My point was that singling out Amazon, as Trump apparently wants to do ,is “messing with free enterprise.”
The market would say that if Amazon can deliver a product cheaper and more efficiently then the ancillary things that may result (closing of malls, etc.) are irrelevant.

Amazon is paying OTHER countries taxes while WE the American taxpayer get ZIP in federal taxes from them….
CG says
Federal was included too. You just left that out. They pay plenty of state and local taxes, as well. There is absolutely no reason to believe they have done anything remotely illegal or not by the rules.
jamesb says
CG YOU ARR kidding me right?
They did $177 BILLION
They paid $400 Million
In taxes to state and local government of $412M that amounted to around 98%
Of the total?
You are defending THAT????
CG says
They are playing by the rules. They certainly shouldn’t be singled out because a guy with dictator-envy wants to go after their boss (for other reasons) or because he is jealous that he is a lot richer than him.
They paid a lot of federal taxes in recent years and apparently stand to benefit greatly from the tax bill that Trump signed. That is what they should do, especially as it benefits their stockholders and very large employee workforce.
They are actively looking for a city to build a 2nd HQ and they are going to get a lot more in the way of local and/or state tax benefits in order to locate there, considering all the jobs they will produce and revenue for the economy.
CG says
The only (illogical) reason that Trump cares about this is because Bezos also owns the Washington Post, and the Washington Post writes mean stories about him.
jamesb says
That also CG….
CG says
because of Trump’s obsession with Bezos and his coverage in the Washington Post, Amazon, a completely unrelated company, lost $50 billion in shareholder value today in the stock market.
This is hardly something to encourage Trump on.
jamesb says
I do NOT give a shit CG
The company should be paying BILLIONS in federal taxes to the country they call home….
Obviously i’m Not alone with recognizing the issue on this…..
CG says
The states and localities they pay taxes are actually in the country “they call home.”
It’s ridiculous to single them out when they are playing by the same rules as any other large corporation. The reason why Trump is going after them on Twitter is plain as day.

In a colum today,National Review editor Rich Lowery essentially dismisses the “NeverTrumpers” Republicans.
Agreeing that Trump is a boor of sorts,Lowery, nevertheless, concludes that Trump is far more representative of the vast majority of Republicans today than the NeverTrumpers.Further ,he concludes that Trumps nationalistic pronouncement on trade and immigration are much more aligned with Republican thought today than the NeverTrumpers.
Many of us here have emphasized these points, while a few here seem to believe that if Trump would just go away the GOP will happily revert to the sort of establishment conservatism represented by George W Bush.
Lowery doesn’t see this happening.
Neither do I.
jamesb says
Trumpism becoming the party with no Trump?
REALY?
My Name Is jack says
Indeed, I would note that the runner up to Trump for the nomination,Ted Cruz, would have represented a significant departure from the Bush/Romney establishment conservatism.
That view was represented by John Kasich who came in a distant third and won only one primary in his home state.
jamesb says
Ted Cruz , as fucked up as he is ?….Is a politican…..
Trump is just a third rate real estate guy for Queens who got a start with daddies money….
My Name Is jack says
That’s irrelevant to my point.
The point is that Republican voters overwhelmingly favored two candidates whose campaigns were essentially repudiations of the Republican political establishment.
The establishment Republicans detested Cruz only slightly less than Trump.
Your “explanation,” if one can call it that, as how Trumpism (which as Keith notes has basically become synonymous with Republicanism) won’t outlast Trump was nothing more than a personal blast at Trump himself conveniently ignoring the hot button issues that he has espoused .
Your argument that Trump hasn’t been successful in enacting much of his agenda is the biggest irrelevancy of all.You believe the people who supported him because they believe all his tripe are simply going to fold up their tent and go home or put a call in to Jeb Bush to become their candidate?Thats naive in the extreme.
Indeed, the fact that Trump hasn’t been able to do what he said will likely increase their anger at the establishment whom they will blame for his failure.
jamesb says
Yo Fella’s?
I was given a question…

I DID say he’s tried to get his way , like Obama, thru his cabinet actions…
My Name Is jack says

Once again that silly diversion.

Scott P says
Yeah I tend to agree. The Republican Party flirted with Trump-esque candidates like Pat Buchanan and Newt Gingrich in previous primaries before going with more mainstream nominees. If anything these sorts of candidates will be more emboldened rather than less in future elections.
As Keith and Jack have noted in other comments today the GOP created Trump. They aren’t going to throw out the recipe now.
jamesb says
Scott?…..
If and when the midterms are over?
The GOPer’s are gonna be pointing fingers at each other and CERTAINLY Trump…
They have already been dissing Gingrich
My Name Is jack says
“If and when the midterms are over…”
Do you understand how nonsensical that sentence is?
What do you mean”if?”
Are you suggesting the possibility the midterms will never be over?
“When” will they be over? The day of the elections of course.
Are you now declaring a certain Democratic victory?Otherwise ,why would Trump and the Republicans be pointing fingers at each other?
So many questions so few answers….
jamesb says
He, he, he…..
Jack?
Do I believe the midterms will never be over?
This a joke , right?
Zreebs says
Jack, I did not know you read National Review. I haven’t read a copy in years. But then, i haven’t even seen a copy in years!
I think Trump’s position on immigration was and is very mainstream Republican. Republican politicians supported immigration because their big business donors wanted cheap labor. But the Republican voters have always opposed immigration.
There have also been a large contingents of pro tariff Republican voters, but they were not a majority until Trump was elected. Some of those people who now support Trump were former Democrats.
Pat Buchanan was someone who attracted the same Trump coalition many years earlier. But his last name was too long for Republican voters. If it was Bush, I think he would have won the nomination.
My Name Is jack says
I don’t Zreebs(although I ocassionally did years ago).
Lowery also publishes a weekly column in the local paper.Thats where I read the article.
Lowery often has some good insights on internal Republican politics.
My Name Is jack says
Do I believe that Trumps nationalistic policies will outlive him as major factors in the Republican Party and its future selection of presidential candidates?
Yes ,I do.
In other words,I think future Republican presidential candidates will likely be closer to Trump ,maybe without the erratic ,boorish behavior ,than George W Bush or Mitt Romney.
jamesb says
Me?
I don’t….
Based on the fact that MOST Republican lawmakers in fact think or Trump in the same way 60% of the American population does…..
We and the media have pointed out that GOPer’s are acting like they will go along with Trump because Trump’s base seems to be well established in the polling….
I have REAPEATILY pointed to the FACT that Republicans lawmakers have gone their OWN way mostly, except for the tax cut last year….
Now their own way IS mostly the Republican way….BUT?
The just passed spending bill was almost a clean break from the Trump bull shit….
His people made the deal…
And even THEY made deals that where counter to the their bosses bull shit….
So in the end Jack?
I do NOT buy in that Trumpism will survive…
As a matter of fact I don’t think it’s even in effect that much now….
All I see is again?
A inept, arrogant, mis informed NYC real estate guy floundering around in a job he never should have gotten….
I see a country watching a this spectacle, afraid of removing the guy, for fear that the office of the Presidency might be damaged…
THAT is sad….
But as long as the media keeps the sunlight on him?
He won’t be able to sneakily make things go his way….
Amen…
Zreebs says
I largely agree with Jack, but that will especially be true if Trump wins re-election. If Trump loses in a landslide, then it is much less certain. Likewise, if Trump is able to implement tariffs without a trade war, then the next GOP candidate will also support tariffs. The next Republican Nominee will oppose immigration – period.
jamesb says
The trade war has already begun with China
Trump backed down against the EU, Canada and Mexico
China does not look like it’s gonna capitulate to Trump’s threats
Today’s market drop is mostly reaction to China
My Name Is jack says
If you will notice James’s reply to my post, you will see that he doesn’t deal with the subject at all.
Contenting himself with a personal attack on Trump(that I imagine all here agree with ,but is totally irrelevant to the subject at hand) and an alleged lack of support among Republican legislators for much of Trumps program(once again irrelevant to the discussion.)
The discussion was whether Trumpism,ie,the issues which animate his followers survive him,not his personal characteristics nor what Republican politicos think.Indeed Trumpism is actually a reaction against those type people which,of course, renders James’s view about what Republican politicos think just the opposite of what he is saying.
James’s view in some way mirrors CGs.Both view Trump as an aberration ,though CG readily recognizes the issues that gave rise to Trump as continuing to exist and, despite his personal hopes that Trumpism simply recedes when Trump leaves the stage, concedes the such is not certain.
Zreebs point is well taken.A landslide Trump defeat in 2020 May so deflate Trump supporters that they will drift away or move onto less contentious candidates.
jamesb says
So in a way you have made my point of view fit Z’s comment?
No problem..
I thank you for another way we get the same place…
I believe that Trump will NOT Be the American President by one of several
Means on Jan 21st, 2021
CG says
I think much of Trumpism is based on Trump himself and the specific appeal he has to many, that is unlikely to be duplicated by anyone else, including his appeal to the non-typical Republican voter (i.e. the Roseanne Barr and Roseanne Connors of the world).
As long as the media and the liberals are opposed to whomever is their main opposition, be it a Kasich type or whomever, there will be a rallying around them effect on the right.
CG says
What is not being discussed here is the direction the Democrats appear headed in and the ways in which that manifest itself in the years ahead. Obviously, that will have much to do both with how Republicans are viewed as the counter to them and the possibility for any third party movement.
As I have said before, there are forces and arguments going on among Democrats now that sound very much like where Republicans were in 2010, with the rise of the Tea Party.
Considering the more traditional history of somewhat quick changes with the Democrats, it is even less likely that they will nominate their version of a Mitt Romney in 2020 though, but instead will want to counter Trump by picking someone much less “establishment.”
For all these reasons, I think the appeal of a ” sensible centrist” third party movement will have more appeal than ever in 2020.
My Name Is jack says
A successful third party is the great “dream” of American politics;however except arguably the Populists ,they have usually been built around a man or a specific issue.
Who is the candidate?
I don’t see a party being created and then a contest for its nomination.
Instead , it would have to be a candidate with the party then being created around him in my view.
jamesb says
American President’s do NOT come from 3rf parties
CG says
Third parties have entered the ranks of the “2” major parties in past American history, but if there is one thing that 2016 should have taught you , it is not to be hung up on the impossible having no chance of occurring.
My Name Is jack says
No one said it’s impossible but anyone would have to say it is highly unlikely.
Indeed, if you and James are right, the Republican Party will return to being a Bush/Romney type party.so what would even be the rationale for such a “ centrist” party?
The whole problem with your idea is that there exists no consensus as to what “ centrist” even means.
jamesb says
They voted WITH Democrats to get a spending bill Jack
Against the conservatives
That was pretty centrist to me,…
My Name Is jack says
So you believe there is room for a”centrist” party although you don’t believe a Third party can elect a President(see your post@5:23).
That makes sense alright.
A single vote ,done as much to keep the government running as anything , is no basis for declaring someone a”centrist.”
Indeed, many of the Republicans who voted for the spending bill specifically cited their great displeasure with it.
Of course, as you say,
You know your stuff!
jamesb says

jamesb says
Just pointed out the cabinet members ain’t lawmakers
Different story…
My NamecIs jack says
Who knew that Ted Cruz was really a “centrist?”
My Name Is jack says
And ,as usual ,your remark had nothing to do with my post which was concerning the establishment of a “ centrist” party.
Casting a vote on a continuing resolution in order to keep the government running is no basis to call someone a “centrist.”
Using that logic, the very conservative Ted Cruz is a “centrist” as I sarcastically noted.
But , hey,you majored in Political Science and “ know your stuff.”
I went to law school.Im another Clarence Darrow!
Wheeeeee!,,,
jamesb says
Ok
Then I answered u before
Running President in a centrist party is a waste of time and energy
There are many third parties out there
jamesb says
…..Villanova beats Michigan 79-62 to win its second NCAA men’s basketball title in three years….
jamesb says
I know some people ain’t happy with the choices from the two parties
But THAT’s the way it is….
CG says
Or enough people just find the major party choices unacceptable enough to rebel.
Remember, somebody does not have to get a majority, or a high plurality, of the popular vote to be elected President nor do they need to receive a majority of the Electoral College to be elected President.
Keith says
Centrist? There are so few centrists left in the Republican Party that they could all fit into a phone booth (if there are any phone booths left that is). And one of them looks to be going down in New York as I type this.
These conversations certainly go in circles, and are motivated, in part, by an obsessive need to somehow deny that Donald Trump is not only the leader of the Republican Party, but he is, in every sense of the world a modern Republican. A racist populist who appeals to the worst instincts of older white Americans fearful of their future. That’s how he got elected, with a lot of help from Putin of course.
When has the Republican majority in Congress opposed, in any significant numbers, anything Trump has proposed? More importantly, they are his greatest protectors of his criminal activities. They have gone to great lengths to derail the Mueller investigation (something that goes unmentioned here for the most part) and there is no certainty that they would object if Trump actually fired Mueller (something that I believe he is moving to do). Also, unmentioned here, is how Republican primary candidates are fighting over who loves the “Great Leader” best — the Indiana GOP Senate campaign has broken down into a Trump fluffer contest. I am sure that Joe Donnelly appreciates that irony in all this.
So today the conversation turned to a third party, a centrist party, that will take on both Trump and the Democrats. A Party that will save America. Well, I would suggest that the Country certainly does need to be saved from Trump and the complicit Republican Party (the damage they are doing to our environment, human rights, and eventually the economy will take years to repair). But, of course, as a Democrat, I believe the Democrats are more than capable of taking care of that task. They certainly did when they saved us from two Bush recessions. But, of course, this time it will be worse.
We have a sociopath in the White House and his family is a crime organization — and they are supported by spineless Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. Two men who simply stare at their shoes when the Great Leader goes off his latest racist rant. He couldn’t even let Easter go by without spreading false rumors about a “Brown Invasion from Mexico”. But, hey, let’s waste just a little more time trying to prove that Trump is a secret Democrat that will revert to his liberal ways at any moment. The man still believes those black boys in Central Park are guilty of rape and attempted murder 20 years after they were proven, by science, to be innocent. He is, and always was, a virulent racist, one who speaks to the majority of the Republican Party.
Every action Trump’s Administration takes, the ones you don’t notice during the daily tweet storms, is straight from the Republican Party Platform. He has moved to not only undo all of Obama’s efforts on the environment and social justice, but he has moved to reward major Republican contributors with gas and oil leases on public lands. His recent move on rolling back fuel efficiency standards is a prime example of just how Republican Trump really is — those big old white boys need their gas guzzling cars with the big engines and their vanity plates. They would never drive a fuel efficient car, someone might think that they’re sissies or something.
So, the Republicans joined with Democrats to pass a budget that will keep the government open until September 30th. And, the Great Leader signed the bill. So? Does that make them all centrists? Of course, like all budgets, the Trump Administration isn’t obligated to spend the money that has been allocated. And, it is a prime responsibility of the Congress to present the President with a budget (not that they were too anxious to do so when Obama was President).
So the next time we decide that a new Party is needed here, I suggest the Republicans on this board volunteer to fix their party. You know, step out from behind their work computers and fight to save it from the Great White Hope currently residing and playing gold, lots of golf, at Mar-a-Lago.
Finally, the last special Congressional election was won by a centrist Democrat from Pennsylvania. I suspect he will be joined by at least four new centrist Democrats from Pennsylvania this November. So while the GOP moves farther to the right, the Democrats have chosen to tack, where needed, to the center. Simply look at the Conor Lamb clones they are running in November. Time will tell if this is a successful strategy. But, if you really want to oppose Trump, then vote Democratic.
jamesb says
Yes Keith!
jamesb says
New thread is here….
Keith says
Yes what James? I directly contradicted your “theory” that somehow our Republican President is a secret Democrat. Besides the fact that “third party votes” are throw away votes. If someone was truly anti-Trump they need to vote for the candidate with the only chance of beating Trump. Otherwise it is simply a moral talking point for blog consumption.
jamesb says
But you supported the ‘centrist’ doctrine, eh?
and the thrid party votes also…
2 out of three ain’t bad…
My Name Is jack says
Political Wire is reporting that Trump and Congressional Republicans are plotting to rescind much of the spending in the Omnibus bill that was used to get Democratic votes.
So much for “centrism.”
jamesb says
I would assume this is just to keep Trump happy…
Midterms are 7 months away and the Senate is 51/49 GOP….
…from the Roll Call piece…’
….’The maneuver may succeed in the House but would be a tough lift in the Senate, where Republicans hold a slim 50-49 majority (soon to be 51-49 after Cindy Hyde-Smith is sworn in to fill the Mississippi Senate seat vacated by Thad Cochran).
Getting 50 Republican votes to roll back spending the Congress just approved might be a long shot given the delicate nature of crafting the omnibus itself.’…
Source….
My Name Is jack says
So?
It’s the simple fact that they are trying to do it that matters.
It plainly shows that their “centrism” as you have inaccurately tried to portray it was nothing but a ruse to get Democratic votes.
Obvious to those who saw what was happening ,while you inaccurately ,as usual ,were trying to portray that vote as some type of rejection of Trump.
It was nothing more than a political ploy so that Republicans wouldn’t be blamed for a government shutdown .
jamesb says
I just posted a piece on this
Summary?
Democrats will in the end run on what THEY think works for them in their district or state
They will not ahere to the national party or media narrative on what to do
In red and purple states that could be support of the second amend or even abortion
In blue states that could be Sanders or Waten support
The OBJECT IS TO WIN!
CG says
The early evidence is that there is a push for ideological liberal purity in primary results even in the “red” areas. Thus, Democrats run the risk of losing winnable races in 2018, but we will really see the direction the party demands in the 2020 Presidential contest.
I note from reading Hillary’s book “What Happened” (wow can she whine and point fingers like the best of them), she says that any Democrat who might possibly ever vote or advocate publicly in a way against legalized abortion on demand should not be welcomed in the party. She says there should be room for people who are “personally Pro-Life”, but that somehow demands they march in lockstep publicly with the pro-choice position.

Where is there a push has been successful CG?
Lipinski won
The loser is still crying
It doesn’t work that way
Democrats are smarter that trying do what u say they should
One size does MOT fit all election races
CG says
Lipinskii nearly lost, which speaks loudly enough, it took right-wing conservative votes to save him in an open primary, and in Texas and Illinois, several of the DCCC backed candidates, who were considered the most “centrist” or “electable” lost and there was a big push back from the Bernie Sanders affiliated groups against the DCCC and the “establishment” in those races, and a lot of fights are still ongoing in Texas in the runoff campaigns.

But he didn’t….
The new US Senator from
Alabama , a Democrat , Support’s the 2nd amendment….
jamesb says
Yes CG….
My thoughts also….
Jack forwarded the thought the Trump will change the party I believe
I do not agree
I have spend time here, including yesterday with Keith pointing out how GOP lawmakers and Trump’s OWN STAFF continue to try and continue rhe GOP brand…..
There has been ample proof of our view
Including the fact that Trump has been sequentially during those who work for him and do NOT subscribe to the world the way he does…..
Most after getting the boot shake off the brain washing and remain a GOPer
But move back the main GOP ideology
Note….
There IS a difference between Trump SUPPORTERS
AND REUNLCAN LAWMAKERS
One is about ideology
The other is about emotion
Keith says
Trumpism is Republicanism. You cannot divorce the two because one created the other.
What Republican law makers have disagreed with their President with a vote in the House or Senate?
Name two James?

In his first White House budget, Trump proposed cutting the NIH’s roughly $30 billion budget by $6 billion.
Instead, the NIH’s budget has grown to $37 billion under Trump, a historic high after years of neglect.
Keith says
What Republicans have voted against him on any issue of core Republicanism James? Which ones have publicly opposed him? How did they oppose him on NATO? What have they done that is directly contrary to what the Trump White House is doing?
These examples are so ridiculous they aren’t really worth addressing. Sort of like saying Speaker Bohnert worked with Obama because they passed a CR to keep the government open. Or your insistence that Bernie Sanders made Clinton a better candidate. All statements that, for whatever reason, you couldn’t give up on even though you were embarrassingly wrong.
The NIH got increased because the Speaker needed Democrats to pass anything. So how is that an example of Republicans opposing Trump?
You really should have taken that class because you don’t understand o
jamesb says
I see you added the word ‘core’….
Keith says
Well what of it? Core, meaning the vital issues fot Republicans, protecting tax cuts for the rich and white America.
What you and others here refuse to acknowledge is that Trump is their Great White Hope, and they will never abandon him.
His Easter message on DACA said it all, “they are coming to get you and I will protect white America.”
jamesb says
I answered your question….
You are changing it with one word….
He, he, he……
Jack just doesn’t accept answers sometimes….
He just wiggles around…
My Name Is jack says
Says the Wiggler in Chief.
It’s hilarious how you vainly attempt to attach to other posters that which actually applies to yourself.
Keith just nailed you wiggler.
Your so called “answer” was nothing at all and your inability to understand the Continuing Resolution issue is actually mind boggling for someone who “claims” to understand politics.
Your labeling me as a “wiggler” is not generally shared here by the other posters and arises,I suggest, due to your well known inability to even understand what myself ,as well as others here ,are even talking about.
jamesb says
He, he, he….
You are who U are Jack….
No problem…
Yea, we all do…
But I stand by my answers , and view of Trump and GOP lawmakers….
They ARE REAL and FACT…
And I took the poly sci courses in college….
And anybody here for a few years…ANYBODY ARE qualified for a graduate degree in poly sci…
Check that…
You guys wouldn’t sign off on SE, eh?
Keith says
Taking a class and comprehension are two different things!
jamesb says
He, he, he…..
I can’t make ya happy on this Keith???
He, he….
I DO know my stuff!….

Self proclaimed.
Bluntly speaking James?
I don’t think any other regular poster (except possibly for DSD who is too nice a guy to say so) here shares that view.
jamesb says
He, he, he
Bluntly speaking Jack?
Thanks for the attention Jack
Makes me feel wanted😉😃
Thanks for the Love….
Zreebs says
James, you were a political science major? Just curious, but what did you want to do with your degree from Adelphi?
jamesb says
Just get the degree….
I was always interested in politics living thru the turbulent late 1960”s…..
We back to graduate school for public admin and Human Resources ….

Bill Kristol – who is typically wrong on everything – said something that I thought was rather interesting. He essentially asked Why is is it that Trump has gone after Amazon, but not Facebook – when Facebook’s allowed fake news from Russia and gave personal information of its users for nefarious purposes.

My work responsibilities are increasing so I will have to see how much time I have to waste moving forward,
jamesb says
Ok CG….
Glad you are gainfully employed and making money…..
Keith says
Did they bust you again?
But comments on this blog are hardly a waste of time, I think an apology is in order.
CG says
Nope Keith. No “bust” or indictment or special prosecutor or any of those things!
Keith says
Happy to know that you will actually doing some work for a change, and I am sure your employer is too.
Zreebs says
CG, Congratulations on your increased responsibilities
Democratic Socialist Dave says
With his weird wriggling out of DACA, Trump has now shown me how his fabled deal-making prowess must have operated in real estate — seem to offer a deal, but always find some pretext not to carry through.
No wonder that not only his former contractors but the domestic, non-Russian, banks have stopped dealing with him.
jamesb says
True THAT DSD…..
Failure’s in the airline, college, food businesses….In addition, before he got his new job?….He was forced to go to the Russians for money, the banks and others wouldn’t lend him money with his Casino failures…In fact he’s currently having problems with hotel’s and gulf course’s…
He likes spending other people’s money and NOT paying back a dollar on a dollar….
It’s so bad actually?
That he’s got the government/us tax payers helping him make money these days….
Donald Trump the debt ‘King’….
