Cummings was a strong Black presence for Democrats in the House off Congress and was a strident Trump critic…
Longtime Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the son of a sharecropper who rose to become chairman of the powerful House Oversight Committee, has died at the age of 68, his office said in a statement early Thursday.
Cummings died at 2:30 a.m. at Gilchrist Hospice Care, a Johns Hopkins affiliate, “due to complications concerning longstanding health challenges,” according to his office.
In the past year, Cummings relied on the use of a walker and motorized scooter to get around even as he continued at a frenetic pace in the Capitol, leading televised committee hearings and giving interviews to reporters.
The Baltimore Sun noted, however, that Cummings had not participated in a roll call vote in the past month, adding that his office said recently he had undergone a medical procedure.
“Today we have lost a giant. Elijah Cummings was a public servant to his core. He served his constituents in Maryland with dignity and grace, while defending our democracy with a sense of duty and steady strength,” Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the highest-ranking African American lawmaker in Congress, said in a statement.

Congressman Cummings showed a great deal of human decency a few months back as the Chairman of his Committee. He had a genuine friendship with Mark Meadows of NC, the top Tea Party Republican in Congress, even though they disagreed on a great many issues.
Meadows was accused by Rashida Tlaib of racism, a word that so many on the left throw around as if it has little actual meaning, and seeing how that accusation hurt Meadows personally, Cummings tried to defuse the situation and publicly reassured Meadows that he knew he was not a racist.
That was something that Congress and politics in general could use a lot more of. R.I.P.

Cummings like Biden was old school…
One could hope that if Trump is gone some of the bipartisanship will come back…
He will be missed…

I don’t know if Cummings ever told a political audience that a Republican would “put y’all back in chains,”
Likely, he had more principle than Biden ever has.

Great recollection CG that is meaningless ….

as was your comparison of Biden to Cummings…

Did Meadows repay Cummings kind acts and stand up for his friend when Trump called him a racist and mocked him when his house was burglarized?

OK. Good for Meadows. Too bad he had to also praise Trump in his defense of the Congressman. But you can’t expect much else from a Republican in Congress.

The widow of U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings has resigned as Maryland’s Democratic Party chair to run for her late husband’s congressional seat.
Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, 48, is expected to formally announce her campaign at her Baltimore home Tuesday morning, news outlets reported. Congressman Elijah Cummings died last month at age 68.
“I am, of course, devastated at the loss of my spouse, but his spirit is with me,” Rockeymoore Cummings told the Baltimore Sun . “I’m going to run this race and I’m going to run it hard, as if he’s still right here by my side.”…
