President Trump urged the nation Monday to condemn bigotry and white supremacy after a pair of mass shootings and focused on combating mental illness over new gun-control measures in remarks delivered from the White House.
“In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy,” Trump said. “Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart and devours the soul.”
His nationally televised comments followed a weekend of carnage in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, that left 29 people dead and scores more wounded. The shooter in El Paso appears to have posted an anti-immigrant screed on social media, and authorities are seriously considering charging him with federal hate crimes.
Trump condemned the “two evil attacks” and vowed to act “with urgent resolve.”
He outlined a number of possible steps, including so-called “red-flag laws,” that focus on better identifying mentally ill people who should not be allowed to purchase firearms.
“Mental illness and hatred pull the trigger. Not the gun,” said Trump, who did not take questions from reporters.

He also called for cultural changes, including stopping the “the glorification of violence in our society” in video games and elsewhere.
Hours earlier, on Twitter, he called for “strong background checks” and suggested pairing gun legislation with new immigration laws, a top priority of his that he has failed to move through Congress. Trump did not elaborate on his call for stronger background checks during his televised remarks.
Trump made a similar call to strengthen background checks after a mass shooting last year at a Florida school and has since threatened to veto bills passed by House Democrats seeking to do so…..
We’re more like to see this chain of action from Trump….
George Conway predicts what will happen:
- Trump will go on TV and give a speech. On paper, the speech may say some of the right things. It will look somewhat presidential. There’s an off chance it might even be good (grading on a curve).
- But the problem will be that it was given by Trump, who’s incapable of sincere empathy. So it’ll be hard to believe that he believes the words he said. And his speech won’t address his own hateful, racist rhetoric.
- So he’ll be roundly criticized for that. And he’ll also be criticized on policy grounds, because whatever he says on that score will not suffice for many people.
- He’ll see and hear all this criticism on TV, and he’ll stew. And stew. He’ll grow angry and resentful that he was forced to give the speech in the first place.
- Finally, perhaps within 24 or 48 hours, the narcissistic pressure will break the dam, and his anger and frustration will gush forward.
- He’ll tweet, otherwise say, or do something that’ll completely undo whatever positive benefit came from the speech.
- We’ve seen this movie before how many times?

For a President and White House so eager to find (or invent) new executive powers so that Donald Trump can do something (or stop something) without leave from Congress or the courts, there’s one black-and-white power right in the Constituion that he could use if he were actually as serious about mass shootings as he claims. And (the Senate Majority Leader notwithstanding) he should be challenged, loudly and frequently, to exercise it.

As is pointed out in my post a few minutes ago he’s already backed away from his early ‘checks’ suggestion and now is trying to sell people’s state of mind as the issue….
