Somebody HAS to do the agencies basis mission….
Ya can’t just open the doors to anybody showing up in your block from Anywhere..
Democrats have to be careful that the issue could turn on them and plays to Trump’s projection of strength in the general terms , the fear of open borders and perception in places Democrats need to pick up votes from those who can’t vote…
Solutions?
Policy changes at the agency….
A human side will go far for them…
Even a name change and revision back to policy of looking for people with violence or JUST serious criminal history….
But the calls for just abolishing the agency and functions may sound good…
But is too far a push for Democrats….
And plays into the hands of Republicans…
Celinda Lake, longtime Democratic pollster, told Axios: “I worry that abolishing ICE tips the issues from humane treatment to security. The Republicans are already trying to move the issue in that direction.”
- Lake added: “Voters believe we need some enforcement of border security — not just for immigration, but for security. I wish we were pushing this to: ‘We need comprehensive immigration reform.'”
Republicans are rejoicing at the notion of a new litmus test for Democrats, especially ones who have presidential ambitions in 2020.
- Alex Castellanos, longtime adviser to top Republicans, said Dems are making the mistake his own party made after losing to Barack Obama: “[W]e became so weak, marginalizing ourselves to such an extreme, that an outsider business guy who had never run for office before, extinguished us all.”
- “That’s the danger for the Dems now. They are marginalizing themselves as they race against each other to win the gold medal for anti-Trump extremism. If they are not careful, some Silicon Valley billionaire, outsider — probably a woman — could clean all their clocks and steal their party right out from under them.”
Where the debate is going … A well-known Democratic strategist told Axios: “‘Abolish’ alone could be a political disaster, akin to Trump’s gutting the [Affordable Care Act] is for Republicans. … It suggests that Dem concern for undocumented immigrants goes beyond compassion andinto irresponsibility.”…
Democratic Socialist Dave says
There are many things that could be reformed and rearranged in Homeland Security, especially the parts dealing with migration, customs and the border.
But Abolish ICE is just too simple-minded a slogan: it offers no clue as to what if anything is being suggested to replace it, unless it’s completely open borders (an interesting theoretical possibility with solid 19th-century liberal roots, but something that is just not sellable in anything like today’s political environment).
The sooner this slogan dies, the better for Democrats and progressives.
jamesb says
It may NOT…..
SOMEBODY HAS TO bring some sense to this from within the Democratic party….
It could be a political trap door that the Democrats could walk thru on their own…
Zreebs says
I agree with Dave
jamesb says
Well then Z?
That makes 3 of us here that agree that get rid of ICE thing could hurt Democrats
Keith2018 says
Who are the Democrats that want to “abolish” ICE?
How many, and how do they want to do it?
Reorganization or elimination?
This is much ado.
Zreebs says
Few, if any, Conressional Democratic legislators want to eliminate all of its responsibilities. So the slogan “Abolish ICE” is not helpful.
jamesb says
No Keith the get rid of ICE thing is NOT much to do about nothing….
The emdia has caught this since the Crowley lost….
Gillibrand is on to it and please check the linked Axios piece which DOES list who has jumped on the band wagon….
You might want to check out this link Keith….
It’s the lefties again….
Keith2018 says
A list? Four people tops, and they seem to say “fix it.”
Work on your reading comprehension James. You just bought into the Republican talking points.
jamesb says
Fix it is NOT get rid of it
I read fine
Zreebs says
james Either didn’t read what Gillebrand said in its entirety, he didn’t understand what she said or he is lying. Perhaps more than one apply.
jamesb says
Gillibrand ORIGINALLY called for the agency to be abolished ….
After pushback?
Has retreated
Keith2018 says
Nope, she immediately said we need to build a better alternative.
jamesb says
Her exact quote…..
…’I believe you should get rid of it, start over, reimagine it and build something that actually works’….
She said get rid of it….
Pushed back?
She adjusted, as I said….
jamesb says
Across the media she was branded as the leader of the get rid of wing of Democrats….
We simply do NOT need this….
As others and I have said, and she adjusted to say?
They DO need a policy and cosmetic change…
jamesb says
Chicago Tribune Op-Ed
The congressional Republican caucuses must be substantially reduced. So substantially that their remnants, reduced to minorities, will be stripped of the Constitution’s Article I powers that they have been too invertebrate to use against the current wielder of Article II powers. They will then have leisure time to wonder why they worked so hard to achieve membership in a legislature whose unexercised muscles have atrophied because of people like them….

THIS IS the answer….
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Sunday downplayed calls from his Democratic colleagues to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Abolishing ICE will accomplish nothing unless we change the Trump policies,” Blumenthal said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
A growing number of Democratic lawmakers, including potential 2020 presidential candidates Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) have come out in support of eliminating ICE and starting from scratch with a new agency.
Blumenthal on Sunday said the Trump administration’s policies are the root cause of inhumane treatment of migrants, and must be addressed first….

Just more mean-spirited attacks from Jsmes on people he hates.
Keith says
When you reorganize an existing federal agency you “get rid” of the existing organization of structure. That what happens James, and you and Corey are all excited by the use of the word “rid.” Really?
Do you know anything about the federal system of government, how the reorganization of an agency is accomplished, or the abolishiment
Keith says
Well this thing posted before I could even finish. This is much ado.
Name all those Democrats who want to abolish ICE for me James.
The criticism from the Senator was spot on. They are separating families.
One other issue. The private contractors who are housing these kids, who are they, and who do they make political contributions to??
jamesb says
I am reporting what she SAID…..
The perception is she wanted the agency gone….
If you go back and read my comments about the agency, which are consistent with what I have always felt about it?
You will find that I have argued that the Secret Service and other parts of the Behemoth agency throw together make NO damn sense…
As Z points out…
I am no fan of the Bluedog Democratic turned left darling junior US Senator….
THAT is because she does NOT front sensible views to me….
I WILL continue to ‘call her out’ like Jack does about me….
jamesb says
And I take her at her word….
She DID say, initially, ‘just get rid of the agency’….
And you KNOW that I KNOW about the how our government works….
jamesb says
There is LITTLE chance any reasonable re-organizatioal political will is out there for changing the DHS , CBP or ICE….
All those parts of the now Trump admin have internal issues eating at them in addition to the outside attacks and media focus….As I pointed out Keith?….Moral within sucks…DHS is ignoring Justice..which is looking to make shit even harder for them….
Yea…
I KNOW WTF I’m talking about…
CG says
Funny, when Republicans spoke of repealing and replacing Obamacare, the people here said it meant that Republicans wanted to take health care away from people.
But this is somehow different?
Under their own standard, they want to end immigration and customs enforcement.
jamesb says
THAT lasted for about ten seconds
CG says
Clearly, Keith is in a panic over this. He has probably been hearing the grumbling about the party’s messaging all weekend at the cocktail parties from the rich, white donors.
If ICE is repealed, what happens in the meantime, before it is replaced? Is the replacement automatic? What are these Democrats suggesting happen in the time between?
jamesb says
Keith is right in the view that getting rid of ICE just osn’t Gonna happen and that Democrats will be focus family sepesrtion and probably what DOJ wants which is family detention camps…..
CG says
If that is truly going to be their focus, Democrats are going to really have to re calibrate their messaging from the past week.
As it is, several members of the Democrat Caucus, such as Rep. Jayapal of Seattle have called for the end of any sort of immigration enforcement. Democrat activists are marching across the country changing, “No ban. No wall. No borders at all.”
The first and second are certainly reasonable points to debate, but the third one equates to political suicide.
jamesb says
Pictures will be ALL they need….
And regencies to theJapense interment camps…
The Republican CANNOT win on this CG
Trump , Miller Nd Sessions are being American Gov and policy st it’s worst….
CG says
A couple of months ago, Congressman Keith Ellison of MN, who remains the #2 official at the DNC, and is now running for Attorney General, marched in a parade wearing a shirt calling for the elimination of borders.
Winning message?
jamesb says
You seen the shirt recently?
CG says
Well, he wore it in May. and that was the chant that was going on at marches and rallies yesterday all across the country.
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that significant portions of the grassroots of your party do not believe in the concept of borders and do not believe that any person should be prevented from entering the U.S. “No person is illegal.”
This will be fought on debate stages and in the media across the country by your party’s field of Presidential candidates.
CG says
The short-term practicality of this is though, how does the nation proceed in eliminating ICE without having a clearly defined replacement ready to go.
Elizabeth Warren says that whatever replaces it should be something that “reflects our values.” A NICE ICE, so to speak. That’s all well and good, but what does it mean?
What happens in the time between ICE going away and the new program taking over? When the new program takes over, will the people find it acceptable to deport or detain anyone at the border?
Democrats overreacted last week and went for the emotional soundbites (after a politically wounded Trump Admin already retreated on a horribly unpopular policy after receiving bipartisan calls to end it) and now they have staked and are inching towards staking themselves to other position that are going to harm them in 2018 and 2020.
jamesb says
Yes indeed….
But I feel like immigration itself?
Not much will get done
Zreebs says
I don’t think anyone would disagree that you can’t get rid of ICE without first replacing it.
Zreebs says
I don’t find the comment “No person is illegal” offensive and I strongly oppose open borders.
Keith Ellison doesn’t speak for me.
Zreebs says
Don’t worry. The Democrats won’t nominate for President anyone who advocates “open borders”. I feel relatively certain of that – although Trump will accuse the candidate of that.
jamesb says
They already ARE shopping THAT around against the Democrats…
jamesb says
Border Patrol arrests at the United States-Mexico border dropped by 16% from May to June, according to data given to AP, ending a four-month streak of increasing arrests…..
Axios….
