This REALLY isn’t news…
Over and OVER it bears repeating….
67 US Senator’s would have to vote “Aye’ for a conviction…
There are 53 Republicans senators…
There are 47 Democratic senators…
Democratic senate leader Schumer probably couldn’t even count on a full 47 of his party to go along…And McConnell has Trump back….
Under the Senate manual’s rules for impeachment trials, the presiding officer — likely Roberts — would rule on all questions of evidence, but any senator could ask for a formal vote to appeal a decision. Under the Senate rules, it takes a majority to sustain or overrule a ruling from the presiding officer.
Democrats would need to persuade at least four Republicans to break with McConnell in order to bring in any witnesses or exhibits he decides to block.
That would mean winning over moderates like Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine) or vulnerable senators in swing states, namely Sens. Cory Gardner (Colo.) and Martha McSally (Ariz.).
Murkowski told The Hill on Thursday that she hasn’t given much thought as to how a Senate trial might play out.
Democrats, however, are skeptical they would get much, if any, Republican support to overrule McConnell.
“There are 47 Democrats. On a good day, even when the president is at his most outrageous level, only three Republican senators will publicly say so,” said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.)….

Of course it’s not..
Any idiot knows this and it’s why this impeachment talk is totally superfluous to much of anything.
Impeachment is a hybrid. Its both a legal process and a political process. It only works when the two mesh.Like the Clinton impeachment in the late 90s ,this effort is doomed to failure and should be abandoned.
Pelosi totally gets this and has done a skillful job so fa in keeping this under wraps.Hopefully this will start to fade away
as a practical matter?
It is going nowhere.
jamesb says
Yes Jack….
He’s a a look ….
Democrats in SAFE place will continue to hack it….
Democrats in not so safe places , for Trump land will NOT…
Republicans KNOWING this will rub in Democrats faces…
And the media will prominently highlight it EVERY chance they get…
Finally?
Trump knows the above…
But is still so scared of it anyways that he will still fight it in public….
My Name Is Jack says
This whole Mueller Report business?
A colossal waste of time.
Who here really believes the Republicans in the Senate would have voted to remove Trump from office even if Mueller had alleged “collusion?”
There was Never a chance of that happening.
jamesb says
I disagree with the waste of time view….
It HAS done what it was supposed to do….
Investigate and make a report to Congress…
Mueller has tried NOT to ac tally get involved in the political judgement….Just the legal…
He will be compelled to follow up sooner or later in person…
I believe the first step will be written…
His 10 or so examples of legal issues are the still the basis of Congress containing oversight of the executive branch…
Trump and the ‘Big 8’ know more than the media and u and me…
In the legal sense he, and others HAVE committed crimes…
Those without thew word ‘President’ in front of their name have pleaded guilty to crimes, some have gone to jail, all have sung like birds giving Mueller, Congress and the public a extensive view of criminality in the Trump 2016 campaign…Muewller STILL has others charged in seal indictments that have gone at least 3 other US Attorneys…
Mueller’s investigations have also dovetailed with state civil and some criminal investigations…
‘Waste of Time?’
Hardly…
While Mueller has ducked coming out and saying it…
He HAS found his subject of investigation….A sitting President himself and others able to be charged with crimes…
THAT is important…’
And had and has scared the shit out of Trump….
Unfortunaly you and many off us are RIGHT…
With the US Senate firmly in Republican hands?
There will be NO conviction….
Trump now finally with a AG that will do his bidding under the misplaced view that a US President is above the law has set upon a purge of those who questioned his, and his people’s criminal acts….
Barr….And to some aspect Mueller ….
Are failing g the very country they have sworn to protect…
Donald Trump is a serial liar…
He NEVER has done much for America…
He’s always been about HIMSELF…
And despite the bull shit…
Most of what he touches turns to shit…
Hopefully this horror show only runs for another 18 months…
My Name Is Jack says
My contention is that it has essentially tied up the government over the past two years.
Sure there were a few “convictions” that nobody gives a damn about.Indeed, Scott me of the convictions were over technical aspects of the investigation itself, not the underlying matter being investigated.
I tire of all these “investigations “myself.
Essentially ,Mueller says there is insufficient evidence to prove “collusion “ and lists a bunch of things Trump did that one could claim was “obstruction “ if one so desires.
Sorry, I just don’t think all the hoopla was worth this when we all knew there was no way the Republican controlled Senate was ever going to do anything no matter what this “report” showed.
It’s the endgame that matters and there never was an endgame.
jamesb says
I understand you want a conviction and removal from office…
But Mueller’s prob3es ARE important in digging into what went down during the 2016 comapaign….
And infact Mueller gave 10 or so situations that he highlighted as possible criminal acts for anyone BUT as President….
His goal was to present his findings TO Congress…
He was prohibited by DOJ policy from pressing criminal charges…
The Law doesn’t…
Mueller HAS shown himself to be hesitant to actually go public against a sitting President even if he questioned the legality of his actions…
These investigation where never gonna be open/shut things …
And they will continue ….
My Name Is Jack says
James I really do “understand “ investigations.
You do understand that the purpose of an “investigation “ is to uncover facts leading to a prosecution or to “clear” an accusation up.
The Mueller “investigation has done neither as regards Donald Trump.
Those who thought he was “guilty” of something still do.Likewise, those who thought it was all a”witchunt” still do.
Apparently you are in favor of “investigations” just for the sake of “investigating.”
As you say they will “continue.”
jamesb says
Mueller’s report is in….
But other investigations continue
There are MANY unanswered questions
He is the President
We need answers
My Name Is Jack says
What “answers” are you looking for James?
Do you believe he committed “collusion?”How about “obstruction?”
jamesb says
The term collusion is not a crime…..
Conspiracy IS….
Obstruction IS….
Mueller in his 10 or 11 bullet points touches on the two crimes…
U give the Republican view on Mueller’s
Report…
That is what he is being called in to clarify…
You ARE a lawyer Jack
Absence the DOJ policy?
Trump COULD have been indicted
Mueller I believe says so…
Do I believe crimes and felonies where committed?
Damn Real!
But as u and others point out
This isn’t about the law which I believe he and others broke
It’s about voters and elections for the US SENATE and President….
CG says
I don’t think that’s what Mueller said.
Essentially, Mueller said about Trump what Comey said about Hillary. To me, the situation are all very similar.
He said it was up to Congress to determine what should happen to Trump politically, and that is true.
jamesb says
Read the 10 or 11 things Mueller put down
He CLEARLY has said he doesn’t give Trump a clear bill on possible criminality…
CLEARLY..
My Name Is Jack says
But most of the “obstruction “ was known before Mueller report.Indeed, a lot of it was reported on the TV news!
I have no cplained in the past that 0bstruction” is in many cases a very subjective standard and is difficult to prove because it requires that you prove “intent.”
Is there a case to be made against Trump on obstruction.Sure.So What? The Senate Republicans hav made it plain .They are not going to convict him.
So what’s the point?
jamesb says
The point is the public polling confirms the view that Trump’s election HAD some underhanded things involved….
You urself pointed to concept of working the public as a second jury …
CG says
The public believes that Trump was legitimately elected.
Democrats trying to claim otherwise to fire up their base is not going to do them any favors.
Democrats have to at least try to understand why so many people voted for Trump.
jamesb says
I beg to differ with ya CG
Donald Trump lost the popular vote
And has had majority support from Americans for about 10 minutes…
CG says
I think james misstates the conclusion of the Mueller Report in regards to prosecution of a President.
My understanding is that Mueller made it clear that the issue did not play any role in his conclusions.
jack is largely right on this matter. The Mueller Report speaks badly about Trump and his people but among those “persuadable” voters, very few care, for good or bad. Everyone else has largely made up their mind.
As we heard in the ’90s with Clinton apologists, “it’s the economy stupid”, and really nothing else should matter in terms of character or conduct in office.
james has said he opposes impeachment so I am not sure what else he wants to see happen at this point. All the back and forth on Capitol Hill just makes everyone look bad to those who are not already firmly in their tribe.
The next election gets closer day by day. Democrats should find someone with the capability of beating Trump if you think he is so bad.
I think he is really bad too but I’m not convinced one way or another as to how you guys will fare in a traditional two-way election. There’s a lot for both tribes to be nervous about.
jamesb says
What I want going forward with Donald J Trump is the factual truth that he is trying to hide from the American public…
He is NOT Trump the private real estate guy anymore…
He’s supposed to follow the rules like everyone else…
His taxes…
His real estate.
His business actions …
Those things which EVERY other modern day President has revealed to earn our trust Trump is fighting against….
THOSE THINGS are what we ALL should want…
Holding his responsible for crimes?
Unlike others ?
I believe that an American President’s great powers are even MORE the reason that if crimes are committed by that person?
There should the right for a criminal charge brought against them..
Other countries do it
The office of the America President should not be a cover for criminality
That Barr the AG is subservient to Trump is UN-American…
CG says
Spoiler alert:
Trump is never going to tell you the truth.
I know you are frustrated that he got elected President. I’ve been frustrated with all but two Presidential elections in my adult life.
People already know he lies. Many don’t care. They were told not to care about lying when Bill Clinton was President. Maybe we as a society can recognize the danger in that now.
Try to win the next time. Maybe your guy can. But following what you want would probably just help Trump.
jamesb says
He, he, he
Thanks for reminding me CG😉
Yea ….
My Name Is Jack says
Unlike you ,I believe the vast majority of the American people Do know all these things about Trump.
Yet, a substantial number (around 40% or so) still support him, including about 90% of the Republican Party.
For some reason, you simply refuse to concede this point and continue to claim, with no factual foundation, that Trump is losing their support.
It almost seems that you think that somehow more “information” will change their minds when there is simply no indication that it will.
jamesb says
Jack?
The US attorney for The Sourhern District of NY named Donald Trump as uninducted co-conspirator in the Michael Cohen case ….
Oh, wait?
Trump was labeled as ‘subject #1’ in court papers …
But that office had the balls….
CG says
james, several Presidential elections throughout our history have been decided via the Electoral College. It’s in the Constitution and it is 100% legitimate.
Claiming otherwise is not going to help Democrats.
Believe me, if the roles were reversed, you would be accepting of the EC victory result vs. the popular vote.
(I am remembering now my first ever college class in Political Science in the fall of ’96. The Professor said the Electoral College issue is a ticking time bomb that eventually will result in someone being elected that did not win the popular vote and when that happens, there will be mass riots in the street and potentially a Civil War. Well, it’s happened now twice since then and we have gotten through it fairly peacefully.)

Bush II and Trump.in the last few decades…
But Bush II recovered with the public somewhat,
Trump ain’t going that way now and MSU never.,
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Leaving aside the “corrupt bargain” of 1824 (when none of the 4 candidates, all nominally Democratic-Republicans, won either an Electoral College majority or so much as 42% of the national popular vote), the four elections where the Electoral College victor trailed the loser in popular votes are:
1876 Tilden (51%) vs Hayes (with 4 disputed Electoral College delegations were decided 8-7 by a special panel chosen by Congress
1888 Cleveland (inc.) vs Benjamin Harrison
2000 Gore vs GWBush
2016 H.illary Clinton vs Trump
All four popular favorites who lost in the Electoral College were Democrats; all four popular runners-up who still became President were Republicans.
Since the GOP’s founding in 1854, the Democratic candidate has won the popular vote in 21 elections and the Republican one 20.
But the difference in candidates becoming President is only 17 D to 24 R.
[Popular vote plurality:
21 D – 1856, 1876, 1884-92, 1912-16, 1932-48, 1960-64, 1976, 1992-2000 & 2008-16;
20 R – 1860-72, 1880, 1896-1908, 1920-28, 1952-56, 1968-72, 1980-88 & 2004]
[Electoral College majority:
17 D — 1856, 1884, 1892, 1912-16, 1932-48, 1960-64, 1976, 1992-96 & 2008-12;
24 R – 1860-80, 1888, 1892-1908, 1920-28, 1952-56, 1968-72, 1980-84, 2000-04 & 2016]
