Donald Trump’s opening gambit against NATO has resulted in something unthinkable since World War II….
Europe pushing American military reliance aside….
EVERY American President in modern history has supported a united military in Europe….
Sure the’ve all asked the Europeans to spend more on Defense…
But THAT has not been a deal breaker….
Donald Trump has been different and it appears he’s pissed off the Europeans, who worry that a American President chummy with Russian President Putin and attacking them with tariffs and doubts about the old military common cause’s could very well leave them high and dry….
BTW?….The EU is already proposing a requirement for American’s to get visa’s come 2021….
Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson on Monday warned against the creation of a European military force separate from NATO.
“Anything that Europe does to increase the percentage of its GDP that goes to defense is a good thing,” Wilson said a talk at the Future Security Forum, according to the Washington Examiner.
“But I think the most important thing for Europe to consider, and NATO has always thought this way, is that it is vital for the security of Europe to maintain the close connection with Canada and the United States.”
Wilson also reportedly warned that if a European force appears to be disconnected from its North American allies, “then that will weaken us all.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel echoed that call in November, telling the European Parliament that a “real, true European army” was needed.
Both leaders suggested that the U.S. may no longer be a reliable partner in defense….
This is probably more of a pushback than anything else…
(American Military leaders below the White House level have gone out of their way to support NATO even if their Commander-in-Chief hasn’t)
The American military is heavily integrated with the Europeans….
This kind of talk will most likely go away with a one term Trump Presidency…
But if Trump was to get another term?
