UN Amb Nikki Haley steps down….

The question that is going around is WHY?

And why now?

President Trump has accepted Nikki Haley’s resignation as UN Ambassador, according to two sources briefed on their conversation. The timing of her departure is still unclear, the president promised a “big announcement” with her at 10:30 a.m.

What we’re hearing: Haley discussed her resignation with Trump last week when she visited him at the White House, these sources said. Her news shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the Trump administration.

Background: Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, was easily confirmed four days after President Trump’s inauguration in 2017.

She has overseen Trump’s shift in dealing with the UN, including the U.S. exit from the UN Human Rights Council, which Haley called the organization’s “greatest failure.”

Worth noting: Haley wrote a public op-ed in September challenging the N.Y. Times’ anonymous op-ed:

  • “I don’t agree with the president on everything. When there is disagreement, there is a right way and a wrong way to address it. I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person.”
  • “Like my colleagues in the Cabinet and on the National Security Council, I have very open access to the president. He does not shut out his advisers, and he does not demand that everyone agree with him. I can talk to him most any time, and I frequently do.”
  • “If I disagree with something and believe it is important enough to raise with the president, I do it. And he listens.”

  3. Haley has become a dedicated Trump supporter.

    She specifically denied she was running in 2020 and even said she would be supporting Trump for re-election.

    She also described Jared Kushner as a “ hidden genius.”Not sure what’s “hidden” about Jared ,but when one becomes a sycophant for the “Family,” fawning exaggeration knows no limits.

  4. Of course the rumor mill here in S.C. says that Nikki will return to S.C., Lindsay Graham will be appointed either Attorney General or Sec. Of Defense ,and Henry McMaster,presumably elected to his own term next month, appoints her to fill Lindsay’s unexpired term (which ends in 2020).

    • Graham says he’s JUST running for re-election when the time comes…

      The rumor mill thinks Haley does NOT want to run for the Senate…

      Logically?

      I can only see her gambling on something I think COULD be the situation come 2020….

      Donald Trump either politically wounded or NOT even in the White House…

      Something people should remember ….

      As Jack points out she IS a CONSERVERTIVE Republican Woman…

      But also?

      She has spoken only a few times about domestic issues and her foreign affairs speaking is actually Donald Trump’s….

      In 2016 she spoke often and strongly AGAINST Trump….

      In private it is reported she was at odds with Trump on a few more things…

      • I don’t know what is going on, nor do any of us, but perhaps the person who should be most nervous is Mike Pence.

        • at this point in time, with the Evangelicals seemingly held captive, replacing Pence with Haley for 2020 would be a politically smart move.

          • I don’t think Pence has anything to be worried about.

            Trump values loyalty above all else.

            As for the evangelicals being held captive,that can go for the whole Republican Party.

            Replacing VPs has been a favorite parlor game for years.Last time it happened?1944,a scant 74 years ago ,when FDR “reluctantly “replaced Henry Wallace with Harry Truman.Thats like the constant “dream “ of a brokered “ or at least multi ballot convention.

            Are those things theoretically possible?Sure .The odds of either happening?Very remote.

            • Trump is out for himself. I don’t think he cares who is loyal or not. (and remember all the speculation about the NY Times Op-Ed coming from someone in Pence’s office.) We already know Trump thinks Pence is a weird Jesus freak and regularly makes fun of him.

              I can very much believe Jared and Ivanka are telling him that he will win more votes (and “do tremendously with women”) if Haley is on the ticket.

              Bannon is gone to fight against them.

                  Trump told reporters in his office aboard the presidential aircraft that Dina Powell, his former deputy national security adviser, is on the short list….

            • Pence is a good toady.
              Of course so is the vast majority of the Republican Party.
              I don’t expect Trump to ditch Pence, but if he does he’ll easily find another soulless sycophant to kiss his fat orange ass from the VP spot.

            • It actually happened more recently, in 1976, when Gerald Ford chose Robert Dole to be his running-mate over sitting (and appointed) Vice Pres. Nelson Rockefeller. That’s 42 years ago.

              (But Jack’s right about Vice Presidents who win the nomination of a national convention and, once elected, need to win the nomination of the next one.)

              • Yeah I guess the difference is Ford and Rockefeller didn’t run together previously.

                It probably cane closest to happening recently in 1992 when GHW Bush was open to switching out Quayle–from reports I have heard.
                However the ever loyal elder Bush would only do so if Quayle himself suggested it.

                As he never did Bush decided to keep him on the ticket.

                Replacing him with a moderate VP like Colin Powell would likely not have gone over well at the super conservative RNC in Houston that year anyway.

  5. The Charleston newspaper is reporting that Haley’s resignation is due to financial problems, noting that she is over a million dollars in debt and believes she can make some money in the private sector,certainly more than her salary as UN Ambassador which is $180 000.

    And,of course and as usual, here we go with the” anything can happen “ routine and so in that spirit…

  6. Dear God now Trump is floating Ivanka as UN Ambassador.
    Of course the Republican Senate would roll over for daddy’s little girl in a confirmation.

    • As it relates to Jared or Ivanka, the Senate should remember how horrible the last Democrat to be UN Ambassador was. We don’t need another one.
