Ford Motor Company will deliver 156 examples of its new Police Responder Hybrid to the New York Police Department, starting in the spring of 2019. Ford says the car is the first pursuit-rated hybrid police car, and it is based on the Ford Fusion Hybrid.
Annual operating costs for each Police Responder Hybrid are estimated to save the city between $4,300 and $7,000 annually, based on gas prices between $2.75 and $4.50 per gallon, and in comparison to the previous Ford Taurus-based Police Interceptor sedan. Across the fleet of new hybrids, that amounts to millions of dollars over the lifespan of the car.
Fuel economy is rated at 40 mpg in the city, and like the Fusion Hybrid the Police Responder Hybrid can operate purely in electric mode at slower city speeds. Furthermore, the car’s lithium-ion battery pack powers onboard equipment such as computers, lighting, and ticket printers. This means the car’s gas engine spends less time idling, contributing to fuel savings…..
