Thursday’s Democratic primary debate was the first time all the leading candidates were onstage together. The most illuminating exchanges were not between Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Elizabeth Warren, who met onstage for the first time, but from other pairings. Here are six highlights from the debate.
It was the best of Biden, and the Biden of Biden.
Once again this debate season, Mr. Biden came under the fiercest and most sustained scrutiny, from his ideological foes, from a former cabinet mate and even from the moderators. He was pushed on race, on deportations, on health care and, in an intense exchange, on his age.
But in the end, Mr. Biden exited the stage the same way he entered it: the embattled-yet-clear front-runner, no matter if his meandering syntax and twisting verbal gymnastics sometimes failed to land clear points.
One difference from the past two debates: He did begin to articulate more of his own case for the White House, rather than simply saying President Trump must be stopped. In particular, Mr. Biden came armed on the crucial topic of health care, with lines to joust with Senator Bernie Sanders and Ms. Warren over their support of an expansive Medicare for All plan.

A new Siena poll in New York shows Joe Biden leading the Democratic presidential field with 22%, followed by Elizabeth Warren at 17% and Bernie Sanders at 15%.
They are followed by Kamala Harris at 4% and Pete Buttigieg at 3%. No other candidate tops 1%…

Tech entrepreneur and political newcomer Andrew Yang notches 7 percent support in the survey, with Harris following at 6 percent support.

Yet, the First thing Any Republican Administration does is advocate massive tax cuts for the wealthy.

If we could only go back to the Eisenhower tax rates our budget would be balanced in no time.

Canada’s intelligence services are carefully monitoring the threat of agents of the Chinese and Indian governments working with diaspora communities here to influence the upcoming federal election, according to a number of sources who have been briefed on their activities.
Those sources — who spoke to CBC on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record — also said intelligence services are monitoring efforts by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela to influence the election campaign, while an integrated intelligence unit has been giving political parties bi-weekly briefings about foreign actors’ activities in Canada.
The government and intelligence sources said one of the ways foreign countries go about pushing their agenda in Canada is by attending nomination meetings to help select candidates favourable to their causes.
These countries lean on the work of intelligence officials posing as diplomats in embassies and in consulates across the country, primarily in British Columbia and Ontario, said the sources.
Top Canadian officials were warned last year that China and India could try to use their links to diaspora communities in Canada to advance their own agendas.
The situation hasn’t reached a level yet that would compel the critical election incident public protocol group — the government team set up to sound the alarm if it sees evidence of the October federal election being undermined — to go public.
Such physical interference is far from new in the world of international espionage, and the sources stressed that Canadian intelligence agencies are closely watching the actions of foreign countries in the time left before the Oct. 21 election.
Former CSIS director Ward Elcock, who also served as a deputy minister of national defence, called the tactics employed by China and India “old school” spying.
“It’s not the new school of the Russians using the internet to interfere in the U.S. elections by moving public opinion in this direction or that direction. It’s the old way of trying to recruit people, trying to secure influence and make connections,” he said.
“Sometimes they’re seeking influence. They would like to affect Canadian policies.”
All of the nations said to be attempting to influence the election have reasons for trying to boost their clout with a key American ally like Canada. …

The latest YouGov/Economist Poll shows Trumps approval among Republicans at 85%.
In the nomination race,Trump has the support of 86% of GOPers while Weld has 5%, Sanford 2% and Walsh 1%.
If I recall Pat Buchanan had pretty low numbers when he began his primary challenge to GGW Bush.
Not that I’m predicting Weld Sanford or Walsh will get 40% in New Hampshire like Buchanan did against Bush.
The GOP ‘3’ will probably get a few more percentage points , but even they will tell u their runs are symbolic ….

Buchanan though had the ability to raise money from RightWingers who were never “all in” with George H Bush,particularly after he reneged on the “no new taxes” pledge.
Weld has apparently raised a few hundred thousand and Walsh hasn’t raised anything.Sanford has converted his remaining Congressional campaign account,about 1.3 million ,to his presidential campaign.
So,unless these candidates find funding sources, they will not have the financial ability to run any sort of campaign and will be reduced to appearances on cable news shows.
Then there’s the question of where exactly they are even going to compete ?As state Republican parties,on orders from above, cancel their primaries.
As long as Trump maintains the level of support among Republicans he presently has ,I see no prospect that any of this is of any significance.
The ‘GOP 3’ WILL get media attention no doubt…
Trump will also go after those same media outfits…

Read the book. It’s very sloppy and unreliable. Filled with factual mistakes that should never have gotten past editing. I also read Bob Woodward’s book which is likely far more accurate.
It was fine for me….

Democrat Denise Burgess announced Thursday that she ended her campaign for Colorado’s contested Senate seat only days after initially announcing her bid.
In a statement emailed to supporters, Burgess gave no explanation for her departure from the campaign but stated that she would be committed to seeing Democrats take the seat in 2020….

I suppose it might be possible one day, if trends continue, that a lot more people will have Democrats as bosses and those who created their jobs.
