Water rescues are going on….
The storm is a Category 1 with winds @ 90mph…..
Hurricane Florence lumbered ashore in North Carolina with howling 90 mph winds and terrifying storm surge early Friday, ripping apart buildings and knocking out power to a half-million homes and businesses as it settled in for what could be a long and extraordinarily destructive drenching.
“A storm surge of 10 feet above normal levels was reported by the National Weather Service office in Morehead City, North Carolina,” reported the National Hurricane Center, citing the state’s transportation officials.
More than 60 people had to be pulled from a collapsing motel at the height of the storm, and many more who defied evacuation orders were hoping to be rescued. Pieces of ripped-apart buildings flew through the air.
More ominously, forecasters said the onslaught would last for hours and hours because Florence was barely creeping along at 6 mph (9 kph) and still drawing energy from the ocean.
There were no immediate reports of any deaths.
Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m. at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington, not far from the South Carolina line, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline.
Its storm surge and the prospect of 1 to 3 feet of rain were considered an even bigger threat than its winds, which dropped way down from a terrifying 140 mph — Category 4 — earlier in the week. Forecasters said catastrophic freshwater flooding is expected well inland over the next few days as Florence crawls across the Carolinas…..

Even in Rhode Island, people are being warned away from the beaches because of huge expected storm surges.
But our local forecasters don¦t expect the full after-effects to hit Southern New England until next week (say, Tuesday).

Update 9/14/18….11:00PM
Blowing ashore with howling 90 mph winds, Hurricane Florence splintered buildings, trapped hundreds of people and swamped entire communities along the Carolina coast Friday in what could be just the opening act in a watery, two-part, slow-motion disaster. At least five people were killed, according to The Charlotte Observer and other local reports.
Forecasters warned that drenching rains of anywhere from 1 to 3½ feet as the storm crawls westward across North and South Carolina could trigger epic flooding well inland over the next few days.
As 400-mile-wide Florence pounded away at the coast with torrential downpours and surging seas, rescue crews used boats to reach scores of people besieged by rising waters along a river. More than 60 others had to be rescued as a cinderblock motel collapsed….

Update Sunday midday ….
“Epic” amounts of rain are expected to continue to deluge North Carolina on Sunday, downing trees and causing rivers to overflow in areas already inundated by Florence.
The monster storm was downgraded to a tropical depression early Sunday, but experts said this was still “a catastrophic, life-threatening storm.” Fourteen people are believed to have died in the storm.
“It has already dumped 20 to 30 inches of rain on parts of the Carolinas with more to come,” said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Center’s Weather Prediction Center. “And many of the rivers will see prolonged flooding.”
Already more than two feet of rain has fallen in places and forecasters warned there could be an additional 1 1/2 feet before Sunday is out, as the chance of thunderstorms and tornadoes increased.
Authorities called the amount of flooding “historic and unprecedented.”
Michael Sprayberry, the director of the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management, told ABC’s “This Week” that Florence was “one for the record books.”….
