Lawyers for President Donald Trump are asking a federal judge to order that an arbitrator resolve a dispute with Stormy Daniels, a former adult film actress, over an alleged “hush money” agreement reached weeks before the 2016 presidential election as she shopped a story about an alleged sexual liaison with Trump a decade earlier.
Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, filed suit against Trump in a state court in Los Angeles last month and urged a judge to declare the $130,000 deal null and void because Trump never signed it.
Lawyers for Trump and a company that his personal attorney Michael Cohen set up to facilitate the payment quickly moved the case to federal court.
In a new court filing on Monday afternoon, they asked U.S. District Court Judge James Otero to require Daniels to pursue any disagreements in arbitration, as the agreement provides….
The National Enquirer’s parent company asked a California court on Monday to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the former Playboy model who has alleged an affair with Donald Trump before he became president.
The company, American Media, argued in a motion filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that a deal the publication struck with Karen McDougal to sell her story about the alleged sexual relationship with Trump for $150,000 was protected under the First Amendment.
The move came in direct response to a lawsuit filed by McDougal last month that sought to free her from the agreement, which she claims was used to bury her claims and prevent them from inflicting damage on Trump’s 2016 candidacy.
McDougal alleges that the effort was part of a coordinated campaign by the publisher and Trump’s campaign team to keep her silent about the allegations.
Attorneys for American Media pushed back against McDougal’s claims in the motion filed on Monday, arguing that the National Enquirer and other outlets “have a First Amendment right not to publish and cannot be punished for exercising that right.”…
