Richard Nixon won the popular vote in 1960.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Who says that Richard Nixon won the national popular vote in 1960 ?
Every non-partisan source (and I( think most partisan ones, too) shows JFK winning more votes overall, although some of the returns (e.g. from Illinois) are subject to legitimate questioning.
For example, the 2018 World Almanac (p. 504) shows Kennedy with 34,226,731 votes, which is over 100,000 votes more than Richard Nixon’s 34,108,157.
The Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives reported something very similar:
34,227,096 — Democratic
34,107,646 — Republican
http://history.house.gov/Institution/Election-Statistics/1960election/ (pages 50-52)
However, the legitimate doubts that some have don’t mean that those doubts are absolute and determinative.
It’s like saying that Al Gore won the popular vote in Florida in 2000; I think that it’s at least possible, but years of study have not shown definitively that he did in fact do so. (In fact they seem to show that we’ll never really know.)

In fact insofar as I know the only party (or pre-party caucus) to win more popular votes than any other ticket (if not always an absolute majority) but lose the Presidency are various versions of the Democratic Party:
1824 Andrew Jackosn
1876 Samuel Tilden (over 51% of the national total)
1888 Grover Cleveland
2000 Albert Gore, Jr
2016 Hillary Clinton
Democratic Socialist Dave says
I have to qualify some of what I said about 1960, if only slightly.
A lengthy 30-second search via Bing <whew !) did yield an honest if partisan source whose honesty about the facts most of us respect (if not always his rather original interpretations): Sean Trende of Real Clear Politics.
Did JFK Lose the Popular Vote?
By Sean Trende – October 19, 2012
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2012/10/19/did_jfk_lose_the_popular_vote_115833.html
Following a couple of academic articles plus the underlying official data, Trende postulates that it would be more honest to award the popular-vote total (although not the Electoral Vote) to Nixon because of the peculiar way that Alabama candidates ran for and were elected to be Presidential Electors.
This is muddy for two or three reasons: there were two slates of Democrats for the 11 Electoral seats, one “loyalist” slate pledged to the National Party’s nominee (i.e. JFK) and one unpledged slate (whose elected Electors ended up voting as expected for Sen. Harry Flood Byrd of Virginia). While there were only 11 pledged loyalist Democratic candidates for the 11 spots, the unpledged candidates numbered no fewer than 24. (A similar situation occurred in the 1968 New Hampshire Democratic primary, when Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s supporters 24 candidates for the 24 N.H. seats at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, while candidates backing Pres. Johnson numbered 45,) *
Add this to the fact that each Alabama voter voted not for slates, but for up to 11 indvidual Electoral candidates, and it becomes very hard to determine the best way to count the total Kennedy, Nixon and states’ rights votes in Alabama.
While most political scientists and historians have chosen the method that gives JFK a majority of the total national popular vote, Trende (together with a contemporary 1960 interpretation in the non-partisan Congressional Quarterly) says it’s just as legitimate to choose methods that give the popular presidential vote in Alabama to either Nixon or Byrd (and thus give Nixon a national popular plurality over JFK).
¶ But, again, the plausibility of possible arguments for a Nixon popular plurality is very different from an outright assertion that Nixon did in fact win more popular votes than Kennedy.
* Footnote: See, e.g., The Real Majority, by Richard M. Scammon & Ben J. Wattenberg, (Coward-McCann, New York, 1970), chapter 7, pages 85-87. Saammon and Wattenberg further point out that in the separate presidential preference (or “Beauty Contest”) ballot, 27,520 N.H. Democrats wrote in the name of President Johnson while only 23, 263 voted for the pre-printed line for Eugene McCarthy, which works out to roughly 50% – 42%.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador (“AMLO”), of the populistic National Revival Movement (MORENA) coalition, won a decisive majority of 53 to 54% of the popular vote in Sunday’s Mexican presidential election. Since Mexico’s presidents are limited to one single 6-year term, he will serve from 2019 to 2025.
Both outgoing President Enrique Peña Nieto, (of the historically-dominant Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI) and President-elect López Obrador made very conciliatory speeches, praising civil liberties, peaceful debate, social harmony, a free press and independent institutions such as the Electoral Commission.
In his victory speech, AMLO seemed to go out of his way to reassure Mexicans that he would not follow the path of Venezuela’s Hûgo Chávez, but proceed in a fully lawful, peaceful fashion. In many ways, his speech reflected the style of Barack Obama, with touches of Bernie Sanders. He promised to maintain the independence of the Bank of Mexico and fiscal discipline in the government¹s own budget. He laid particular emphasis on fighting corruption (a long-standing complaint of Mexican citizens). He also promised to increase social justice and equality, with particular mention of indigenous people, sexual minorities and migrants. He offered friendly relations with the United States.

Brazil beats Mexico 2 – 0 at Samara in the World Cup Group of 16 to advance to the quarter-finals on Friday afternoon..
No goals were scored in the first half, but one was scored by Neymar, Jr, in the 51st minute of play and another by Roberto Firmino in the 88th.
Both sides played energetically, aggressively and intelligently on both offence and defence (although without unusual roughness), but Mexico was unable to convert any of her many approaches to Brazil’s goalmouth into points.

Belgium scored a third and winning goal at Rostov-on-Don in the very last minute of stoppage time to avoid extra time, defeat Japan 3 – 2 and advance to a Friday quarter-final battle with Brazil (who beat Mexico this morning).
No goals were scored in a very active but uneventful first half, but Japan showed energy, imagination and daring to score two goals very early in the second half. Belgium eventually equalized and then scored that third goal after the end of regulation time. Both goalkeepers were outstanding. The Fox commentators noted that while Belgium made several strategic (and apparently successful) substitutions, Japan did not.
Needless to say, it was an emotional roller-coaster for the Japanese players and fans, when what had seemed incredibly unlikely suddenly came within grasp and then suddenly slipped away again.
Final two games in the Round of 16 (which will determine who plays in the fourth quarter-final slot) are:
Sweden vs Switzerland at 10 a.m. EDT (9 a.m. CDT/7 a.m. PDT), and
England vs Colombia at 1 p.m. EDT.

England does the unprecedented, beating Colombia 4-3 on penalty kicks after the two teams were tied 1-1 at the end of extra time. England will now play today’s other winner, Sweden, in quarter-finals on Saturday.
In regulation time, Harry Kane scored a penalty kick for England over Colombian goalkeeper Danny Ospina and at the end of regulation, England was ahead 1-0.
But some time after the 75th minute of regulation, Colombia decided it was time to play association football rather than collect pretty yellow and red cards, and managed to score yet another of this tournament’s last-minute goals near the end of stoppage time. No goals were scored in extra time (15 min. x 2), so it went to penalty kicks, which before today had eliminated England in no fewer than three previous World Cups without ever advancing her.

So, “dead man walking” Bruce Rauner wouldn’t, if he lived in the 3rd Congressional District of Illinois, vote for a Democrat over a Nazi.
Haven’t we been having this conversation on-and-off over the last week or so?
Even a Nazi could not get some Republicans to vote for a Democrat. Amazing. Party over Country.
George Will and other former members of the GOP understand that the only way they can get that Party to become truly patriotic again is for them to lose, and really lose, the next election. Only then will they be able to purge themselves of the evil that they, with years of dog whistle politics, have created.

Months ago, Rauner denounced the candidate in IL 3 in uncertain terms and said that nobody should ever vote for him. The issue with Rauner is that he usually avoids giving clear answers on anything and is very stubborn in deliberating dancing around questions. It’s tedious to keep repeating the same history, but
(a) liberal Democrats and what passes for a Democratic establishment in California endorsed (i.e. actively encouraged their sympathizers to vote for) a very conservative Republican, Cong. Clair Burgener, when the Democratic nominee turned out to be Tom Metzger of the American Nazi Party; and
(b) much less unambiguously, Louisiana Republicans (with many misgivings) supported the corrupt incumbent Democratic Governor, Edwin Edwards when his GOP opponent was David Duke of the Ku Klux Klan (as one popular bumper ticker read, “Vote for the Crook/It’s Important”).
So it’s a little surprising that Gov. Rauner can’t do the same in Illinois this year.

Update on Ill. Gov. Rauner…..
Gov. Bruce Rauner on Thursday followed Sen. Ted Cruz’s lead and called for voters in a Chicago-area congressional district to “vote for anybody” but the avowed Nazi running as a Republican.
Rauner made the remarks after declining earlier this week to go as far as Cruz — who had publicly urged Illinois residents to vote for a Democrat, Rep. Dan Lipinski, or write in a candidate, rather than cast a ballot for Holocaust denier Arthur Jones. Jones captured the Republican nomination after running uncontested in the March primary….
CG says
When you look at what everyone actually said, there was actually no difference between what Cruz said and what Rauner said.
Cruz said write someone in or vote for the Democrat. Rauner, who had already said nobody should vote for Jones was only asked about the specific Democrat (who happens to be an ally of Michael Madigan, with whom Rauner has been emerged for years in a blood feud) and said no, while stressing his opposition to the Nazi. So, he was in agreement that voters should write someone in, and seemed to be hanging on to the unrealistic possibility that Republicans will field some sort of official write-in candidate.
Rauner is horrible at answering media questions, but this is much ado about nothing as the media falsely claimed his comments differed from Cruz or that Rauner was in any way saying to vote for the Republican in that district.

It continues to have major problems .Of course you have never understood that the original purpose of the program was to provide competition among health insurers and lower the costs of policies.
That hasn’t happened. In many states only one insurer participates (see S.C.) .Costs have not come down or even stabilized.
Indeed, just this week ,Trumps Administration is refusng to pay insurers the federal supplement for those with pre existing conditions causing another major problem with the program
Your idea that just because it “survives” that it is working as intended is infantile.
There still remain major problems with the program as I stated several years ago and that you have twisted to claim that I said it was “done.”
I retain my view ,as I stated then, that, as time goes on ,it will be less and less recognizable as the original program.
