Donald Trump has pointed to Congress to act on immigration….
He’s right….
If it takes him being heartless about dealing with families?
Maybe they WILL get off their asses and do something….
I’m not giving Trump a pass….
His Attorney General ‘s zero-tolerance policy for border illegals IS the reason for this mess….
Zero-Tolerance on anything never works….
It isn’t human….
The images of kids without their parents….
With border cops as prison guards are MORE powerful than the Trump effort to use immigartion as rally point for his base….
As the media piles on this and takes it home to America?
Donald Trump walks stupidly into something that could be a defining ‘Katrina’ like moment for himself , America and his political party….
Will that party extract itself and it’s leader froma place America shouldn’t be?
Senate Republicans are racing to come up with a solution to stop the separation of parents from their children on the border with Mexico.
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas is working to come up with a legislative fix for the Trump administration’s practice of splitting up families that cross the border illegally. Cornyn is leading a small group of Senate Republicans who recognize that Congress may have to step in and do something if President Donald Trump won’t back down.
“You can keep families intact and enforce the law,” Cornyn said. “The solution is up to us, and if Democrats don’t want to work with us to solve the problem, shame on them. But we think we can come up with a reasonable way to solve the problem of family separation that is humane and compassionate.”
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) separately plans to introduce a bill that would add 375 more federal immigration judges, allow more family shelters, mandate that families be kept together if there’s no threat of harm to children, and encourage resolving asylum cases within two weeks. It does not appear to have support from GOP leaders.
“All Americans are rightly horrified by the images we are seeing on the news, children in tears pulled away from their mothers and fathers,” Cruz said. “This must stop. Now. We can fix this.”…..
The administration has careened from one controversy to another, yet the president has seen his approval numbers edge up close to their high-point of late.
But some observers wonder if this issue could cause him deep damage because of its emotional resonance.
The possibility of it rising to the level of President George W. Bush’s disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 seems increasingly plausible.
“I think it’s bad,” said Peter Wehner, who has served in the administration of several past Republican presidents, including Bush, but is a Trump critic. “It seems to me to be an issue that is breaking through. They [the White House] seem panicked and they are operating in such an inept and dishonest way.”
The shifting rationales within the administration have deepened the political perils associated with a policy that Laura Bush called “immoral” and “cruel” in a Washington Post op-ed.
Politically, it is also disconcerting Republicans who, a week ago, were hoping to fight a midterm campaign on a strong economy, tax cuts and deregulation. They now face questions about whether they support ripping children and mothers apart.
Trump has sought to blame the Democrats for the situation, an assertion for which there is no real evidence. The separations are a consequence of the administration’s decision to impose a “zero tolerance” approach on people suspected of crossing the border illegally.
If adults are detained and prosecuted, children cannot be thrown into jail along with them. But, in effect, that results in the separation of parents from children — a step at which previous administrations have balked precisely because of its humanitarian and political challenges….
Erick Erickson….
The United States government should only separate kids from adults for the purpose of ascertaining the relationship between the children and adults. Once that relationship is ascertained, the children with their actual parents should be placed with their parents. I continue to believe it is immoral to do otherwise. But it is also immoral to know some of the kids are victims and do nothing to help them…
Note…
Trump meets today with his party lawmakers to discuss immigration…
jamesb says
Update……
This effort seems to have fallen apart already
jamesb says
There seems to be right leaning bill, a left leaning bill and no real bipartisan bill….
Trump still wants his wall money as a condition for his signature….
Some want a stand alone bill outlawing the separation of families…but GOPer’s added then that the kids, who must be released in the country now, to stay with detained parents for months…
The whole thing is a fucking mess that may not actually change at all …
Trump , with Miller and anti-migration types are holding out for a law that would cut legal immigration policy that has been in effect for decades….
It remains to be seen if Any solution can be found….chances are NOT good
Haven’t been for decades, yea…
