All the crowing about Donald Trump’s party and his approval among GOPer’s in the 80’s is masking trouble for both on several issues….
After TWO mass shooting’s within 24 hours?
Gun Control gets added to the list of things Republicans have to worry about…
And as usual?
They will stall until the incidents leave the media focus and do nothing….,
“The GOP needs to make several moves such as universal background checks, eliminating loopholes and banning military-style assault weapons to neutralize the issue,” he said. “Otherwise, Republicans will lose suburban voters just like they did in the midterms on health care.”
While most Republicans have opposed expanding background checks and banning assault-rifles, GOP Senator Lindsey Graham said Monday he cut a deal with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal on “red flag” legislation to assist and encourage states to keep guns away from people who are found to pose an imminent risk of violence. Many Democrats said that wasn’t enough and called for a renewal of the assault-weapons ban and universal background checks, among other measures….
….
The renewed debate captures a dilemma for Trump as he revs up his re-election campaign with appeals to rural Americans steeped in a rich gun culture. But he risks alienating upper-income suburbanites, who can make or break his prospects, if he’s seen as unwilling to take action to stop frequent mass shootings.
All of the major Democratic candidates are running on gun control measures, including tougher background checks and banning assault weapons, setting up a stark contrast with Trump….
Gun politics have shifted since President Barack Obama avoided the issue in his 2008 and 2012 campaigns for fear that it was a political loser. During Obama’s first term, the country was evenly divided on whether gun laws should be made stricter or stay the same, according to Gallup. By October 2018, support for stricter firearm laws outnumbered support for maintaining them by 31 points…..
Democrat tend elevate gun control during these mass shootings…
NO Democrat is calling for the old ban guns purchases outright anymore….
Nor are they running on the NRA try of saying that people should have to give up their handguns…
America , after all, does have a culture of guns ownership….

Suburban voters, particularly college educated ones, have been deserting Republicans for awhile now.Indeed they helped flip the House last year.
And what any of this has to do with Trumps approval rating ?Only someone who has no understanding of any of this would attempt to link the two.
What is your point James? Are you insinuating that these people are part of his “approval” stat? That is self evidently absurd.
When you can’t make a rational argument?Just make it up.
You’re hilarious!

The fact remains?
As you just typed…..
“Suburban voters, particularly college educated ones, have been deserting Republicans for awhile now.Indeed they helped flip the House last year.”….
Glad to see you agree with me…..

Few of these people still call themselves Republicans.
That was the point.
You were trying to make some absurd point about Trumps approval rating vis a vis these suburbanites who don’t even call themselves Republicans.
Yeah obviously I “ agree” with you.
Idiotic.

Thank You….

I saw a quote the other day that basically said the suburbs of Dallas and Houston are starting to vote like the suburbs of Denver, Chicago, and Philly.
That will be a huge problem for Republicans in Texas if that continues. The suburbs of the Lone Star State have always voted more GOP than their counterparts in thr Midwest and Northeast.
Also the exodus of conservative Californians to Texas has likely slowed. All of them that were gonna move are already gone!

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) indicated Thursday that he will not bring the Senate back early from its five-week August recess to debate gun legislation, despite pressure from Democrats.
“We’re going to have these bipartisan discussions and when we get back hopefully be able to come together and actually pass something. I want to make a law,” McConnell said during an interview with Kentucky radio station WHAS.
Pressed if he was saying he would not call the Senate back before their currently scheduled Sept. 9 return date, McConnell added: “If we did that, we would just have people scoring points and nothing would happen…

The background check bingo game is going on…
Trump says he want them…
NRA warns him against….
MvConnell isn’t on board even as Trump says Mitch Is on board….
Actually?….He isn’t

It’s more likely that Trump will support ,and the Republican Senate may pass, a so-called “Red Flag” law which ostensibly would allow law enforcement to seize weapons from unstable people.
The problem of course is that federal attorneys are unlikely to take the time or effort to enforce such.Accordingly, like a lot of federal laws ,it will be “on the books” so to speak but rarely enforced, more of aPR statement.
State adoption of such laws would be a step forward ,although given the procedural doe process safeguards that would have to be observed ,even such would be of limited value.
