Federal agents have reportedly raided the Chicago City Hall office of a lawyer who previously did tax work for President Trump.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that federal agents removed everyone from the office of Chicago Finance Committee Chairman Ed Burke on Thursday morning, covering the floor-to-ceiling windows with brown paper.
A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office declined to comment when contacted by the Sun-Times. A man who answered the door of the office when a reporter knocked also declined to comment.
Burke’s office did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
Burke worked for Trump for more than a decade doing property tax work.
Burke’s law firm of Klafter & Burke has worked with Trump’s companies repeatedly to reduce the property tax that Trump Tower and his other properties in Chicago have had to pay, according to the Sun-Times.
Over his 12 years working for Trump, Burke was allegedly able to cut the property taxes on the downtown tower by more than $14 million.
Burke stopped working for Trump this summer, citing “irreconcilable differences” in letters filed with the Illinois State Property Tax Appeal Board….

The raid was done in Illinois ….
Are we adding the US Attorney’s office in that state to other Mueller satellite US Attorney Offices handling the Trump investigations in NY and Maryland?
This had nothing to do with Trump. If it had been , the law office would have been raided, instead of the Aldermanic offices. This was confirmed by law enforcement to Chicago media sources.
This is about a very powerful Chicago Alderman who has been in office since 1969 and may be facing some serious trouble now.
As a side note, Alderman Burke’s wife is a long-time Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. She was just sworn in to another term yesterday, in the midst of all of this. They made it a private event though instead of doing it publicly.
Burke’s claim upon returning to his house yesterday was that he has been in office for 49 years and has been investigated many times and that he thinks nothing will come of this.
Not exactly a great message to voters. He is up for reelection in a couple months and his district grows more and more Hispanic. His State Rep, brother was ousted in a primary this March.
I wouldn’t count out Burke getting re-elected….
Happens all the time that people in legal trouble STILL get voted back into office before the bottom drops out….
Governor’s and Congressmen come to mind…..
To quote the Chicago Sun Times.….
‘A source told the Sun-Times the raids were in response to new allegations, and not prompted by any past controversies that have swirled around Burke. That means, for now, the investigation isn’t focused on Burke’s property-tax-appeal work for President Donald Trump, or Burke’s oversight of a city workers’ compensation fund, among other matters.
It doesn’t mean, however, that those dots won’t be connected later…..’

One would image that caught between a rock and hard place?
He’d sign like a canary about his former client to get some advantage…
This is NOT a good look for Donald Trump….
Mueller’s people HAVE to b waiting to send FBI and IRS agants out to speak to this guy…..
Not his income taxes.
Taxes related to the property he owned in Chicago.
I think there are bigger fish to fry as it relates to those investigating Trump.
There are NO Bigger fish than a sitting President….
Heck, Burke might be asking for the Mueller people to come talk to him….
I’m sure this guy’s lawyer isn’t stupid…..
Whatever trouble Burke is in with the Feds has nothing to do with Trump and whatever trouble Trump is in with the Feds has nothing to do with Burke.

But he WAS Trump’s tax lawyer, until 2017, I believe….
