Current Long Island Don Clavin Officially wins the Hempstead Town Supervisor job….Democratic Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen has conceded…..
Republican’s in the Long Island town have had a political comeback despite dwindling Republican voter numbers in the town….
Democratic Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen conceded Thursday the election to Republican challenger Don Clavin, who recaptured the town’s top job in the GOP stronghold.
Gillen, a first-term supervisor who two years ago became the first Democrat to win the town’s top job in more than a century, trailed Clavin, the town tax receiver, by more than 1,500 votes on election night. That lead grew by another 100 votes following a count of paper ballots.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the first Democratic supervisor in 112 years,” Gillen said. “To those who supported my good government initiatives and fight against corruption, I am disappointed to say we just fell short.”
Clavin had declared victory on election night, but Gillen waited two weeks for the Nassau County Board of Elections to count the absentee and affidavit ballots before conceding.
“I want to thank the voters of Hempstead town for giving me the opportunity to serve as the next supervisor,” Clavin said. “I am dedicated to an inclusive and forward-thinking administration that will focus on providing the best government services at the lowest possible cost.”
Gillen was one of three incumbent town supervisors on Long Island who were unseated on Election Day.
Republican challenger Yvette Aguiar unseated first-term Democratic Riverhead Town Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith. And Democratic challenger Gerard Stiller unseated first-term Republican Shelter Island Town Supervisor Gary Gerth.
Clavin, who has been town tax collector for 18 years, will be sworn in on Jan. 2 during a ceremony at Hempstead Town Hall. Gillen had a few parting words before passing the baton….

- The author of the piece has the Curran as the loser….She is the current Nassau County County Executive and assumed office in 2018 and not up for re-election until 2022.
CG says
Why are Republicans beating national trends in Long Island by unseating Democrats?
jamesb says
Because the people moving into the county are mostly minorities and fairly new immigrants from the middle east and asia who do NOT vote in the numbers longtime resident Republican do….
Democrats did well in 2018….
Some of the two year spots will become vulnerable in next years election’s if there is the expected large voter turnout by Democrats…
CG says
So, where are the previous Democrats going to? Moving out? If the Democrats had been winning elections (2015 or 2017) and now are not( 2019) non-voters would have nothing to do with it.
It would make sense if the newcomers were Republican voters.
CG says
It’s definitely true that Trump did better in Long Island than Romney did. That is about the only non-rural area that can be said of. Is Long Island that “working class?” Everywhere else is the opposite in terms of suburban areas that are considered affluent.
jamesb says
As with most northern state’s
People take their retirement money and move down south where their money goes farther …
Some grow old ….
Some new voters DO vote republican…
Check the other post on this election…I posted a comment by someone who pointed to the strong jewish vote for Calvin who lives close to where they have settled in the town…
CG says
What would make sense is that the Republicans would be moving out and new Democrats would be moving in, making the area more Democrat. That’s how it has been trending by me.
What you are describing in an area becoming more Republican just doesn’t make sense demographically.
CG says
Northerners who are moving south, perhaps to places like NC, GA, TX are likely to make those areas more Democrat, which is the reverse of what happened when notherners moved there a generation or two ago, bringing Republicanism with them to what had been heavily Democrat areas.
jamesb says
I actually know the guy , who for a GOPer is a pretty alright guy…..
What the media does report is that as the collector of taxes ?….He has spend years traveling around the town talking to people about how to deal with property taxes…
Some Democrats probably voted for him because they have interacted with him on a one to one basis…..
Retail politics….
Like i said…
He come off as a likable regular guy in person….
No i didn’t vote this time…
Had to work…
CG says
You should have voted if it meant something to you. You certainly find enough time to work on this blog, but anyways..
That would’t explain why in this one particular urban/suburban area, a reverse trend is occuring of it becoming more Republican, both in terms of 2016 as compared to 2012 and 2019 compared to whenever the last voting for those offices were (two or four years ago.)
Maybe Democrats who are Islanders and Mets fans just like DJT.
jamesb says
The town is Not becoming more Republican…
The voter ‘s lean heavily more Democratic
The County wide executive is a Democrat
Rice and Souza are the House members along with retiring Peter King….
My district which has partly in Queens/NYC is repped by Meeks….
jamesb says
Clavin won by less than 2,000 votes
CG says
But you are describing a race where the Democrat incumbent was unseated by a Republican challenger, just this month, right?
Was the Democrat under some sort of scandal? Were they just a fluke winner the last time?
The point is that this seems to be the opposite of what is occurring in “blue states.”
There’s also Lee Zeldin, so the LI delegation is split 2-2.
jamesb says
Gullen raised MORE money than Clavin….
His position as tax collector, and the other things worked for him….
The vote for him by jewish block probably put him over
jamesb says
it ALWAYS comes down WHO ACTUALLY votes, eh?
CG says
Gullen is the Democrat and raised money money, but lost?
You are also saying that he won because of Jewish voters, even though Jewish voters are heavily Democrat.
I also looked it up and his full name is Donald X. Clavin Jr. so I am pretty sure he is not Jewish himself.
None of these things you are saying adds up for why a Republican would unseat a Democrat incumbent.
jamesb says
They vote in blocks…
Check the other post on this race …
Again….
The new population in the county just does NOT vote in same percentage as the old…
Check the Demographics
CG says
They vote in blocks?
Well, I am certain the Jewish vote in this town probably went heavily to the Democrat, as in the case in most parts of the country with a large Jewish population (save for a very large Hasidic commune type place in Upstate New York.)
jamesb says
Not necessity CG…..
In upstate NY ….In Brooklyn… large blocks of jews vote in monolithic blocks…
If they pick a candidate ?
they would be the deciding factor …
especially if the Democratic vote in an area
doesn’t come out in a off year election…
and
yes
Clavin could be associated with lower taxes
Even if Trump and his party raised them in 2017/2018….
Some latino’s vote for Trump
go figure?
CG says
Ok, I may be wrong for once. This is interesting.
https://yated.com/how-jews-in-the-five-towns-flipped-control-of-americas-largest-town/
Apparently, there is a large Orthodox community there that decided to vote Republican.
It says fear of AOC types among Democrats were part of the reason why.
This story and election result would certainly be music to Trump fans ears.
CG says
Hempstead has 800,000 people? I didn’t even realize that.
jamesb says
it’s the biggest town in the country i believe
CG says
I just tend to associate Nassau County Jews with Fran Drescher, the childhood Jerry Seinfeld, and Amy Fisher’s father.
CG says
It’s basically a County which is calling itself a Town.
Probably unfair.
jamesb says
Nassau County is a completely decentralized place of ‘suburbia’ we have 3 towns that any plane else would have their functions fine by the country which would cut my taxes in half …
but this also makes for GOP jobs and a bit of local responsibility for government …
the job market here is mostly fed by NYC government and business jobs….
CG says
Your CD is mostly Queens. Your suburban area is a very small part of the district and would easily get outvoted anyway.
jamesb says
Meeks always wins by large Democratic pluralities….
Him running would actuality help any Nassau County Democrat…
Some people are better campaigners and people gotta sign up to vote to get representation…
Clavin’s voters will vote overwhelmingly for Trump….
CG says
Meeks represents very little of Nassau County.
It sounds like this election this year there was decided on taxes and despite an historic win for Democrats two years ago, reverted to normal once the people decided they didn’t like the way Democrats were running things locally.
