The New York Democrat has recruited former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chief spokeswoman Meredith Kelly to head the communications staff for her prospective campaign and a handful of other seasoned Democratic operatives for senior staff positions, The New York Times reported Friday.
Gillibrand is headed to Iowa next weekend for a visit with voters and prospective on-the-ground staffers in the first state to hold presidential caucuses or a primary, Politico reported Thursday…..
Sen. Kamala Harris has reportedly decided to run for president in 2020 and is expected to announce her candidacy on or around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to KCBS Radio. The station reported that sources close to the senator say that she will announce her candidacy at a campaign rally in Oakland. However, other sources close to Harris have denied the rumors. Harris has been reluctant to answer whether or not she intends to run, but told CNN on Wednesday that she believes the country is ready for a woman of color as president. The radio station reported that Harris decided to run after receiving the blessing of her husband and their two stepchildren. Her team has reportedly been looking for a location that could give her a “Springfield moment” similar to Barack Obama’s campaign launch in 2007 at the Old State Capitol in Illinois….
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker is spending the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday in South Carolina, a key early state in the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
Booker, D-N.J., was invited by South Carolina state conference of the NAACP to speak on Jan. 21 “because of his history of support for quality public education,” said Dwight C. James Sr., executive director of the group.
As mayor of Newark, Booker joined then-Gov. Chris Christie and Mark Zuckerberg on Oprah Winfrey’s show to accept $100 million from the Facebook founder for the city’s public schools.
South Carolina is one of the four early primary and caucus states in presidential elections, and its large black population could be a boost for Booker, the first African American elected to the Senate from New Jersey….
Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown is preparing the biggest step yet toward a potential presidential campaign: a trip to Iowa in the coming weeks, which is in the final stages of planning and will soon be announced, according to four people with knowledge of the trip.
Going to Iowa would be the latest signal from Brown and his wife, Connie Schultz, that he is considering a White House run organized around the “dignity of work,” the theme of his reelection campaign last year. But preparations go beyond public statements as Brown’s longtime aide and current chief of staff, Sarah Benzing works backstage to set up a campaign — with a particular focus on Iowa, where she grew up and worked on a series of congressional, Senate and presidential efforts earlier in her career….
