Yea?
Show us where it says you can do so without going thru firing Ron Rosenstein, which is the agreed path but most….
Turns out Trump doesn’t have anything to back up his statement ?
Sound familiar ?
White House officials are unable to point to any internal assessment to justify their contention that President Donald Trump has the legal authority to fire special counsel Robert S. Mueller III.
Many Republican and Democratic lawmakers are urging Trump to let the former FBI director complete his investigation of Russian election meddling and possible misconduct by the president and his campaign associates. Those pleas intensified last week when the president and his top spokeswoman signaled the White House has concluded he has the authority to do so.
The legal community is split on whether a sitting U.S. president has the legal authority to remove a special counsel.
Some experts say Justice Department rules that govern the appointment, supervision, conduct and termination of special counsels vest firing authorities in the attorney general….

My Name Is Jack says
Discounting Trumps usual hyperbole,he can certainly set in motion Mueller dismissal if he decides to.
jamesb says
The point is how?
He says he can just fire Mueller directly
Most say on thru Rosenstein
If not him then whoever replaces him
And next should be Solicitor General I believe
My Name Is Jack says
That’s the point…
He could make it happen if he decides to go that route.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Remember that Richard Nixon succeeded in having Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox fired by Solicitor Gen. Robert Bork, after the resignations of Atty-Gen. Elliott Richardson and his immediate successor, Deputy Atty-Gen. William Ruckelshaus.
jamesb says
I label this under Trump bull shit DSD…..
If there is ANYTHING he would HAVE to get right ?
It would getting rid of Mueller….
I assume someone would have to speak to the Solicitor General in advance to KNOW that he would do Trump’s bidding….
Even Trump won’t be stupid enough to throw things into constitutional crisis by freelancing a Mueller firing…
It would pile another layer on his problems…
jamesb says
And yes…
Session could be gone in heartbeat….
But something IS there in Sessions favor right now….
Could it be just that Trump can beat on him from time to time?….and he just takes it?
Zreebs says
I think it would be relatively easy for Trump to dump Sessions, and that would set in motion the process to fire Mueller.
And I would not expect that the political party that specializes in voter suppression, budget deficits, gun proliferation and gerrymandering to do anything to stand in the way of Trump. They have no moral backbone whatsoever, and that is why they need to be replaced.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
The base already believes that Robert Mueller (R) is some kind of Democratic saboteur, and that somehow Jeff Sessions, the first Senator to endorse Donald Trump and while in the Senate a very reactionary member, has betrayed the President by recusing himself from stopping the greatest witch-hunt in human history.
I agree that firing the Attorney General, the Deputy A-G and/or the Special Counsel would be a huge mistake for Donald Trump, but it’s quite easy for me to conceive that at some time in the future, if not now, the President will go ahead and do just that.
Zreebs says
I think it is not only conceivable, it is likely.
Keith says
I agree Zreebs, very likely.
He might try the pardon route first (the Scooter thing was a test run), but he will fire Mueller when he has run out of options and distractions. The Cohen thing is too close to the money and his laundry operation.
And, when he does fire those folks at Justice, the Republicans in Congress will do nothing. Oh they will talk, but take no action.
jamesb says
Yea he might DSD….
And it WILL result in a shit storm….
That I would hope would make him get out from underneatrh by quitting…
CG says
I don’t think he is going to be firing Mueller, at least anytime soon. I am sure he is tempted to, but people around him are telling him what a mistake that would be.
If he were to fire Sessions, he’s not going to be able to get a new nominee for Attorney General though the Senate, certainly not without a pledge that Mueller would not be fired or that they would also recuse themselves.
Zreebs says
Does Trump listen to the people around him?
jamesb says
Seldom Z….
Thinks like he ‘s still the NYC Real Estate guy doing deals….
Notice how he doesn’t use staff?
He wants to be a one man show…
Tends to listen a bit more to lawyers..
But not enough to attract good lawyer’s to work for him….
He IS?…His OWN worst enemy…
CG says
He always listens to the last person to tell him something. Then, he changes his mind when a new person tells him something else.
jamesb says
Agreed CG….
He’s having enough of an issue with own party people with Pompeo for Sec of State…
