Open Primaries , also known as ‘Jungle Primaries’ have strung up in some places….
It was seen as a ‘reform’ thing….
It may come back to bite the Democrats in the ass in California…..
Then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) hailed the initiative’s passage as a vehicle that would change the political complexion of the state legislature and the congressional delegation. He and other proponents claimed that it would lead to the nomination and ultimately the election of candidates who were more moderate — center-left and center-right, rather than far left and far right.
“We in California have said we’ve got to come to the center, we’ve got to bring everyone together in order to solve problems,” Schwarzenegger said at the time. “And I think the rest of the nation eventually will find out this is exactly where the action is.”
The action Schwarzenegger envisioned hasn’t come to pass. Instead, the reforms have produced action of a different sort. Days ahead of Tuesday’s big round of primaries, the unintended consequences — though not necessarily unforeseen possibilities — of the open primary system are roiling the state’s politics. The system’s promises, meanwhile, remain mostly unfulfilled.
Most of the hand-wringing today is among Democrats. Their worries are a byproduct of their good fortune — the energy and enthusiasm that exists at the grass roots. Given Democratic opposition to President Trump, which is particularly strong in California, and the number of Republican-held seats that are competitive, this year’s elections have drawn bigger-than-normal fields of candidates.
In California, that’s a potential problem for Democrats. As Nate Persily, a Stanford University political scientist, put it: “This is not a system prepared for that.”….

The Hill on tomorrow’s California Primaries…..
The House majority could be in the balance Tuesday when California voters head to the polls to pick nominees in some of the most consequential races up for grabs this year.
Their verdicts will offer early clues about the advantage Democrats hold heading into the midterms, and whether Republicans can mitigate some of the damage by focusing on key issues….

Roll Call on California Primaries….
California operatives say there has been more focus on House races in Orange County this cycle than at any other time they can remember. For the first time, both parties’ House campaign committees have offices in the county. And they’re in the same city.
Across the highway from John Wayne Airport in Irvine, the National Republican Congressional Committee leased 10,000 square feet of office space. Inside, campaign signs for local GOP members of Congress hang on the walls, and red tablecloths cover the phone bank stations (along with some pocket Constitutions)…..

Any insights Keith?
Keith says
I waited until I was sure that the Democrats had candidates in all the GOP districts that are vulnerable here (especially those in Orange County) and it looks like we will accomplish that goal. In fact, the Democratic turnout in Issa’s District (49) is very strong and the Democrats in Dana Rohrabacher’s district (48) are currently running two and three behind him at 30% (my guy Harley just moved into second place). And, the ethically challenged Duncan Hunter in District 50 (one of the dumbest men in Congress) is being held under 50% in his very Republican area.
So no shutout in any of the competitive districts here and all the pearl clutching I heard on television this evening went for naught.
The U.S. Senate race will be an all Democratic affair (it will be interesting to see what the Republicans do in that race), and so will our race for Lieutenant Governor, but Trump endorsed and perennial candidate John Cox will be the Republican candidate for Governor. Clearly he will run the standard anti-tax campaign with a lot of anti-immigration rhetoric thrown in. I think he will find his message won’t sell here. Gavin got exactly what he wanted, he clearly did not want to run against another Democrat in November and spent significant money to actually promote Cox by attacking him in the LA media market (a smart political move). I am sure they are already planning his race for President tonight.
We have at least seven House GOP seats that will be in play here in November (with an actual pick-up of four as far as I can see). So, it was a good night for California. It also looks like the open seats in New Jersey had strong Democratic turnouts. So overall Nancy Pelosi should be very pleased.

Whomever finishes in second place tonight to Putin apologist Dana Rohrabacher deserves to defeat him in November, be they a D or R, but I am really hoping it might be the other Republican, and as of this moment, that looks like a strong possibility.
If the matchup is Rohrabacher facing a Republican, Rohrabacher is more likely to be gone in the general than against a Democrat. That party will have to do the right thing and vote for the other Republican, right?
