Of course there is a ‘catch’…
The House is supposed to vote on a broad immigration bill protecting so-called Dreamers on Thursday that also contains language to end family separations, but that legislation is expected to fail.
At that point, Congress will be under immense pressure to pass a standalone measure providing a fix for family separations. A number of lawmakers in both parties have introduced — or are planning — bills on the subject, including Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas.).
The measure from [Freedom Caucus leader ] Meadows, however, would provide a more conservative solution to the issue. Not only would it raise asylum thresholds in an attempt to crack down an “asylum fraud,” but the bill also would treat unaccompanied minors from Mexico the same as minors from other countries that don’t border the U.S., among other things.
“U.S. border officials need better tools to control the system, keep out violent criminals, and identify those who may be seeking to illegitimately take advantage of our asylum laws,” Meadows said. “By cutting down on asylum fraud, we can keep families together without running a greater risk of traffickers or violent criminals using children to take advantage of the rules.”

Mass Trials at the border…..
None of the defendants took the opportunity to personally ask the judge for leniency, or to explain their actions. But one woman rose to ask about her five-year-old daughter. If I am deported, she asked the judge, what will happen to her?
[Magistrate Judge J. Scott ] Hacker has heard this question many times before. One of his colleagues, Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby, said last week that he was considering an order against CBP’s process of family separation, which could come as soon as this week.
But Hacker had no assurances to provide the defendants he was about to sentence. “Unfortunately, I’m not an immigration attorney,” he said. “Hopefully, they have procedures in place that will marry you up with your daughter.”
When another defendant soon asked about her children, Hacker let out a deep sigh. “Well,” he said, “I have no authority in the immigration realm in this country.”
A few minutes later, the hearing was over, and the last of these newly sentenced immigrants shuffled out of the courtroom and down to the waiting buses below.

Update….
I am more sure that a ‘deal’ on immigration probably is NOT get done..
Because of the rightwingnuts ?
The Senate GOPer’s are talking about KEEPING THE ZERO-TOLERNCE thing and keeping the parents WITH the kids for the entire process which could mean longer term interment camps…
REALLY?
The whole damn thing has gone crazy like Trump….
And people are STILL keep coming
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Trump, Steve Bannon and Steve Miller, according to Tuesday’s New York Times, think that immigration, response to the National Anthem and other highly-charged, divisive issues are the key to winning this November, while most of the Republicans candidates actually trying to win or hold those seats (especially in the suburbs) see them as net vote-losers and want instead to run on apparent prosperity, popular parts of the tax bill, low unemployment, and what they see as a secure peaceful world (no more wars, at least yet).
jamesb says
Yup….
We’ll see if the parties lawmakers wnat to follow Miller or themselves….

So much for this….

I guess the Dem’s WILL follow Pelosi, eh?
jamesb says
This was the conservative bill….
Even some GOP’s didn’t go for it….
jamesb says
Ryan now says he will try for a vote on a compromise immigration bill that I believe Democrats WILL vote on..
That bill will offer up to $25B to placade Trump…
Keith says
Really James? Do you think that the Republicans will actually pass immigration reform?
But, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Melania, the immigrant first lady, went to visit the children (or pretend to visit them) wearing a jacket that said, ” I really don’t care, do U?”
Putting aside that we hear faux outrage here about what Samantha Bee might say, and I think she should have dropped the descriptor “feckless,” or about the stupid thing Peter Fonda tweeted, we need to examine what Melania purposely did today. She wore an off the rack jacket in hear over 90 degrees that had the words printed on the back, “I really don’t care, do U?”
That could be the new motto of the Republican Party right? I really don’t care as long as I am in charge. That seems to work for them right?
We heard how the Republicans will oppose Trump on his policies on this and other issues, but, they cannot even pass an immigration reform bill.
When are the “Republicans” on this blog finally admit that their Party has gone full frontal racist? I don’t expect it anytime soon, they are in denial, and would have to admit that they are racist too.
jamesb says
I have said here several times that I do NOT think Congress can pass anything on immigration…
REALLY….
Melania making the trip makes sense to me due to own personal life story….
I did indicate that having a President’s wife stopping in for a visit means you put your best foot forward…
The issue has bedeviled leaders of BOTH parties and their lawmakers….
It is worst now because Trump does NOT know WTF he doing…All he wants is a wall…His guy Miller seems to be person that keeps whispering in his ear….
The race card era thing is always in the background…
But some GOPer’s ARE trying to find a middle ground…
Some isn’t enough it seems…
Oh, and the situation in America is actually much calmer than in some places in Europe
Keith says
The comment above is what we usually get on any topic of importance when our host is trying to excuse, in his own way, the inaction of the majority.
Fact, there is a compromise bill waiting to move on the Floor of the House with the sponsorship of the entire Democratic Caucus. They can’t even find the twenty plus Republicans to sign on to move the bill.
James tells us that there are some Republicans who support immigration reform. Name them James. And, if their names aren’t Ryan or McConnell it’s meaningless.
You should really have taken that class James.
I am off to help plan a fundraiser for my man Harley in SoCal, it appears, at the moment, that he will be the Democratic nominee to take on Putin’s favorite Congressman. The official certification should come shortly. Remember, “math is math” and how the Democrats were going to be frozen out of some of those new swing districts in Orange County. I will keep you all posted on our progress.
CG says
Oh great, I actually want Rohrabacher to lose and if Keith is being honest that he is involved in the Democrat’s campaign, that’s bad news, as Keith seems to be on the losing side of everything.
From what he said, instead of getting Democrats to vote for Hillary in Ohio in the fall of 2016, he spent his time fighting with Republican voters door to door, and probably generated dozens of votes for Trump in the process.
Somebody better warn Harley….
scott says
Keith also worked to elect Obama twice. When did you ever travel to work for a Republican candidate CG?
CG says
He wouldn’t have exactly been a big-shot in that campaign. I have travelled to help Republican candidates within the general areas where I was living, and have attended conventions, meetings, and events throughout Illinois over the years. People tend to be most receptive when they are approached by a “neighbor.” I’ve certainly logged many hours on the phone on behalf of Republican candidates with people across the country.
jamesb says
There is no doubt that Keith has been a good solider for Democrats ….
He seems to volunteer to help those who NEED the extra hand he and others bring….
He gets props from me for his involvement ….
CG says
Oh, the irony….
