A familiar face in Central New York, Howie Hawkins has received the Socialist Party USA nomination for the 2020 presidential race.
Hawkins’ campaign says that’s one step closer to building a campaign to earn the Green Party endorsement, looking to earn nominations from several parties that range from Progressive to Socialist, uniting the independent left to challenge the democrats and republicans.
Hawkins is no stranger to running for office. He most recently placing third in New York’s Governor race. He supports clean energy, expanding funding for education and universal health care….

Less than a non factor.

He, he, he
Ya gotta be in it to win it?

I would actually love to see a documentary that follows one of these 0.2% presidential candidates like the Constitution or Socialist or Prohibition nominees around.
Nobody has any clue who they are I am sure.
jamesb says
i didn’t….
I wonder if DSD has any idea about this guy?
Democratic Socialist Dave says
I know a little bit about the Socialist Party USA which split off from the old Socialist Party of America/Social Democratic Federation in 1973.
Although I identify with DSA — the SP-SDF splinter that generally works within the Democratic Party — I even sat in on SPUSA’s 1995 national convention (to write a story I never started), where I renewed my acquaintance with David McReynolds, who ran as their presidential candidate in 1980 and 2000.
But I know very little about the current state or views of the SPUSA. The late Dave McReynolds, with a long history in the socialist, civil-rights and anti-war movements, felt compelled to resign from the SPUSA a year or two before his death. And my fuzzy impression is that the group has moved pretty far left (although not in Communist direction).
Back in 1995, it had decided not to apply for membership in the
Socialist International (Labour, NDP, SPD, etc.)
But even DSA has now left the International, after apparently turning rather left itself .(Membership quadrupled after the Sanders campaign, but I don’t know if there’s any correlation between a flood of new members and national party policy. DSA members voted overwhelmingly to endorse Bernie Sanders in 2020. )

Democratic Socialist Dave says
I know nothing about Howie Hawkins, but — save in a very tight D-R race like Florida in 2000 — the Socialist Party is exceptionally marginal electorally.
It hasn’t even qualified for the ballot in more than ten states at one time and has never on its own won as much as 11,000 votes (or 0.02 %) nationally.

Howie Hawkins is also likely to win the Green Party nomination.
As I have said before, if the Democrats nominate Warren or Sanders or someone like that, these parties are a complete non-factor. Their voters will be very comfortable with the Democrat nominee.
If Biden is nominated, it is perhaps a different story,
CG says
As some may know the nominee of the Prohibition Party is Phil Collins (former P1 commentator,,,,,, perhaps the only one I ever met in person), but his campaign website contains use of the official GOP elephant logo.
What would be a good animal mascot for a teetotaling party?
CG says
A camel?
CG says
Ok, apparently that’s what they have actually used. I must have known that somewhere in my subconscious…..
Scott P says
Yeah if Biden is nominated ole Howie Hawkins is gonna be a HUGE factor. Lol
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Can’t you just imagine that hypothetical progressive voter, who in disgust with both parties, just throws up his or her hands and says
“Ain’t a dim’s worth of difference between the two candidates of monopoly and privilege — I’m voting for Howie Hawkins !!”
