I’m reminded of what Dr. King said after four little girls were murdered in an Alabama church: “we must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderer.”

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said in a new interview that President Trumpdoes and does not act in a unifying way.
“Sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn’t,” Ryan said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” when asked if the president practiced unifying politics….
Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday rejected the idea that there is a causal link between President Trump‘s rhetoric and violence like Saturday’s shooting or last week’s attempted bombings.
“Everyone has their own style, and frankly, people on both sides of the aisle use strong language about our political differences,” Pence told NBC News Saturday. “But I just don’t think you can connect it to threats or acts of violence.”…

Max Boot: “I am so sad. I am so heartbroken. What is happening to our country?”
“Tolerance for political and religious differences is a non-negotiable part of the social contract in the United States. It is the very core of our national identity, even if it has all too often been honored more in the breach than the observance. We settle our political differences through debate followed by voting. Political terrorism and sectarian bloodletting — these are the sorts of horrors that occur in the Balkans or the Middle East. Not here. Not in the land of the free. We’re better than this. We’re Americans.”
“Except now the horror show has arrived on our shores.”…

Silence…..
First Read: “There is a fundamental divide about our current politics — the overheated and demeaning rhetoric, the inability to compromise, partisanship all the time. While most politicians, Democrats and Republicans, see this as a problem, President Trump sees it as an opportunity. Something to exploit. Something to help turn out his voters.”
“But how can the president participate in finding a solution to the division and hatred when he doesn’t see them as problems — but instead conditions to exploit? And while the president views the criticism of his leadership as an opportunity to showcase himself as a victim to fire up his base, the silence of the rest of the GOP is what’s so loud this time.”
“Compare this moment with the aftermath of Charlottesville. There haven’t been any Republicans who have distanced themselves from Trump. It shows just how much of the GOP’s elected leadership fears the divisive tone Trump has set is actually the KEY to stoking the base for the election.”…
