The firestorm over images of Justin Trudeau in racist garb has yet to have a discernible effect on the race, according to an aggregate of surveys from the country’s pollsters. Trudeau’s Liberal Party and the rival Conservative Party remain tied with less than one month to go before the Oct. 21 vote.
The overall popular vote tally stands at 34 percent for the Liberals, 34 percent for the Conservatives, 12 percent for the NDP and 10 percent for the Green Party, according to an aggregate of surveys from a half-dozen Canadian pollsters. That’s nearly identical to last week’s aggregate, which had the Liberals down by one point.
Trudeau’s party still has a subtle advantage in the way the votes are distributed: It holds a 15-point lead in Quebec and a five-point lead in Ontario. Those are the two provinces with the most seats, where the election will be mostly decided.
Abacus Data CEO David Coletto said he’ll be watching new polls coming out this week to gauge the full reverberations of the controversy on voters, which he said could still be significant.
“The race remains deadlocked despite the release of photos and videos showing the prime minister wearing brown and blackface,“ Coletto said. “This could change over the next few days, but the initial impact seems to be minimal so far.“…
