Observation….
In my latest visit’s to national stores like Home Depot and Target?
Less cashier’s….
More checkout machines….
Surprise?
Nope….
The drive for higher minimum wages was projected to cost jobs….
THAT HAS been the case in big stores. around my way…
My local Home Depot now has 12 checkout machines….
3 manned cashier lines….
My local Target has added 12 checkout machines….
And now has empty manned checkout lines that are minimally staffed….
New York increased the minimum wage to $12 to $13 as of Dec. 31st depending on location and business size….
It appears that payroll costs for most of stores will remain the same even with the hike in wages….
So?
When you hear people talking about how great the economy is right now?
Remember….
It depends where you stand …..
The increases seem to have resulted in less jobs in the places that do the most hiring…
Democratic Socialist Dave says
This kind of comment marks you as a conservative Democrat (or Democratic-leaning independent), rather than some kind of centrist or moderate liberal.
It’s silly for those of us who advocate raising the minimum wage to ignore the side-effects, especially on small businesses that operate on very tight margins, but the overall benefits of raises that stay within reasonable limits have been shown to cancel or outweigh the drawbacks.
I wish that Zreebs were here to argue the economics.

It’s an observation DSD….
I ran a business for 13 years with up to 50+ people….
I paid them well above the min wage for the hourly workers….
But I DID have concerns about payroll cost’s….
Payroll IS the largest cost for just about ANY business or organization…
No matter what I felt as a moderate Democrat?
I had to watch those costs…
It would be foolish for Democrats to to NOT be aware of the consequences of further wage increases….
They affect those who have lost their jobs due automation….
I was the one who had to manage costs….
This applies to my feels about Sanders…
While programs to help those not as fortunate ARE needed…
Cost HAS TO BE a factor in actually creating those programs…
Middle Class people like myself bear the burden of paying the tax base in this country….
Not the poor…
Not the rich…
I KNOW that raising the min wage OVERALL is a benefit for those who keep their jobs in the same national retail stores I named…
But I also feel for those laid off….
They either have to find another job?
Or get jobless benefits that I pay for with my taxes….
The issue is NOT so easy as you point out….
It depends on where you stand…
Zreebs is always free to express his views here…
He just has to learn to deal with other views…
(Several right leaners that commented here couldn’t and left also)
THAT is what this place is about….
jamesb says
The problem with the nations economy right now is actaully the same issue….
The bean counters are singing from the rooftops that the economy is GREAT!….
Yet there is Little wage increase for workers….
There is a new tax law that is giving operations and the rich $$$$$$$$….
Yet there is little wage increase….
Great economy MONEY don’t trickle down, eh?
My Name Is Jack says
You will not see any Democratic candidates for President, including your favorite,Joe Biden, oppose minimum wage increases.
jamesb says
Ok Jack….
I’m just saying that the action creates less jobs for large national chains that move to automation and saddles smaller businesses with increased costs….
And of course it IS a good thing for those who get the increased pay….
But the trend to cut payroll costs will continue…
I’m not the only one who see’s this while shopping….
My Name Is Jack says
Go argue with them.
What you are referring to would happen anyway. The minimum wage has nothing to do with it.
My Name Is Jack says
This is nothing more than a typical Republican argument.
Pretty soon we can expect to see you join in with the Republican argument that we have to cut taxes for the wealthy to “increase” investment and “create” jobs.
jamesb says
Maybe….
But why don’t you find 5 Democrats that own small businesses and ask them about how they feel about the subject?
jamesb says
If you want walk to to the tax cut thing that’s fine also….
I do NOT see last years ‘hail Mary’ tax cut as anything BUT a give away to the rich and corporations…
I see NO benefit except a stealing form the poor and middle class to enrich the RICH….
I have said so here repeatedly….
So your comment is without merit and simply a diversion….
You and I KNOW I am a Democrat…And believe in the mainstream pillar’s of Democratic policy…
That does NOT mean that I shouldn’t question something that sounds good to some, but may backfire in the long run….
My Name Is Jack says
My point is simple and fairly well known…
I live in SC where the minimum wage remains at seven and change and automation is moving ahead apace as it has for years and will continue to..What planet do you live on?
Your blaming the minimum wage for this is rubbish and is nothing more than another excuse for your monotonous attacks on “lefties.”
The problem for you is that hiking the minimum wage is a pillar of the Democratic Party at all levels ,not just among “lefties.”
I don’t give a damn what you call yourself. You act as if your argument is something new.The reality of course is that such has been a typical Republican argument for years as everyone well knows.
jamesb says
So Jack?
Down your way the companies are gonna make a BIGGER KILLING on payroll and not even pass on wage benefits?
And you are throwing at me ?…(right on time)
Wow!
My Name Is Jack says
Of all your dumb “ comebacks”
That’s the dumbest.
jamesb says
But on point
U aretling me that companies in SC squeezing out low paid employees with machines thus
Making even making things even WORST…
At least up here they workers staying get a raise…
And you don’t get my point…
Democrats can run on the min wage hike around ur way..
but whatchance do they have!???
The whole issue is local
But where are?
I assume it isn’t even THAT?
My Name Is Jack says
Incomprehensible gibberish.
jamesb says
Ok Jack…..
I don’t think you’re gonna agree with me on this
jamesb says
None of the state minimum wages provide a family living wage
….The big picture: Most states have enacted minimum wages exceeding the federal $7.25-an-hour rate that’s been in place for nine years. But there is a wide range of hourly rates and working conditions, and none of the state minimums provides a living wage for a family, says Oxfam in a new national study.
The background: Since the 1980s, the U.S, the U.K. and some other developed countries have largely stopped treating labor as an economic policy priority, focusing instead on corporate profit….
jamesb says
No argument….
I agree no Democrat is gonna bring up the point I make as a common sense observation….
And Oacasio-Cortez/Sanders types will push it….
The only ones that would question it would be in red states maybe…
I’m just posting something I see and know from my experience….
