I DO…..
What a wonderful glorus moment…..
The 44th President of the United States….
The first Black/Mixed Race President…..
The acknowledgement that America got past race to make it’s elected leader something America was increasing turning to……
Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States on Tuesday, sweeping away the last racial barrier in American politics with ease as the country chose him as its first black chief executive.
Mr. Obama’s election amounted to a national catharsis — a repudiation of a historically unpopular Republican president and his economic and foreign policies, and an embrace of Mr. Obama’s call for a change in the direction and the tone of the country. But it was just as much a strikingly symbolic moment in the evolution of the nation’s fraught racial history, a breakthrough that would have seemed unthinkable just two years ago.
Mr. Obama, 47, a first-term Democratic senator from Illinois, defeated Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, a former prisoner of war who was making his second bid for the presidency.
Mr. McCain offered a gracious concession speech at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix shortly after 11:15 p.m. Eastern time, quieting his booing supporters more than once when he mentioned Mr. Obama’s name. “Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself, and for his country,” he said, adding that he was sorry that Mr. Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him during his teenage years, had not lived to see the day; she died on Sunday.
“These are difficult times for our country, and I pledged to him tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face,” Mr. McCain said. “I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our goodwill and earnest effort to find ways to come together.”
To the very end, Mr. McCain’s campaign was eclipsed by an opponent who was nothing short of a phenomenon, drawing huge crowds epitomized by the tens of thousands of people who turned out to hear Mr. Obama’s victory speech in Grant Park in Chicago.
Mr. McCain also fought the headwinds of a relentlessly hostile political environment, weighted down with the baggage left to him by President Bush and an economic collapse that took place in the middle of the general election campaign.
The day shimmered with history as voters began lining up before dark — hours before polls opened — to take part in the culmination of a campaign that, over the course of two years, commanded an extraordinary amount of attention from the American public…..
But…
For the second Barack Hussien Obama won?
Something was to begin to fester…..
A fear was cast into those who where NOT the color’s of the rainbow….
Those who moved away from raising numbers of Americans who where NOT of same color as the man who would be their President for eight years…
Those who where afraid of a new America that was marching along in the early years of the 21st Century….
Standing in the shawdows as those who had be ostacized, discriminated against, hunted down, and related to second class citizenship cheered and celebrated?
They hunkered down and began to plot their take back of the country….
They would work hard to put their thumb on ANYTHING that had President Obama’s fingerprints on it….
They would fight a healthcare program that would benefit the very poor whites that where scared of the new black leader that wanted to help ALL Americans, not just ones of color…
They would oppose a President Obama that would spend much of his moments on the job fighting to help America and the world gain economic health after a possible economic disaster…
He would bring the troops home…
He would make America Great agin in the eyes of the World….
But No….
The elction and re-election of Barack Hussein Obama would plant the seeds of the election of rich white Real Estate guy form New York City….(Trump STILL can’t get over the bigger crowds for Obama)
A guy who would conquer and adopt a political parties supporters willingly and it’s leadership begrudgingly in order that they take America back…..
Nevermind that Donald J. Trump was a huckster that is secretive….
Nevermind that he is making money off the America public while being office….
Nevermind that he started of and continues to distain advice form those who have knowledge of how government and foreign affairs work….
The guy operates in his own Alternate Reality….
President Barack Obama read to a certain portion of white America as an unending attack on white Christian identity, centrality and cultural relevance. In their minds, he was seeking to end their right to bear arms and the right of conservatives to speak freely.
For this group of Americans, Trump has been the corrective. As Ta-Nehisi Coates points out in his brilliant Atlantic essay, “The First White President,” for Trump’s supporters, his election was itself the point. Putting a human wrecking ball against political correctness, feminism, multiculturalism and even decency was the ballgame…..
Poll after poll reflect American’s support for President Obama and his times in office….
If he could run again?
He’d leave Donald Trump in his rea view mirror….
Those who voted for the guy who they felt would take America back?
Day by day get screwed by his choas, policy and the emeging knowledge that the guy can’t hold candle to the times of Obama, a President who wasn’t perfect, but was miles better that what we have now…..

New Open Thread is HERE….
CG says
The gist of james’ commentary here seems to be that any and all opposition to the election or policies of Barack Obama were motivated by racial prejudice. If that is actually what is being inferred, I find it an un-American preposterous viewpoint and the manifestation of one of the reasons why Trump won.
But perhaps james’ views can be clarified, as he often tries to do.
jamesb says
There are SEVERAL mentions of economic focus…
jamesb says
But YES….
I believe that MOST of the fear of non-college educted whites was racial….
Not just anti-black….
But anti-hispanic and certainly anti- Arab/Muslum…..
These people where gonna take their jobs, move next door, marry their daughter or son, speak an different language….
The whole nine years….
CG?
Do you HONESTLY believe THAT isn’t part of the support for Trump and what he and his admin has embarcked up for the last year and a half?
Furthermore I DO point out that Trump and his GOP buddies are actually screwing the same people they have co-opped!….
Red States ARE adopting Obamacare benefits….
Poor while people have come to support Obamacare…
I JUST did a post on how Trump immigration policy enforcement is actually hurting the same companies owned by white GOP supporters in manufacturing and agriculture….
That guy screws up just about everthing he touches!….
CG says
You are talking about different things, but you seem perfectly open to cast aspersions on people who think or behave different than you. I do not think that is a good trait
As you know, I opposed the election of Donald Trump and oppose many of his policies. I also opposed the election and many policies of Barack Obama, as a white, college-educated, religious minority.
Any inference that I opposed Obama out of prejudice is something that is beyond unacceptable and that should naturally apply to anyone who felt the same way about that Administration and policies as I do.
If possible, you should learn how to be a better writer and more effective in your communication skills before worrying about who else is “screwing up.”
jamesb says
I nearly give view, as you and everyone here does….
There are certainly TONS of articles that repeat my views on this….
No matter….
Obama’s win WAS a thunderous HAPPY occasion for a Nation and the World…..
We ALL suffer thru , still in disbelief, at Trump’s win and Presidency….
CG says
No, you are childishly transferring your views onto everyone else and determining what they should think.
As for me, I was certainly on the record, upon the election of Obama, as being proud and celebratory of the historic aspect, and what it represented. That does not change the fact that I believe that Barack Obama, the man, should not have been elected and in my view was one of the worst Presidents in American history.
jamesb says
Bull Shit…
I ALWAYS declare here that others should hold their views….
And I understand that…
CG says
The bottom line is that there plenty of people in America and around the world who felt for legitimate reasons that Obama should not have been elected and there are plenty of people in America and around the world (not me) who are overjoyed that Donald Trump is President.
jamesb says
Around the world ?
Plenty of people?
REALLY????
CG says
Yes, really.
You should read up on the nationalist/populist movements gaining steam in Europe. Trump’s appeal is far from an American only phenomena.
jamesb says
Yea….
I guess Trump HAS brought out the worst in people in other places in copying him and reacting to his actions against their countries and their peoples…..
Good point….
CG says
It’s far less than they are copying him, but more like those movements were in place prior to Trump’s election. We may be following “them.”
Zreebs says
There are only two countries in which a majority of the population would prefer Trump over Obama. But CG is right that there are many people around the world that share the vale’s of Trump besides those two countries.
Zreebs says
I meant to say that those two countries are Russia and Israel
Zreebs says
So what has happened in the past decade that has made much of the world so nationalistic?
CG says
Immigration challenges are a reason why (and this has certainly been seen before throughout American history with each wave of new immigrants) but also concerns about globalization and how that affects the economy. The anxieties in America are the same as in Europe and elsewhere (such as the Phillipines) and vice versa.
jamesb says
I’m gonna differ on Europe and immigration….
Up until the Middle East escalation after 9-11 I could be wrong but immigration was fairly routine….
But when the Bush family entered the Middle East?
They destabilized things in the Middle East and Africa….
Europe received a MASS EXODUS unlike anything we have had going on here historically….
Their response in Europe went to accepting EVERYONE….
But that produced no place to put the people….
So in Europe there are ghetto’s where concentrations of emigre’s reside in cramped quarters….
A lot of those countries have therefore experienced pushbacks….
In some countries WAY before Nationalism was strong…
But they have evolved to a certain extent….
Nationalism was countered by the creation of the EU….
But from my point of view?
The Middle East Wars…Going on since Sept 2001 has been a major part of the collateral damage to American and Europe…
NOTHING happens in a vacuum anymore on this planet…
CG says
So now you have the whole “Bush Family” “destabilizing” multiple countries leading to a sudden immigration explosion.
Talk about derangement.
jamesb says
No….
Check your history CG….
Iraq and Iran had been at a satlmate until the Bush intervention…
A weaked Iraq open the door for Iran….
KNOW YOUR HISTORY
CG says
Iraq and Iran were engaged in a bloody civil war long before any Bush became President.
There have been refugees swarming into countries in Europe seeking protection, better lives, more opportunities, long before and quite besides the point to any U.S. policy.
You just know one setting. Wave pom poms and blame anything possible on any Republican. It doesn’t exactly take an intellectual heavyweight do to that, so it makes sense.
Zreebs says
I don’t think it is helpful for liberals to continue to bring up race as the reasons that people opposed Obama. Yes, there are plenty of people who looked the other way when Trump pined that he wanted immigrants from Norway instead of shithole countries. But many of us liberals looked the other way when Bill Clinton did his misdeeds. We were told that we were less than moral back then when we still supported Clinton – and we didn’t like it and we didn’t think that the criticism was fair.
When I was working out of the Chicago office last month, I couldn’t help but notice how “white” downtown Chicago is. Everyone looked more or less the same. But Chicago is a much more diverse town than most communiities in America. So a lot of middle America might not even really know a black person, Muslim, gay or transgendered person. So a lot of people struggle with the idea that, for example, transgendered people should be able to use the bathroom of their sexual identity. That doesn’t make them bad people. As liberals, we must continue to educate other people about injustices. That is what we believe passionately in, but just because someone else can’t see something that seems obvious to us, that doesn’t mean those people are racist. Just because I am one of the few people on this site who gets upset with Israel killing 52 people and injuring thousands, it doesn’t mean that the rest of you are racist because you are silent. Let’s dial back that term “racist” for more extreme examples. Ironically, it will make our arguments more persuasive.
jamesb says
I like how you suggested that Democrats should NOT speak about race and them you yourself pointed to issue…..
I agree with ya Z that America should NEVER give up DEALING with racism ….
Some of us will want to follow your indirect suggestion…Working quietly in the background in their daily lives…
But as human’s tend to be?
Some WILL work out in the light ….
Yes, THAT will scare some whites…..
But Martin Luther King moved mountains standing up, without violence to NOT let America forget the plight of those whose forefathers where borough here in chains to be sold….
I add that current issues are NOT just about Blacks…
It is about Browns and Yellows and those who are not Christians….

They ran out of time Scott, couldn’t bring up the fact that the Republican President’s staff had essentially celebrated that John McCain was about to die. No one seemed to want to interrupt our Republican President while he was lying.
I am in London and thought I might check out the blogs before we went to bed for the evening, and I noticed that Corey’s obsession with me continues. Nice to be remembered, but I would be interested to see where I ever gleefully anticipated Senator McCain’s impending death. The whataboutism continues when someone feels the need to deflect from a Republican White House filled with substandard staff and mean spirited children.
The fact that no apology has been forthcoming from the White House is so Roy Cohen.
London is full of people here for the wedding this weekend, and the Prime Minister’s question time today was great to watch. We love this place, but Brexit is taking a toll on our friends and relatives financially. Property values are still falling. Lots of people thinking of moving their money to the Continent.
Our fundraiser for Tammy Baldwin was a great success. It took in 50K for a relatively small house party. We had only budgeted for 30K.
The Dems picked up another Assembly seat from the Republicans in PA yesterday and nominated some strong women in four of the State’s Congressional Districts. This could be another year of the woman the way the primaries are going.
We will get back in time for the California primary and I plan to work on election day. Hopefully the jungle primary will give us some strong House candidates in SoCal.

Thanks Zreebs, but we had a very well organized host committee that deserves the credit. It was fun, we missed the event since we were traveling on Sunday, but I did get a thank you call from Senator Baldwin. It was a classy thing for her to do.
Yesterday’s comments by Trump, immigrants are animals, reminded me of Hitler saying Jews are animals back in the 30’s. Disgusting and scary all at the same time.
Once again, Trump’s fellow Republicans have been silent.
Zreebs says
I had not heard about the “animals” comnent. Yes, it is troubling and scary.
I am not a big supporter of immigration because our infrastructure is already at capacity and in my view immigration of unskilled workers tends to lower the wages of the lowest paid workers. Immigration of skilled workers can often be beneficial though.
But here is the main point of this post: Immigrants are usually great people. They are motivated to make their lives better. Statistics show they are LESS likely to commit crimes. Undocumented workers are often people in unfortunate situations and should always be treated with respect.
Mussolini once said (something like) if you pluck feathers from a duck one at a time then no one seems to notice. Trump makes these type of comments so regularly that they barely make the news anymore. Referring to a group of people in desperate situations as animals is outrageous – even though saying these things is increasingly accepted by society. Our country is changing – and it is not for the better.

Oh, the country is straight up Republican?

There are areas in California a lot more “red” than Orange County. They just don’t have any many people.
In any event, Trump lost Orange County by more than twice the margin he lost the popular vote nationally, so it was hardly a pro-Trump area in 2016. From what I can see anecdotally, and what seems to be backed up from that poll result, is that a lot of Republican leaning voters, who never trusted him, and who perhaps did not vote for him against Hillary, basically like what they are seeing now in terms of results.

In 2012, then-Pres. Obama lost Orange County (Calif.) to Mitt Romney 512,440 to 582,332.
Orange County is historically a deeply-Republican county, home to Disneyland and the John Birch Society’s western headquarters in San Marino. Not only did it vote GOP, but within the GOP tended to support the more conservative candidate supported by the California Republican Assembly (predecessor to and model for the liberal volunteer California Democratic Council on the left.) Most of its Republican members of the California Legislature and U.S. Congress were markèdly more conservative (or party-line) than the liberal (and thus electable) Republicans you’d find in the San Francisco Bay Area, such as Congressmen. Paul “Pete” McCloskey and William Maillard.
Orange County’s turn, partly because of demographic changes, towards the Democrats is relatively recent, and apparently not set in granite.

I have been captivated by the pictures coming out of Hawaii. It is pretty incredible, and so I am surprised that the coverage has not been greater. I guess other than the Lelani Estates the damage to personal property has been minor.

Richard Nixon’s renomination and re-election in 1972 were challenged by not just one, but two, Republican members of Congress: Paul “Pete” McCloskey of California from the left, and John Ashbrook of Ohio from the right.
Neither was a serious threat — though of course with the Nixon operation being as paranoid as it was, that didn’t keep from minor sabotaging forays from CREEP (The Committee for the Re-Election of the President).
