The media focus will be on a GOP primary race in New York’s Staten Island, where Michael Grim, a former FBI agent and Congressman, who went to jail for tax problems is facing a Trump backed incumbent …..
There will be important primaries or runoff elections on Tuesday in seven states, including New York, where establishment candidates in both parties face tests in colorful, close primary battles.
A former congressman on Staten Island will try to regain his seat, hoping Republican voters look past his criminal record as a tax evader. On the Democratic side, challenges to incumbents have revealed tensions between party leaders backing entrenched candidates and new candidates who represent an infusion of activism in the party.
Voters will also go to the polls in Utah, Maryland, Colorado, Oklahoma, Mississippi and South Carolina.
They will be winnowing down the field of candidates from both parties who will face off in the midterm elections on Nov. 6. Here are a few things to watch for….
Note…
There are primaries in NY, Maryland , Utah, Colorado and Oklahoma….There are runoffs in South Carolina and Mississippi …..

The major story tonight is in New York City, but on the Democrat side.
It looks like longtime Congressman Joe Crowely, the Chairman of the Democrat Caucus, has been unseated by a largely unknown 28 year old opponent who argued the incumbent was insufficiently liberal. This is shades of what happened to Eric Cantor in Virginia a few years back.
The demands for ideological purity is real on both sides of the aisle.

Crowley*
And so much for his wish to be Speaker next year.
CG says
The candidate who has seemingly defeated Crowley is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She has called for “the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Medicare for All, tuition-free public college, a federal jobs guarantee.”
Crowley had been on record largely laughing off her challenge, saying the Hispanic voters in his district knew him and trusted him.
CG says
Per CNN (“the most Trusted Name in News”) , Ocasio-Cortez is an avowed Democratic Socialist.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Per my latest copy of Democratic Left, published by Democratic Socialists of America (Vol. XLVI, No. 1, Summer 2018, pp. 7-8),
“New York City DSA has endorsed Alexandri Ocasio-Cortez in her campaign to be the Democratic candidate to the U.S. house of Representatives in New York’s 14th congressional district. Ocasio-Cortez is a working-class, Latina democratic socialist running on a platform of Medicate for All, a universal jobs guarantee, tuition-free public college, and abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. …
“New York City has also endorsed DSA member Julia Salazar in her bid for the New York State Senate. She is running in Brooklyn’s 18th district, which includes Bushwick, Williamsburg, and other neighborhoods in North Brooklyn , against a developer-backed incumbent. …”

DSD?
So she just has the endorsement?

CG’s description of Congressman Brar as an “idealogical purist” who defeated Eric Sleazeball Cantor is very different than my recollection.
I recall Brat as running a conservative populist campaign (Eric Cantor described him as liberal) and I personally cheered his win over Cantor. While I don’t agree with Brat on too many issues, I still largely respect him for at least some consistency on issues like the budget deficit – in which unlike most Republicans, he genuinely cares about it.
I am not a big fan of political labels. I am a big fan of Joe Manchin and Elizabeth Warren at the same time, and I had a strong preference of Brat over Cantor. You guys might see me as inconsistent. But I admire Manchin’s work as West Virginia governor on opening up the state to workers compensation privatization. I admire Brat for his understanding of economic principles and I simultaneously admire Elizabeth Warren for her concerns about economic justice. Maybe it would be healthy for people like CG and James to stop seeing battles as ideological purity and instead recognize as one commentator here inartfully describes as “people can be more than one thing”. Go Warren. Go Manchin. Go Brat – at least on some things.

“Romney beats Kennedy”
Words that deserved to have been spoken 24 years ago
CG says
This was not as good of a night for Mitt Romney’s nephew however. He is running at the back of the pack in the Republican primary for Colorado Governor.
The winner of the GOP nomination for Colorado Governor is Walker Stapleton, a cousin of the Bush Family.
CG says
I watched Mitt Romney give a victory speech, followed by the playing of Brooks & Dunn’s “Only In America” and I lament what could have been…
The Cubs are also losing again, so maybe I have gone back in time to another year..
CG says
In his speech, Romney spoke about how America is “great” because it is good and how values and character and leaders setting the right example are a part of that. Hopefully, he will never stop reminding us.

Romney reportedly wants to be the anti-Trump…..
We’ll see how long THAT lasts….

Ooh a speech. That’ll sure show Trump while he votes with him 90% of the time.

A speech that was “focus group tested” for sure. Mitt’s back, perhaps Hillary should run for Attorney General of New York, we can start a write-in campaign.
A 71 year old freshman Senator, and I know Mormons usually live forever. But, really? But hey, who am I to say he should simply go away. The
The flip flopper returns with visions of the Presidency still dancing in too slicked back head. Only he can never beat Trump.
Scott is right, like all Republicans in Congress he will vote with his “Dear Leader” on all the big issues, while continuing to clutch his pearls in horror over some of the more egregious things this Administration does.
George Will is right, the only way to fight Trump is by voting for Democrats.
My Name Is Jack says
Poor CG….
Destined to be disappointed again.
If Romney really means all that boilerplate rhetoric, let him begin by denouncing the Republican Party Leader for his hateful, divisive daily slanders and lies.
Until he does that ?Nothing but another hypocritical Republican.
My Name Is Jack says
What will be interesting will be seeing how CG responds when Senator Romney quietly allows the “scums”(his description of the Republican Party Leader) outrages to go unanswered and,of course, votes with the rest of the Republican Senators in lockstep with their Leader.
Either we will see the word “disappointed” reappear or we will begin to notice an increasing acceptance by CG of the new Trump Republican Party .
Keith says
I think he is already there Jack. He defends, usually using the National Review as his reference source (folks who also portray themselves as never Trumpers, but who turn themselves into pretzels trying to defend him by attacking his Democratic opponents).
To paraphrase John Sununu, when are the Republicans going to start acting like patriotic Americans??
