past the 2020 election, could see that the jockeying for 2024 has already begun.
Who had the best 2024 campaign this past year? There’s a lot we don’t know yet, like whether the next presidential campaign will be a contest to succeed a new Democratic administration, or to succeed eight years of Donald Trump. Will the 2020 Democratic primary establish a new consensus inside the party, or leave it trapped in its old arguments? Will the post-Trump Republican Party be desperate for a housecleaning, or will it crave another Trumpist candidate?
We do know that prospective candidates are already thinking that far ahead, trying to carve out distinct profiles for themselves. They haven’t decided whenthey’re going to run, but they’re wondering whether 2024 will be the right year.
Too early, you say? Never. While not obvious at the time, in retrospect, Trump’s 2011 promotion of the baseless conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was not born in America laid the groundwork for his 2016 run. In more traditional fashion, Obama’s 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address was the effective beginning of his successful 2008 campaign.
So which prospective candidates are winning the race for 2024 in 2019?…

CG says
As I said earlier this week (I think), if Trump beats a Sanders or a Warren, then Mayor Pete has a huge narrative in his favor. If Trump beats Biden (or someone not considered far left), then they party is going to go full 1964 in reverse and look for an AOC.
What about the richest man in politics? Billionaire JB Pritzker. Is he too fat? Can he avoid indictment as an Illinois Governor?
On the GOP side, I am pretty sure Rick Scott, Tom Cotton, and Doug Ducey are all making plans. Oh, and Ted Cruz too.
The fate of Trump in the 2020 elections (or the fate of him in a second term) will of course tell the tale as to what kind of person will hold sway.
I do not think Trump Sr. would ever allow his son to run. He knows that it would reflect badly upon him. Ivanka is the one that would run if anyone. But in which party?
Scott P says
So I see now we have moved from Donald Trump is actually a Democrat to Ivanka Trump is one.
Josh Hawley has been trying to get the orangest nose prize by kissing up to Trump as much as possible. To call him an empty suit is unfair to empty suits!
Keith says
Gee, Corey said someone is too fat! How could he be so mean?
Have you looked at your President Corey?
Zreebs says
Ivanka Trump can’t win the nomination as a Democrat even if her campaign was flawless. But if she runs as Republican and Donald supports her, then she at least has a shot. Republicans don’t care what she believes as long as she opposes the Democrats.
Scott P says
Republicans Eye Trump Dynasty for 2024
True “never Trumpets” in the GOP need to realize the bestcwau to end this madness is to deliver a massive blow to the Trumpublican ticket in 2020
The ONLY way to do that is to make sure the Democraric nominee has as many votes as possible.
Your write in vote or insignificant 3rd party vote is your “right”, of course. But it accomplishes nothing.

Yes, I have made the point in discussions here with CG that even when Trump himself exits the scene doesn’t necessarily mean that ‘ Trumpism” will fade away.
This poll ,while admittedly early, confirms that a significant number of Republicans would consider extending the dynasty by supporting one of his children.
Now there could be a comparison to polls that showed (and still do) significant Democratic support for Michelle Obama as the party nominee.Michelle , however, has publicly denied any interest in such ,while Jr has indicated interest.I am unaware of any comments by Ivanka.
I continue to believe that only by defeating Trump is there a chance for the Republican Party to eliminate Trump from the equation. If he is re-elected? I think the chances increase greatly that Junior or Ivanka might try to keep “Trumpism”alive into the future.

Agreed Jack….
Zreebs says
If Trump wins a second term,I suspect he will at least try to repeal the 22nd Amendment
Keith says
If Trump wins and his ball less party members keep the Senate, it’s all over. The Steven Millers of the Party will run the country.

Scary shit to think of….
Scott P says
Agreed. It’s why I can’t take seriously any politically in tune person who claims they see the danger Trumpism poses sitting out the Presidential election by voting 3rd party or write in.
Thankfully I think that number will be significantly less this year than the 6% who did so in 2016.
Keith says
Actually I know a few on the left, but they regularly throw their vote away.
They get plenty of shit from me, and deserve it. As opposed to mindlessly supporting any foreign intervention and then wrapping themselves in the flag to justify the act, third party voters will be the real traitors to democracy.
A never Trumper, who claims to understand the dangers of the man and then throws his or her vote away, is beneath contempt.
jamesb says
The midterm increased vote that gave Pelosi her old job back should point to the forecasting of a LARGE vote propelled by Trump….
My Name Is Jack says
I certainly could see that happening although he would be unsuccessful in doing do.
Ironically,it was Republicans who really pushed for that amendment ,post FDR.
It very soon bit them of course.
Eisenhower would likely have easily won aThird term in 1960 Arguably, Reagan could have too in 1988(although he might have had to step down due to the dementia he began to suffer from in the early nineties.)
The 22nd has seemingly become institutionalized .It is highly unlikely it would be repealed.
Keith says
Like George Wallace getting his wife elected Governor, I could see Trump putting his kid up for office.
I think, like Reagan, there is evidence that Trump is having cognitive issues. Reagan certainly was before he left office. He would not last that long, and either would the country.
Zreebs says
I agree that Trump appears to be showing cognitive decline. His communication skills were never strong, but they appear to have deteriorated.
jamesb says
I agree with you Keith….
I remember thinking that his staff was running the show for Reagan….
Trump’s recent visit to the hospital remains a mystery….
Zreebs says
Trump’s visit to the hospital was more likely related to a physical problem than a mental one. Trump obviously is in poor physical condition too.
Keith says
One other thing and then I have to go, planting olive trees today.
It appears both Trump and his wormy son Eric told friends of the impending attack before any Member of Congress, except Ms. Lindsay, was notified.
Proof that our reckless President is more the locker room bully, than a professional. And not one Republican will say a word.
Have a good day everyone.

Trump’s hinted about an ‘action’ against Iran to others for a week…
This IS. closing the door after the horse got out due to Trump’s ineptness in dealing with the Middle East and foreign affairs in general….
