Joe Biden’s campaign has opened the door to super PAC spending on his behalf in the Democratic primary, reversing an earlier, self-imposed ban on outside backing as Biden struggles to match rival presidential candidates in campaign cash.
In a statement, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, Kate Bedingfield, accused President Donald Trump and allies of interfering in the Democratic primary to harm Biden. “Those who are dedicated to defeating Donald Trump are organizing in every way permitted by current law” to defeat him, Bedingfield continued — a public signal to super PAC organizers that Biden’s campaign will no longer discourage them.
Shortly after NBC first reported the campaign’s statement, Bedingfield and other top campaign officials held a conference call with donors to explain what one supporter called the “decision to drop opposition” to super PACs.
Biden has said for months that he did not want help from a super PAC supporting his presidential campaign. Super PACs can raise and spend unlimited money, but big money has become a litmus test in Democratic politics. Many other leading candidates have also disavowed such groups, not wanting to invite attacks from other campaigns or alienate voters who have gravitated to anti-big money messages in recent elections.
Biden has already faced attacks from Democratic primary rivals for relying on bigger money than other candidates to fund his campaign — though he has still been restricted by the $2,800 maximum donation individuals can give to candidates for president in the primary.
