Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), another member of the “Squad” of four liberal/progressive congresswomen will also endorse the Independent US Senator from Vermont joining Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)….
Good get for Sanders….
Slap in the face for Warren….
The surprise endorsements are a political coup for Sanders, 78, who has been fading in the polls and faced growing questions about his age and health. Before Tuesday’s Democratic debate, he had been sidelined from the campaign trail for two weeks by a heart attack.
“We’re looking forward to Saturday,” said Corbin Trent, a spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez. Sanders teased the rally at Tuesday night’s presidential debate, saying he would have a “special guest” appearing with him in New York.
In a statement, Omar said she had worked closely with Sanders on several policy initiatives, including a measure to cancel student debt and another to provide year-round school meals.
“Bernie is leading a working class movement to defeat Donald Trump that transcends generation, ethnicity, and geography,” Omar said.
Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir said the congresswomen could excite younger voters.
“You’ve heard Senator Sanders talk a lot about [how] the revolution is going to happen when you have a lot of young people get involved in the process,” Shakir said. “And you have a couple individuals here who I think have a unique ability to inspire young people, so we’re excited about the direction of this campaign.”
The endorsements could be a blow for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)…

I don’t see it as a slap in the face of Warren – just as I don’t see it as a slap in the face of Biden.
Cortez will endorse Warren once she gets the nomination. It is not clear whether she would endorse Biden if he manages to win th nomination.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
After all, AOC voted for Nancy Pelosi to be Speaker. And (although Pelosi has to be guarded to maintain some kind of willing consensus in her caucus) I just don’t see Sen. Warren being to the right of Speaker Pelosi — let alone so far to the right that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez would walk away if Sen. Warren won the Democratic nomination.

Z?….
Politicians have LONG memories….
I would counter you with this….
AOC see’s Biden as the nominee in the end….NOT Warren….
Endorsing Sanders is a SAFE bet for her…
She makes one lefties happy…
But can easily come back to Biden….
She IS a smart politician
My Name Is Jack says
I am glad to see all this hoopla surrounding the endorsement by a Freshman Congressperson.
jamesb says
I agree it’s a none story Jack….
But i’m begins to admire AOC’s political act….
CG says
There have been scant Congressional endorsements for President lately.
Sanders will be getting that of AOC, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. They are big names in the party and it makes sense that Sanders will push it heavily, He has to do something. AOC also backed him last time he ran.
I said yesterday that Elizabeth Warren is probably relieved they don’t want to endorse her. It’s not going to cost her any of the support she already has. One way or another, eventually either her or Sanders will fall victim to the other politically in this race.
My Name Is Jack says
I’m not impressed by her.
Mostly she just seems to want to make provocative statements that seem to get outsized media attention.
I really don’t understand why her voice is so much greater than other Freshman Congresspeople.
Republicans seem particularly interested in her every
Utterance as anything she saysseems to merit a report by Fox News
CG says
She pulled off a huge upset by winning her primary next year and New Yorkers always present themselves as the center of the universe.
Plus, she is telegenic. That’s a huge asset in politics.
My Name Is Jack says
Plus she’s a northern Hispanic “librul” that Fox News knows will stir up the anger of the Trump Cult which comprises the majority of their audience.
CG says
The diversity aspect clearly works both ways.
Racial minority political figures in the Republican Party who are newcomers have certainly been elevated to high standards by the GOP in recent decades as well, i.e. J.C. Watts.
Both parties want to demonstrate diversity.
jamesb says
And have to figure out how to look the other way when their party people say and do stupid things…..
CG says
Did Obama deserve all the hype he had just because he was a freshman Senator as opposed to a freshman House Member?
Had he been elected to the House in 2004 instead of the Senate, I still think he would have been heavily hyped on Capitol Hill.
Her rise to prominence was more unlikely and thus more impressive. I am not saying she has proved herself to be ready for prime time. Much of what she says is cringeworthy.
My Name Is Jack says
I don’t.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
But when the GOP does recruit and select candidates of colour, they’re impressive but just seem to last that long, e.g. J.C. Watts (Okla.), Will Hurd (Texas), Mia Love (Utah), Gary Franks (Conn.) and Sen. Tim Scott (S.C.)
I thought that Scott & Hurd (both retiring) were the entire black GOP bench in Congress, but I see from Binging what I didn’t notice at the time: that Connecticut elected its first black Congresswoman last year: Jahana Hayes — who’s made less of a splash as a member of the House minority than Ayanna Pressley of Mass. has made as one of The Squad.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Of course, I meant “…they’re impressive but just don’t seem to last that long…”
CG says
Tim Scott will still be a Senator.

Democratic Socialists of America
Dear David,
It’s been an exciting 24 hours for our socialist movement. Rep. Ilhan Omar has endorsed Bernie Sanders, and DSA members Rashida Tlaib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are slated to do the same. Our National Political Committee has issued a statement on this exciting moment. We encourage you to share it with your networks. Together, we have a world to win!
In Solidarity,
Your National Political Committee
Ocasio-Cortez and Omar endorse Bernie and the political revolution
In a watershed moment in our movement for economic, environmental, racial, and social justice, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and fellow congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota are endorsing Senator Bernie Sanders for president. DSA member Rashida Tlaib of Michigan is expected to endorse as well.
For decades, Bernie has taken on the wealthy and ruling elite with his call for a political revolution. This call has inspired millions. Since his 2016 presidential campaign, we’ve witnessed the skyrocketing growth of DSA, a surge in the popularity of democratic socialism and policies like Medicare for All, a strike wave of teachers and other workers, and the groundbreaking electoral wins of democratic socialist Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Tlaib and allies like Rep. Omar.
Only a movement made up of millions fighting for a political revolution can beat Trump next November and take on the existential threat of climate change and historic levels of global inequality.
In last night’s Democratic Party primary debate, Elizabeth Warren quipped that she has “no beef with billionaires.”
We do.
Like Bernie — who argues that billionaires should not exist — we know that billionaires are rich because the vast majority of society is poor. Billionaires profit by denying us the healthcare we need. Billionaires profit from privatization, which has destroyed public schools across the country and poisoned the water in Flint. Billionaires profit from mass incarceration, detention, and endless wars. Billionaires profit from the fossil fuels causing climate catastrophe. To keep getting richer, billionaires invest their money in elections to make sure that politicians of both parties protect their profits.
All of the Democratic candidates, except for Bernie, claim we can fix capitalism. But capitalism is working just as it is meant to: those who have the wealth, who own the companies and reap the profits, have all the power. Meanwhile, those who work in those companies and produce the things that make profit have almost no say over our lives or our political system. But when workers organize and fight back, we can take power and begin to build a world that puts people over profit. We should have control over our own lives — we deserve a democratic socialist world.
Backed by a diverse, energetic working-class movement and by democratic socialist politicians like Tlaib and Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders can win the Democratic nomination, beat Donald Trump, and, together, we can transform politics in this country and around the world forever.
Sanders’s political revolution has lasting momentum. After the election, Democratic Socialists of America will continue building this movement and fighting with workers for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, College for All, Housing for All, to abolish ICE, and for an end to mass incarceration at home and imperialism abroad. We are committed to building a fighting, democratic labor movement from the bottom up, and supporting workers on strike, from GM autoworkers to Chicago public school teachers….
CG says
Billionaires should not exit!
I hope Tom Steyer had someone to drive him home from the debate.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Are billionaires an existential threat ?
CG says
Warren has “no beef with billionaires.” How dare she!
What’s for the DSA, “No tofu with trillionaires?”
CG says
That press release is really something!
Why didn’t they have a key for the gender pronouns though?
