While the Utah GOP US Senator is questioning?
In the end it’s doubtful he’d cross Trump…
He has a history of voicing doubt ?
But falling in with Trump in the end…
Sen. Mitt Romney said President Donald Trump’s request that Ukraine’s president investigate a political opponent was “deeply troubling” but shied away from saying whether it rose to the level of impeachment.
“My reaction was the same as I had a few days ago which is that this remains deeply troubling,” the Utah Republican said Wednesday at The Atlantic Festival in Washington. “And we’ll see where it leads.”
Romney spoke at the forum shortly after the White House released a rough transcript of a single phone call Trump had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wherein the U.S. president suggests Ukraine work with Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Guiliani, and Attorney General William Barr to investigate the son of former Vice President Joe Biden and his dealings with a Ukrainian oligarch….

CG says
Doubtful he’d cross Trump?
He’s been doing it since 2015.
According to Bill Kristol, Romney spoke to Pelosi yesterday to tell her that there would be support among Senate Republicans if it goes to impeachment.
He is clearly saying the House has a job to do. That is what Robert Mueller was saying as well several months ago.

The Wash Post digs for Republican Senator’s un
happy with Transcript memo release…
…Three Senate GOP aides said Wednesday that their bosses were unhappy with the White House’s decision and the sense that Republican lawmakers were being forced into the difficult position of defending Trump while contending with what many Democrats see as a problematic transcript.
But other Senate Republicans, allied with Trump, were dismissive. “Wow. Impeachment over this?” Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) tweeted. “What a nothing (non-quid pro quo) burger.”…

Mitt has the closest thing ti a spine in the GOP caucus
That ain’t saying much though
Keith2018 says
So Saint Mitt has “concerns” and is “troubled,” turns into Susan Collins with a dick, and he is suddenly a “ profile in courage.”
If that’s the best the Republicans can do then they truly are a sorry group of losers.
I haven’t had much opportunity to read this blog since the politics of Great Britain is currently mirroring ours and that has consumed my attention. But Boris is as ugly, inside and out, as Trump and he said some of the most outrageous things last night in Parliament about a murdered MP, murdered by a right wing terrorist, and used the murder’s language in doing so. He is now seven for zero in his attempts to manage the Brexit crisis, and the Supreme Court handed him another loss. His Party then attacked the Court, where have we heard that before?
Obviously the Democrats now have no choice other than to impeach Trump, and of course it won’t be successful in the Senate. But Trump gave them no choice. This isn’t a game, although some folks here appear to think so, it’s illegal, dangerous, and anti-intellectual. A situation brought to you by the Republican Party. They created Trump and universally stand behind him, that’s just a fact.
The only way to remove Trump is to elect a Democrat next year. Anyone who doesn’t agree, doesn’t understand politics and is simply irrational and delusional. The situation on both sides of the Atlantic is dire, two sociopaths are in charge. They need to be voted out.
jamesb says
Yes Keith Trumpism in full bloom here across the pond….
Keith2018 says
I will believe Mitt will support impeachment when I see it. After all, Trump could still make him his running mate next year. Mitt couldn’t possibly refuse that.
If Mitt really wants to save the Country and his Party, he can challenge Trump for the nomination, just like Kennedy challenged Carter.
Also, it’s important to note that simply voting third party isn’t really voting against the winner (in this unfortunate case Trump in 2016), unless you vote for the candidate with the only other chance to win.
As next year, the only way to beat Trump and save our Democracy is to vote for the Democratic Candidate.

So far ,Senate Republicans seem to be moving more in the position of “managing “ the crisis, than even pretending to remaining neutral arbiters.
Of course several have already pronounced Trump Not Guilty.
Once again I reemphasize impeachment is both a legal and political process so their movements are not surprising.
Moralistic arguments about impeachment being the “right thing” to do may satisfy ones sense of morality but it has nothing to do with the simple reality…
There is no way Trump is going to be convicted in the Senate.
Zreebs says
Well then, if “doing the right thing” isn’t important, then go for impeachment because it is th smartest thing to do politically. People respect politicians who have principles. Anyone who is not calling for impeachment at this point doesn’t deserve to be in office – and that certainly includes Democrats.
And finally, there IS a small chance that the Senate will impeach. I recall you previously said that there was no chance that the House would impeach. Let’s make a decision after the hearings are held. A lot of Republicans only support Trump because they feel it is in their political interest to do so. Maybe it won’t Be in their interest after the hearings.
My Name Is Jack says
I don’t think it’s the “right thing to do politically.”
I stated yesterday that I felt like it will not have a major effect on the election.
Those who oppose Trump are still going to oppose him, impeachment or not.
As for his supporters, they have shown for the past almost three years now, that they don’t care what Trump says or does.I find it remarkable how so many are acting as if this phone call is some kind of “breaking point” with them. There is nothing to suggest that at all.
I agree with Keith.Impeachment is likely now.Apparently that will satisfy lots of people ,including you.Ok.
It doesn’t change things politically though .Removing Trump at this point would fracture the Republican Party as it can only be done with likely at least 22 or so Republican votes in the Senate. No,I don’t think that is possible.
Anyone who thinks that Trump would go quietly into that goodnight is engaging in a fantasy in my view.Likewise, believing that his millions of dedicated followers would meekly accept such and simply cast him off and eagerly support a Republican alternative is just as fantastic.
Republican Senators understand all this and very few are going to be willing to risk this.
Would it be good for the long term future of the GOP?Arguably, yes, I think it would be.Unfortunately though it is very difficult to get people to always act in their long term future(see climate change efforts). All is built around the here and now.
So,yes, it looks like impeachment may be in the offing.Conviction in the Senate? No
As Keith said above, you want Trump gone? You are going to have to beat him in an election.
jamesb says
I will go with the political point on impeachment…
There is absolutely NO chance that legally generated impeachment charges will amount to ANYTHING if the political position of Americans remains as it is right now AGAINST removing an American President from office…
THAT IS IT….
My feeling is and has been that a impeachment with a Mueller answer will simply allow Trump to c correctly run against Biden or Warren saying …’I’m 2-0 against you Democrats…Which will embolden his base…
Yes…
My view is a bit defeatist…
But so far?
The Democrats eat their own consistently and going for a half assed effort to get rids of the guy, instead of working on next November’s election turnout, could turn out to be a ANOTHER fuck up for Democrats…
Threaten the guy with impeachment ….
Badger him…
But let him hang himself POLITICALLY. for the next 14 months…we’ve gotten this far..
And THEN?….vote his crazy ass out of office…
jamesb says
IF?
The public DOES move to support the action of impeachment?
AND?
The US Senate GOP situation CHANGES?
This dog would be ALL for impeachment….
CG says
What a profile in courage you are!
CG says
The one thing that would *most* depress Democrat turnout in 2020 is that party being spineless on impeachment.
Most likely the one thing that would *increase* Democrat turnout in 2020 would be the sense that “Trump got away with something again.”
Scott P says
As Keith and Jack noted the only realistic way to get Trump out of the Oval Office is to vote for the Democratic Presidential ticket next year. That is something I will be proud to do.
Scott P says
In the meantime impeachment will happen. I am for it as the crimes are too great to be ignored. But I know the end result will be aGO Senate acquittal.
CG says
You recently saw a Governor of your state taken down by his own party. You didn’t expect that at all either at first.
jack swore up and down that SC Republicans would *never* take down the Confederate flag, and then they did like a week later.

What if we don’t want Trump or a Democrat? Many people don’t. Stop trying to be cutesy. It’s irrelevant. IN the meantime, one thing at a time.,,

Plenty of people would pay to squeeze the orange at my juice stand. I guarantee it.

Sen. Collins dancin…..

Decisions should be based on a sense of right or wrong.

jamesb says
Agreed on your decision throw down CG….
What is ‘Right’ is to VOTE DJT out of office , NOT fail to impeach him…
CG says
He should be impeached and if he is still running be voted against. Both can be true.
jamesb says
Nonexistent unless somehow the media IS able turn impeachment into a issue that matters to majority of Americans….

The things you mentioned going south fro Americans IS what they are concerned about….

Lindsey Graham said a quid pro quo would have to be “thuggish” in order to be an inapproproate request.
I’m sure that raised ole Lindsey’s stock with South Carolina Confederate flag waving Republicans
CG says
I am about to join a very exclusive club of Americans-
In the history of the country, very few Presidents and Governors have been impeached and now I am about to see three of the people I have voted against, to have held those jobs, to be impeached.
Clearly, I was correct in the way I voted.
Who can match that?
Also, I took part in a successful effort to recall a Village Trustee.
CG says
We could try to increase the group (a little bit) by counting Nixon, but even the Democrats here voted for Nixon in ’72.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
And Nixon was never impeached; he resigned first, after Barry Goldwater & co. told him how few Senators would support him if the House should impeach him.
jamesb says
Good point DSD….
Only if the public pushes the Senate GOPer’s to say they WOULD vote against him would DJT begin to have to deal with either quitting of making history
