He’s actually said he wants no war several times in public, though he’s a serial liar…
My feeling is that something WILL be dropped to the media every few days to let them apply the beat down pressure….

The timing of the Pentagon’s new deployment announcement itself is curious, given that [Defense Sec] Shanahan himself seemed to downplay the immediacy of any potential threats just days ago. “I think our steps were very prudent and we’ve put on hold the potential for attacks on Americans and that’s what’s extremely important,” he told reporters after a closed-door meeting on the issue with lawmakers on May 21, 2019.
“I’d say we’re in a period where the threat remains high and our job is to make sure that there is no miscalculation by the Iranians,” he continued, without offering any new information about the reported threats. “I just hope Iran is listening. We’re in the region to address many things, but it’s not to go to war with Iran.”
For their part, the Iranians also insist they are not looking for a war with the United States, but will also defend themselves if necessary, raising concerns about the potential risk that either side could misinterpret additional military moves into or within the region as potential threats. It remains to be seen how the regime in Tehran will respond to the new American force posture.
On May 24, 2019, two Democrat Senators, Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Chris Murphy of Connecticut, the former of whom is the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that Trump Administration was also now looking to use the supposed threats from Iran to invoke an emergency clause in the Arms Export Control Act to expedite arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other countries without Congressional approval….

I don’t necessarily disagree ,but it is curious that one who doesn’t “ want” war would appoint one of the best known “ war hawks “ in the country,John Bolton, as his National Security Advisor.
Then again, Trump is so ignorant as to government, that he might not have known much about Bolton when he appointed him.

I see this as a typical Trump operation….
He has used with with NATO , North Korea and his pursuit for wall money….
There is NO WAY even the Republicans are gonna stand by and let him initiate another Iraq type war with a country that has a large American liking young population…
Add to that a military that has been there…

I see NOTHING that would sustain a serious full scale military campaign against a country that would lose a straight out war…

Well,maybe it’s how you describe “ base.”
For sure ,some people who voted for him last time won’t this time.Those were what I would call his “ marginal “ voters,people who either ,couldn’t stomach Hillary or simply looked upon Trump as the lesser of two evils,plus a scattering of people who voted for him out of protest ,who really didn’t think he would win.
None of the above would I describe as his “ base.”
In my view, his “ base” is self identified Republicans and some who call themselves “ independent,” although they almost always vote Republican.
And among that group? No,he’s suffered almost no slippage in support over the past two and a half years.
Hogan, Amash, Weld, Romney etc….
These people HAVE dared to question their party leader..
They have to have company out there in the GOP forest….
Could be by marginal supporters…Sure
But I’m thinking some ‘hardcore’ base farmers, rust base laid off workers, along with some people who have lost their healthcare ins are gonna either not vote?
Or…
Hold their noses and vote against Trump…
This worries the Trump supporters so much that they will eat their own party members that even whisper out loud against Trump…
You can “think” all you want and maybe they will desert him.
