Ryan’s decision against seeking an 11th term while staying at the House’s helm until year’s end, announced Wednesday, holds the potential to launch a period of personal liberation and professional recalibration.
He will be a lame duck for almost nine months, essentially one-quarter of his speakership, but for him that’s not going to be all that neutering because the window for important GOP policymaking has already closed at least through the election.
But he’ll still be second in the line of presidential succession and the senior Republican in the legislative branch, with the power to summon a national megaphone to amplify whatever truths he might want to speak.
And he will still be a few weeks shy of his 49th birthday when he leaves office, allowing him two full decades at least to make a return to public life. That’s an eternity in the electorate’s collective mind. So if Ryan still sees himself moving to the White House after his three teenage children are adults, there is plenty of time for refashioning how he hopes to be perceived by voters of the late 2020s or the 2030s.
“With his newfound political freedom, I hope the speaker uses his remaining time in Congress to break free from the hard-right factions of his caucus that have kept Congress from getting real things done,” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York said. “If he’s willing to reach across the aisle, he’ll find Democrats willing and eager to work with him.”
Ryan did not say anything at his Wednesday news conference to signal an immediate start to that process…..

Paul Ryan is responsible for adding TRILLIONS to the national debt. It’s hard to understand what a trillion is. Maybe this helps. A million seconds=12 days. A billion seconds=30 years. A trillion seconds = 30,000 years.
Some Republicans want Ryan to leave the Speakership now.
I doubt THAT will happen….

Previous speakers have resigned rather abruptly. Gingrich and Boehner both left Congress immediately. Can’t really remember with Hastert but I think he resigned the Speaker’s chair and then left the House a few months later.
You guys think he’s gonna get kicked out, for real?
I’m not predicting it ,but there’s probably a fifty percent chance that he might step down voluntarily.
Really there’s no reason for him to stay.
He’s not going to be around next year and the present contenders to take his place, McCarthy and Scalise ,might figure they have some votes now who will not be around next year,so they might be privately urging it.
I mean I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen .

Nope, he would be pushing any number of Congressional investigations of her and counting the seats his party was expected to gain in November.

That’s assuming that the House Republican caucus would first choose Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as their Leader and then have enough votes to elect him Speaker of the House of Representatives.
