Axios has piece from Mike Allen that is REALLY stupid…
There is little to no reason to think that the Democrats will have brokered convention next year…
Joe Biden has led the pack since before he even declared…
The nomination is his to lose….
The idea that over 20 people running behind him are going around a year from now is ludicrous …
If Democrats aren’t united after Super Tuesdays primaries ?
Donald Trump is gonna glide to a second term….
Mike Allen is a good pundit…
But we all have our off days….
Well-wired Democrats say that the massive 2020 primary field means that the nominee may still be unclear when Democrats head to Milwaukee for their mid-July convention.
“In this new political environment and with changes in technology, there are fewer barriers to entry for candidates to enter and remain in the race. These changes encourage more candidates to enter the race and stay in longer.”
— said Doug Sosnik, former White House political director for President Clinton

The Return
Well,I’m back.
What I didn’t say when I departed in October Last was that I had received some medical news that I interpreted to mean that I might not be around much longer.Despite my doctors admonition that I was taking the news too hard ,I convinced myself that morbidity was around the corner and I should simply wait the inevitable, depression if you will.In the last few weeks my situation has greatly improved and I feel as if I have a new lease on life.
Accordingly, I am returning to the give-and take here.I have found that I miss the jousting with the regulars here, most who have seemingly disappeared along with me.Hopefully they will return and resume our daily bloviating on the issues of the day.
One thing you may note is that while I remain a partisan Democrat,I find that of late I am more interested in seeing the country return to a less acerbic time.Of course I will likely violate my own standards, but hey?We are all fallible.
So CG, Keith, Zreebs, Scott. If you’re out there ,come in back.Lets get the old juices flowing again and James before you receive one of my well deserved verbal blasts? Thanks for keeping the place going.
Let er rip!

Glad to have you back!….
I’m also glad you’ll be around for a LONG while!…
Things where very quiet…
But I’m sure our debates will get ur blood flowing!

As to the idea of a so called “brokered convention?”
The last time a national convention went more than one ballot was the Republican Convention Of 1952.Since then the “brokered convention “ gambit is hauled out every four years.
For sure it is “conceivable” for all sorts of reasons and advent of social media surely has revised the rules of the game so to speak..Still?I regard the idea as remote in the extreme. In my view the urge to defeat Trump among Democrats will overcome many of the loudest voices on the Left and the Party will rally around the candidate perceived to have the best chance of winning the election.
jamesb says
I agree….
It would seem that Mike Allen has seen what we all have seen…
That is?
Joe Biden has the nomination to lose…
The horse race thing from the media just isn’t there for Democrats…
Democratic Socialist Dave says
While rank-&-file Democrats tell pollsters by a pretty impressive margin that they value a candidate’s ability to Defeat Trump over the closeness of his or her views to the respnodent’s own, I think it would be a capital mistake to wander over to the mushy middle.
George McGovern (like Barry Goldwater 8 years earlier) may be a dramatic example of lurching too far away from the center, but there are counter-examples of the failure of too much moderation and timidity, most recently Hillary Clinton (JB’s fave) in 2016, but also John Kerry (misguided by Bob Shrum) in 2004, Michael Dukakis in 1988, Walter Mondale in 1984 and Hubert Humphrey in 1968.
Now I think that Joe Biden can legitimately appeal both to moderates and to progressive activists (may of them Sanders supporters in 2016), as well as to moderate Independents, even some (such as skilled workers and Rust Belt residents) who voted Republican in 2016.
But Delaney, Hickenlooper and co. would fail to arouse either progressive activists or disillusioned and apathetic voters in the middle.
Amy Klobuchar may disagree with my own leftish views, but she seems quite capable of supporting her position with solid arguments.

Third tier candidates REALLY do NOT count…
They are running on substance to try to gain a foothold with the media…
As others have pointed out…
Most of them HAVE to know they have no chance but are running to gain national attention…
In addition, if some strange thing was to happen and a lower tier person what to somehow rise to the top?
Trump would;d eat them for breakfast…
There is NO Barack Obama on they go-round….
And we need a old timer to put Humpty Dumpy back together again…
jamesb says
Some Democrats WILL be worried about the concept of a front runner like the Hillary run….
But Biden isn’t here and has her mess-up to guide him…
Best of all?
Biden CAN run against Trump’s record IN office and from the past….That’s something Hillary did NOT have

Welcome back Jack! Glad to hear you are healthy.
I may be able to visit here periodically, but my workload of my “new” job in NJ is unreasonable, and I just don’t have the time that I once did. So I am looking elsewhere, but finding a new job is never easy, and I am going to be selective on where I move to. It has to be a place I can afford. The cost of living in NJ is ridiculous.
I can’t say that I miss the bantering back and forth from everyone, although I always enjoyed hearing from you and a few others. But I have no patience or desire to debate people who defend Kavanaugh’s attempted rapes that he wrote about in his yearbook, and who calls Lindsay Graham one of his favorite senators. Who knows, maybe CG now believes that there were “good people on both sides” at the nazi rally, but the truth is I don’t care what he or any other hypocrite thinks.
Given the rule changes on how delegates are chosen, I don’t agree with you and James that a brokered convention is extremely unlikely. Unlikely, perhaps, but not extremely unlikely. I expect the Democratic race to be hotly contested.
jamesb says
Glad to hear from u Z….
Sorry they are woking you hard….
We of course would love to have some of regulars back here….
Lot of GOPer’s I would hope will come to their senses and vote for Biden instead of making the same mistake they made 2 years ago…
Ok…
You think the Democrats are gonna somehow trey to actually reach down and pick a lower tier name to run against the expected Trump second term try?
REALLY?
If things are SOOOOO messed up that Dem’s haven’t fallen behind a winner after ‘Super Tuesday’?
They will be in deep trouble….

Good to hear from you Zreebs.
You might want to consider South Carolina.Outside of Charleston the cost of living is fairly low.Even Charleston isn’t bad ,except for housing.
The politics is pretty Right Wing but the coastal Republicans are generally sort of old line conservatives rather than fire breathing Right Wingers.
Hope you can come around as often as possible.
My Name Is Jack says
The delegate selection does theoretically offer more of a chance of abrokered convention.
I feel though that oneof the candidates will likely break out and the others will feel so much pressure to fall in line that the rules won’t matter as they will start to drop out and release their delegates who will then vote for the frontrunner.
jamesb says
The Democratic bottom feeders are already neglected and won’t have any money….

Hi Scott,
Hope you can join in the conversations again.Back after a health scare .

Glad to hear you are feeling better Jack.
Good luck on the job search Zreebs. Speaking of coat of living that is one of the best things of living on my blue island of a red state. A job similar to mine paying s bit more did open up in Phoenix though. Helping tilt a formerly red state blue would be a nice fringe benefit too.
