Trump’s fellow Republicans are NOT happy with Trump’s trade war……
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on Thursday blasted the Trump administration’s decision to place steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, Canada and Mexico, saying the financial penalties are a “tax hike on Americans.”
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced earlier Thursday that President Trump has decided to slap hefty tariffs on the EU, Mexico and Canada, ending the temporary exemptions for the key trading allies despite their two months of lobbying to avoid the tariffs.
Hatch added that he would urge the administration to reverse its decision but did not specify what steps he would take to try to pressure them to do so.
“In light of the mounting evidence that these tariffs will harm Americans, I will continue to push the administration to change course,” Hatch added.
Republicans, including Hatch, have publicly fretted for months over Trump’s trade policies, including concerns that broad steel and aluminum tariffs would spark retaliation from other countries. Some GOP senators have floated new legislation that would give Congress more oversight of the president’s trade decisions.
Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) separately called the tariff decision “bad news” that would “invite retaliation.”…

And I thought it was Sen. Toomey’s constituents in Western Pennsylvania’s steel districts that these tariffs were intended to help.

That’s true.
You should remember that when others point out that his followers couldn’t care less about the facts.
They believe what he says because they want to believe it and the facts be damned.
And that includes the vast majority of those who call themselves Republican.

Absolutely right Jack.
Which reminds me–Trump and his Republican supporters are crowing over the unemployment rate dropping to an 18 yr low at 3.8%.
But none of them ask now what the REAL unemployment rate is. Remember that when Trump was running for President and unemployment was at 4.5% Donny said it was more like 28,35 or 42%!!
Of course that was bullshit but his supporters and Republican primary voters never challenged him. And now that Trump us in power none will remember that he ever doubted the Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers.
The Republican Party is the nation’s biggest cult right now. Scientology has nothing on the GOP!

A tarriff will clearly have winners and losers. A “winner” on a tax on steel imports is a worker who works at a Domestic steel manufacturer. His job is now a little bit more secure because buying from foreign steel suppliers is now a more expensive option.
Tarriffs can be justified on sound economic grounds in rare circumstances. For example, steel tariffs were once justified on the grounds that we need a reliable domestic steel industry if we ever had to go to war.

Yes Tariff’s DO have winner’s and loser’s…..
IF the industries in the US can handle possible increased product IF companies looking for supplies turn to them….
I do NOT believe that THIS will happen…
Consumers and US manufactures are VERY cost conscience…
I DO believe that certain products could have price increases….
I also believe that some compnaies OUTSIDE the US will turn to other countries for goods and services if this goes on for a extended period….
Some American companies will simply go out of business….
And like Carrier and othe companies?
American multinational companies will continue to explre cheaper labor outside our borders….
The trade war won’t bankrupt America
But I could see a slow down in the economy and problem with Foreign Affairs from our ‘Allies’….
There could also be a political price to pay for Republicans in farm and manufacturing area’s…
It’s a crap shot that Trump is forcing on this country and the world….
And his political party members…
Remember…
Trump lives and operates by the seat of his pants in a Alternate Universe….

Of course a tariff is s tax. Does anyone think it is not?

Pat Toomey (originally from Rhode Island, like Sean Spicer and Michael Flynn), of course, is not only a Senator from Pennsylvania, but a leader if not founder of the Club for Growth.
So, apart from his personal ideological beliefs (probably different from Rick Santorum’s Catholic conservatism), Sen. Toomey has two distinct Republican or pro-Republican views to hear from.
