The new law covers ALL candidates …..
New York has a law that allows Trump’s New York’s tax information to go to the US House Ways and Means Committee…
It seems the state are working better than Congress to force Donald Trump to show his tax and financial information to America, something EVER other President has done in modern times….
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Tuesday signed a bill requiring President Trump to release his tax returns before he can appear on the state’s 2020 primary ballot.
Under S.B. 27, called the “Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act,” any candidate running for president or governor of California will be required to file copies of the last five years of their tax returns to the California secretary of State.
“As one of the largest economies in the world and home to one in nine Americans eligible to vote, California has a special responsibility to require this information of presidential and gubernatorial candidates,” Newsom said in a statement.
“These are extraordinary times and states have a legal and moral duty to do everything in their power to ensure leaders seeking the highest offices meet minimal standards, and to restore public confidence. The disclosure required by this bill will shed light on conflicts of interest, self-dealing, or influence from domestic and foreign business interest.”
The bill was overwhelmingly approved by the State Assembly and Senate earlier this month.
It includes an “urgency clause,” meaning it would take effect immediately and force the candidates running for president in 2020 to disclose their financial statements….
Note….
Trump lawsuit against this will be on its way soon….

I don’t think this is going to hold up.

I guess you REALLY think Trump can run his shit with NOBODY checking on it?
bdog says
I agree with Jack, you know this a lawsuit and a trap, they will request an injunction, primary will go forward and the case will still be in court,
New York’s Law if they push it out is a little more problematic cause they can just release his state taxes which reveals some not all of his money.
Follow the money…heheheh
CG says
Even Newsom and the California legislators who voted for it fully expect the law to be thrown out in the courts.
jamesb says
Throw out?
…
According to Richard Hasen, professor of election law at the University of California Irvine, the requirement is the first of its kind. While a legal challenge seems inevitable, he says, the courts have not weighed in on the issue previously….

Nearly a dozen similar bills are active in other states, including New York, New Jersey, Washington and Pennsylvania, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures….

Erwin Chemerinsky, the dean of the law school at the University of California, Berkeley, and a First Amendment expert, said he was confident the state was on firm legal ground. He said that states also have the right to make a similar requirement for a general election ballot, and that he hoped other states would do so.

I’m FOR this since it would change nothing for future candidates EXCEPT Trump…

Typical emotional outburst …
I never said any such thing.
Im simply stating that I don’t believe this law will hold up in Court.

I hope the tax info requirement DOES….
One of the results of Donald Trump’s ineptness will one to spotlight gaps in accountability , policies and the use of power by American President’s…
Those problems spot light the inability of Congress to monitor or clip the wings of a chief executive …
So far?
Only the judges and courts have been able to limit Trump….
And New York state…
California and more states will be joining the efforts…
I’m surprised at you Jack….
SOMEBODY has to be able to place some limits of Trump and yes…The American Presidency itself…

My view is simple.Tax returns are not per se public documents.Anyone, including a presidential candidate ,has the right not to make his tax returns public.I have the right not to vote for him.
If we want to change the qualifications for the office of President to require making ones tax returns public then let’s do it.
Until then , such remains a personal decision of each candidate.
As for Trump? No matter what is in his tax returns his Cult followers will still follow him, a fact that seems to elude you.
You seem to believe that his supporters are going to desert him.Theyre not to any great extent.Indeed, based on polling .his support has remained remarkably stable over his term despite all that he has said and done and the myriad matters that have come out about him.Indeed, it appears that the more negative things that come out about Trump simply seems to harden his support.
You rely on anecdotes to support your daily claims that he is losing support.Using anecdotes rather than actual statistics to support a point of view carries little weight with me.It seems to satisfy you though.
Good for you.

Tax returns , by law are reviewable by the House, who writes the tax code….
Trump is fighting THAT VERY Law…
He took the job…
Nobody forced Trump….
But he DOES tend to try bend laws that me and you would NEVER do because he pays his lawyer and WE pay his government lawyers to try let him escaped the LAW…
This isn’t really POLITICAL Jack…
This is LAW…
On the state level…
Each state writes the rules….
I see NO problem with a state doing what it wants…

WE could write a book on how many LAWS Donald Trump has broken ….
Almost EVERY day a judge or a court orders him and his admin to follow the LAW…
His admin bars lawmakers from government facilities to inspect detainee conditions…
I wrote this this morning…
Trump is pushing lawmakers to codify behavior for future President’s ….
So be it…
He’s that guy that fucks up a good thing for everybody….
Everything he touches turns to shit!

As Jack predicted…..
The conservative group Judicial Watch on Monday announced a legal challenge to California’s new law that prevents President Trump from appearing on the state’s 2020 primary ballot unless he discloses his tax returns.
Judicial Watch is representing four California voters who filed a lawsuit last week in federal court in Sacramento against California Secretary of State Alex Padilla (D).
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) last week signed legislation, S.B. 27, that requires candidates for president and governor to disclose their tax returns in order to appear on the state’s primary ballot. Under the law, candidates have to provide their federal tax returns from the five most recent taxable years to the California secretary of state at least 98 days before the relevant primary election.
The lawsuit alleges that California doesn’t have the authority to impose on candidates a qualification to disclose tax returns, because it goes beyond the qualification requirements for the president that are laid out in the Constitution. The lawsuit also alleges that the new law violates the plaintiffs’ rights under the First and 14th amendments of the Constitution….
