As I feared after yesterday’s election, things are going to get much worse.
The Democratic House is a necessary and welcome check, but Trump’s hostile takeover of the once-grand old party has progressed much further. The Republican Representatives who lost their seats yesterday were generally moderates from the East and Midwest, making the House in the 116th Congress even more reactionary and beholden to Trump than the 115th is now. This has been intensified when the President’s endorsement of right-wing Trump loyalists in party primaries over more independent Republicans has been followed by the general-election victories of those loyalists (e.g. Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee).
At the same time, Trump also feels completely vindicated (against expert advice from professionals and the congressional GOP) in having inflamed the most incendiary explosives in American society, not hesitating where useful to employ lies, resentment, prejudice and pure bigotry. He will now feel free to shed the irksome restraints of the Establishment.
As for Never-Trumpers and Main Street Republicans like CG, they seem doomed. Their best hope seems be to unite with the Wall Street/Silicon Valley wing of the Clintonites inside the Democratic Party.

There’s no room for someone like me within that party. They would not want me and are unwilling to moderate to any extent to appeal to people like me, i.e, conservatives.
There are people who live in areas such as mine, which used to be heavily Republican, though and who might be somewhat more moderate than me that are increasingly aligning with Democrats. Where Democrats have had strong candidates, in the suburbs, they have been successful, Democrats who have been too far to the left have continued to lose.
We are very divided as a country, especially between metropolitan areas (in all parts of the country) and small town/rural areas.
The 2020 Presidential election per conventional wisdom of a traditional two party race is a 50/50 proposition right now. Tribalists on both sides feel smugly assured of victory and are unable to understand why hald the country finds them unacceptable.
As someone who finds both sides unacceptable, I will hope for something to happen to shake up the status quo and a lot of NeverTrumper/Main Street Republicans and pro-business Democrats feel the same way I do.

Thank God the Demicrats took the House because as Dave notes it is now the Trumplican Party.
Never Trumper Republicans are completely irrelevant now and living in a dreamworld.

It may be anecdotal, but on another site, people who were die-hard behind Trump thru yesterday are now saying they are very upset by his behavior at the press conference today and that they may no longer be able to support him.
Trump being on the losing side has that effect on some. I note that Trump borrowed a page from jamesb and said he was very happy his party lost the midterms and how it will be good for him. Maybe its a NYC thing.
The number of NeverTrumpers may be growing.
One thing is clear based on the results from yesterday– if Democrats had their act together, they could completely wipe out the Trump Party.
Democrats do not have their act together though nationally and thus the game continues..
