He’s changed his mind after someone got him ina room and spoken to him….
President Donald Trump on Friday declared that gun owners’ rights are “under siege,” pledging that his administration will work to protect them in an address at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention.
“Thanks to your activism and dedication, you have an administration fighting to protect your Second Amendment, and we will protect your Second Amendment,” Trump told a raucous crowd of NRA members in Dallas, Texas. “Your Second Amendment rights are under siege, but they will never, ever be under siege as long as I’m your president.”
Trump lauded efforts by the organization’s members and leaders to shield gun owners, while again plugging support for some of his most controversial proposals aimed at addressing mass shootings in schools.
“We strongly believe in allowing highly trained teachers to carry concealed weapons, if they’re highly trained,” he said. “And we want highly trained security guards.”
The remarks came just over two months after the president expressed a willingness to “fight” the National Rifle Association to curb gun violence in response to the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
In the aftermath of the attack — which left 17 dead and numerous others injured — the president floated support for a number of measures intended to boost school safety. They included arming teachers, strengthening background checks, raising the age for certain gun purchases, banning the bump stock gun accessory and reopening mental institutions….

Any movement on gun control has come on the state and city level….

I’m surprised no Democrat spoke.
We all know that the NRA is a”nonpartisan “ organization.
If there where Democrats in attendance?
They surely would not want to be the object of attacks, even if they where club members
Some of those Democratic candidates in deep-red states make a big point of their own gun prowess and lifetime N.R.A. memberships.
But does this mean that the non-partisan NRA Institute for Legislative Affairs won’t hear from Democrats ? Not that the non-partisan NRA ILA is supporting one particular political party… 😉
Oddly ,news reports are that during his speech to the nonpartisan NRA,Trump urged the delegates to support Republicans in the midterm elections.
His plea was met by “cheers.”I wonder if all the Democrats there were part of the “cheers?”
Then again Wayne LaPierre, the public face of the NRA(actual title is Executive VP,I believe) has labeled all Democrats as “Socialists” at the CPAC ,an unabashed gathering of Right Wing Republicans.I wonder why he did that?
Joe Manchin– the Democratic Senator with probably the highest NRA rating (unless Heidi Heitkamp holds that honor) speaks far more critical of the organisation than any Republican.
Props to the few states that HAVE DONE something after the Florida HS shootings….

The NRA shot down Joe Manchin’s bipartisan effort with a Republican Senator (I forget whom) to increase background checks very modestly, I think after the shooting at the church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
Pat Toomey of PA is the Republican Senator who teamed with Manchin
Thanks, Scott; hard to get more Tea-Party than Rhode Island’s own Pat Toomey (Little Rhody can also take credit for Seán Spicer and Gen. Michael Flynn) but he wasn’t unreasonable enough for the N.R.A.
