He’s kinda forgotten…
But he IS out there….
President Donald Trump’s sole Republican primary challenger, former Gov. Bill Weld, said Wednesday that his campaign raised $688,000 from donations during the second quarter of 2019.
The Weld campaign told ABC News that since jumping into the race in mid-April, they’ve raised short of $700,000 from 7,000 total donors. And on top of supporter contributions, the former Massachusetts governor also poured $181,000 of his own money into the campaign, bringing the second quarter total to $869,000. The average donation for the quarter was $98, according to the campaign.
The haul represents the first look at Weld’s fundraising efforts for his long-shot challenge to Trump, who remains historically popular within the Republican Party and has yet to acknowledge the former governor’s campaign….

While Weld has not caught fire yet it’s worth noting that the last two one term Presidents (GHW Bush and Jimmy Carter) both faced primary opponents. The last 3 reelected Presidents did not.
jamesb says
Good get Scott….
I’m saying Trump will be added to the list….
Scott P says
Of course that is my hope as well.
If we go further back Richard Nixon faced two GOP primary challengers–both Congressmen– Pete McCloskey from the left and John Ashbrook on the right.
He easily survived his primaty chsllenges and went on to a landslide reelection.
My Name Is Jack says
Weld isn’t a serious candidate .
He’s simply trying to embarrass Trump by getting a decent vote in a few states.
Weld was last heard from in 2016 as the VP candidate of the Libertarian Party. Before that he was considered a”moderate” New England Republican ala Susan Collins.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
And just before Carter, Gerald Ford (appointed VP, succeeded to Pres.) had a very close battle with Gov. Ronald Reagan, which Ford narrowly won only to lose narrowly in the 1976 general election.
Before Ford, Nixon had only nominal opposition in 1972 from Pete McCloskey on the left of the GOP and John Ashbrook on the right, while LBJ (another unelected President) faced a rather more serious challenge from George Wallace in the 1964 Democratic primaries (not that Wallace could ever have won the Democratic nomination). Johnson didn’t even enter the 1968 primaries, conceding to Robert Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy and passing his own hat onto VP Hubett Humphrey’s head.
However at the moment, Trump looks likely to match Nixon by marginalizing a nominal GOP opposition.
jamesb says
NAACP convention in Detroit.
Said Weld: “Donald Trump is a raging racist, Okay? He’s a complete and thoroughgoing racist. And he made that choice, a choice a long time ago, when he was engaged in the housing business in New York with his father.”
He added: “The national Republican Party, has a choice. And a lot of them like to think that it’s a political choice. But it’s not a political choice. It’s a moral choice. Unless the Republican Party in Washington expressly, expressly rejects the racism of Donald Trump, they’re going to come to be universally viewed as the party of racism in America.”…

Some CBS/YouGov poll numbers about race and tweets that seem even more appalling a couple of weeks later (at least insofar as the current soul of the rank-and-file Republican of today).
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/most-americans-disagree-with-trumps-go-back-tweets-cbs-news-poll/
Agree/Disagree with content of Trump’s tweets
82 %/18 % of Republicans
42 %/58 % of Independents
12 %/88 % of Democrats
40 %/59 % of all Americans
Is diversity making Congress better/worse/neither
63 % – 13 % – (24 %) of Democrats
28 % – 40 % – (31 %) of Republicans
Ideas expressed in Trump’s tweets were (among Republicans)
64 % pro-American
13 % un-American
23 % neither
and much more at source
jamesb says
So as I pointed out yesterday with Jack….
Only his 80% of support for Republicans is a good number…
The guy is hurting with everything else….
I just do NOT see how he does it again….
My Name Is Jack says
You “don’t see?”
Well, lots of other people do.Youve even posted articles that explain very clearly how Trump could be re-elected even while losing the popular vote by millions.
It’s where the votes are cast, a rather simple concept.
He can win states like Pa.,Mich, and Wisconsin by several thousand votes while getting blown out in places like California and still win.
You seem to have difficulty understanding that these polls you cite constantly reflect national numbers and are not broken down by individual states which would reflect probable electoral votes.
Wake up!
jamesb says
Jack?
I KNOW you have this fatalistic view of Donald Trump reigning for the next 3 centuries….
I DO NOT….
In see some of so called support as soft around the edges….
Evidently so does his handles as I have pointed out in the last post I did last night about him shutting the fuck up about trade for the time being…
He won’t last for 17 months…
He’s incapable of not making thing worst for himself…
Sure he CAN win all 50 states Jack…
He won’t…
He’s NOIT gonna win all the state he did last time….
Why?
He’s got a HISTORY..
Last time he ran against a weak opponent selling himself as the guy who could do it all and avenge the 8 years of a black/mixed race American leader…
None of THAT is the reality we live in…
If fact I have posted state polls here continually…
And recently pointed that except for Florida?
Joe Biden, infighting among Democrats and all?
Has leads at the MOE in them or above….
Jack?
I’m not buying your ‘I give up already’
I AM pointing to mountain Donald Trump has to climb by threading a needle….
We’ll BOTH see who is right….
My Name Is Jack says
What a crock!
I was merely pointing out ,in response to your post ,that Trump could win ,even while losing the popular vote ,even substantially .
Such a view is certainly not unique to me ,as many others have also pointed out
I have never said Trump is sure to win.Indeed, I would rate him the underdog at the moment. However, I would neve make a statement lik you made that ,based on some polls ,I don’t see how he can win.Yes, he could.
The rest of your tirade was a mishmash of barely coherent hyperbolic nonsense that is oh so typical when anyone responds to one of your dumb statements.
Yes, even if he loses the popular vote by several million votes, Donald Trump can still win.
That was my only point.
Now put you pom poms away, cut the shrill cheerleading ,and please ,please concentrate on reading comprehension!
jamesb says
He, he, he….
I never had pom, poms out!
Democratic Socialist Dave says
I don’t know if RCP, Electoral-Vote.com or Election Projection have yet started an Electoral College map for 2020 ( I couldn’t find one), but two other sites we often use do show this as a tossup.
This month, 270ToWin showed 232 Electoral Votes in states which are leaning to certain Democraic, 219 in those leaning to certain Republican, and 87 tossups (Az, Neb 2, Wi, Mich, Pa & Fla)
https://www.270towin.com/
and last February, Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the Univ. of Va (Mr. Jefferson’s University) showed 244 on the sure to leaning Democratic side, 248 on the GOP side and 46 tossups (Az, Wi, Pa, NH & Neb. 2)
http://crystalball.centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/2020-president/
It’s still a race for either the Dems or the GOP to win or lose (especially if the GRU and FSB target the most useful states for the GOP).
jamesb says
Thank as usual DSD..
The story is the SAME. as i pointed out….
I know everyone was shaken by Trump’s surprise victory….
But it will be FOUR. years later and RIGHT NOW?
Even with Trump support strong within his party poll respondents?
Donald Trump IS running BEHIND. Joe Biden the Democrats’ Front runner…
Biden isn’t Hillary Clinton…
CG says
Hillary had leads over Trump that were larger and later. Of course, we do not have the election decided by the popular vote.
It could be that Biden turns out weaker than Hillary (though that would be quite a task.) It is definitely the case though that Biden is far less of frontrunner for the nomination than Hillary ever was in 2016.
CG says
Frankly the entire narrative over the shaky performance of Bob Mueller (and I think he was largely given a raw deal), is bad news for the narrative involving Biden and age. Everything is about television these days and even when he was a young man, Biden seemed to be from somewhat of a bygone era.
CG says
Along those lines, remember way back when, Mueller went to the cameras and read a statement that as pretty damaging to Trump. He made it clear he would have no more to say beyond what was in the report.
I said then it would be a mistake for Democrats to try to get him to testify since nothing new would be provided and Republicans could only work to make things into a circus or to hurt Mueller’s credibility.
Well, that’s exactly what happened. Democrats should have realized they received a gift from Mueller’s statement (and the ethically right thing to do would be to start impeachment proceedings) but they made a mistake in insisting on a hearing that Mueller told them would be pointless.
Scott P says
Surprise surprise.
You always think Democrats are doing the wrong thing.
You are a Republican. Other than supporting Trump you support what Republicans do.
CG says
That’s a non-sequitur if there ever was one. It’s been a long week I am sure.
The only person at the time when I said this about Mueller testifying to disagree with me was james.
Scott P says
I said earlier that this whole Mueller testimony changed nothing. No one’s minds were changed on either side. You, of course, state that It was bad for Democrats and good for the GOP.
Like I said..surprise surprise.
CG says
I didn’t say it was good for the GOP. You are imagining things. It was a pointless exercise that turned out to be bad for the Democrats because they overplayed a hand.
I feel like Mueller deserved better. Both sides had their own agenda, regardless of what he was going to say. He kept his word about what he would say, but appeared to be a bit “past his prime” as others here said that day.
jamesb says
No mistake CG….
And yea…
They get little out of Mueller’s terrible performance
CG says
I don’t blame him as much. He has never done this sort of Congressional hearing thing before. He’s not a politician. He is very professional and very precise (and yes, a little bit slowed by age now). They needed to speak slower and to specify what page they wanted him to look at.
jamesb says
In the beginning ur right
Democrats where running at the guy way too fast….
But he took the job….
My feeling is he has no balls…
He should have stood up and said Trump’s no good…But i can’t charge him….!
CG says
No, that’s not his job, and you can comment about his “balls” when you win Purple Hearts and Silver Stars, as he has.
jamesb says
My comment is on this case….
The man gets his props for going in harms way for our country…
Actually i thought up front that his service would push him to speak out on his reports conclusions….
A LOT of us where dusipointed
he could have called it..
he’s a private citizen now
Barr can do a damn thing to him
CG says
He was bound by Justice Department guidelines in his testimony. He was not testifying as a private citizen. That’s not how it works. He respects the law and the process.
Since you are opposed to impeachment, I don’t even understand your point. You should be happy that impeachment is far less likely now.
The only thing Mueller could have done is to get the ball rolling for impeachment. If he stood up and declared Donald Trump was guilty! guilty! guilty!, that is all that could have happened.
You can’t even keep these concepts straight.
The Report speaks for itself. There is ample reason to impeach DJT.
jamesb says
CG?
Robert Mueller COULD have simply Said….
Yes….Anyone else I would have indicted..
He already said he wouldn’t challenge the Justice policy….
My Name Is Jack says
I stated afew days ago that Mueller and his report are now a part of history.
I see him as neither a hero nor a villain. He was a bureaucratic attorney who did his job.
There will be no impeachment.
It is remarkable really that so much time and effort is being expended on something that is in reality ….over.
jamesb says
Hillary was a lousy campaigner…
My Name Is Jack says
“The Story is the same as I pointed out.”
James
You “pointed out” nothing of the kind.
First you said that you didn’t see how Trumpcould win again.
Then ,after falsely accusing me of predicting a Trump victory, you confidently predict that Trump isn’t going to win the states he did last time.
Finally, when DSD posts that the toss ups include the states Trump did win last time and that the race is wide open, you announce,”the story is the same as I pointed out.”
I know you don’t understand how ridiculous this makes you look and that is rather sad in itself.
My Name Is Jack says
Actually this little sequence of posts by you is very Trump like with a conclusion that totally contradicts the statements previously made.
jamesb says
I AM impressed with ALL attention you are paying me….
I DO remain in disagreement with u on Trump’s re-election chance….
jamesb says
Trump IS behind now and will need some fancy footwork to even eek out a win…..
CG says
Right now, I definitely have a hunch that Warren will be the nominee when all the dust settles (and perhaps unifies the party by picking Harris to run with her.)
Trump vs. Warren? Absolute coin-toss right now. I and many others would bemoan not having another option, if none exists.
Of course, all things in politics can change quickly.
jamesb says
He, he he…
Trump vs Warren?
First it was Sanders….
Keep praying…
CG says
Why would I pray for that?
Scott P says
You aren’t going to support any Democrat that has any chance of getting the nomination.
And there won’t be a third party candidate of any note so we all know you will bitch and moan about the choices we have and then write in some nonsense like Dick Cheney. Be h3 alive or dead at that point. Either way, a wasted vote.
CG says
Again, it’s always funny coming from you since you more than one time have done the exact same thing… but no, not a wasted vote, if one’s conscience is clear.
When I have pledged allegiance to America, nowhere was it ever said that one must vote for a Democrat or a Republican.
jamesb says
CG you don’t like Trump
But u keep picking Democrats that CANNOT beat him….
Why be so obvious?
CG says
I’m not picking any Democrats. As Scott reminds us,I don’t vote for them.
I simply have a hunch that Warren will be nominated (I never thought Sanders would, but was correct early on last cycle when I said repeatedly that Warren would have beaten Hillary had she run, instead of Sanders)
None of this means that I want Elizabeth Warren to be nominated or to be President. I am sorry that concept is too complicated for you.
CG says
And I said, I would classify a Warren vs. Trump race as a “coin-toss” today, so clearly it is very possible she could beat him.
I do not think Sanders can beat him.
jamesb says
Trump would beat her with ease…
She is focused solely on big business and Trump chew her up for breakfast…
Sanders is worst..
Both Biden and Harris would favor better against Trump….
But then u know that , eh?
CG says
Well, Scott should scold you since you are unwilling to vote for Elizabeth Warren against Trump.
CG says
Trump is not going to beat anyone “with ease.” He is a very polarizing figure. A German Shepherd would take over 45% of the popular vote against him, just to start. Even more if the German Shepherd was not seen as a socialist.
jamesb says
True that on the German Shepard….
CG says
I am not so sure that Harris would be tougher for Trump than Warren, but that can be an open case.
With Biden? Who knows? It’s going to be a roller coaster ride. He could prove to be the most electable Democrat by far, or he could crash and burn like nobody else in the field possibly could.
